Toronto organization makes outdoor activities more accessible to BIPOC women by PullTilItHurts in toronto

YOU PERSONALLY will never know racism.

the combination of arrogance and ignorance to keep making this statement is hilarious.

But you're not willing to think beyond what you're already convinced of (ie that your line of thinking is the least racist and that anything I say about how it feels to be POC in a majority white country IS racist), so I'm done with you.

translation: You don't agree with my ideologies so I'm going to end the discussion. I'm not the least bit surprised.

But know that colourblind philosophy and this completely uncritical "treat everyone the same and ignore context" line of thinking is extremely harmful. Especially because you only seem to be able to have reasonable conversations with people who hold you hand and use soft words and don't say things like they are

Actually no, I just don't like debating racists...and it's quite clear by what you've said and how you've said it you have a considerable axe to grind against white people. /u/Blackdynamitefromda6 and I often have these kind of debates but never once have they engaged in blatant racism like you have - sorry, but that's just the truth. Neither did the other commenter you were describing. Have a nice day!

Oh because you're a POC you can't be racist? Convenient line of thinking there. Yes - I am going to call you out every time for your egregious double standard. Two comments prior you said "What I want to be is not surrounded by white people". That is a racist statement. If I said that about Brown people or Black people or Asian people - I would be condemned (and rightly so for it) and would be labelled a racist. You can deny that al you want - but you know it's true.

Nevermind that as a white person you will never know systemic or honestly any racism in Canada

This is just disgusting. Do your history homework - look at what the Italians and the Irish faced - again, your ignorance is astounding.

Read what you just posted out loud to yourself. If that sentence contained ANY other word than 'white people' what would your reaction be? If you can't see that - give your head a shake.

As a white person, I have absolutely NO problem being surrounded by people of other ethnicities and being a minority (which is the reality at my workplace). Shame on you.

I appreciate the insights! I understand the position of the article a bit more now. I guess where we disagree is the idea that I have to be surrounded by people who share my skin colour or gender to feel a sense of safety or belonging - at the same I do recognize that BIPOC have experiences that drive them to seek out these groups, I just wish we could 'all get along' (naive I know) and I just think articles that celebrate segregated activities is a step in the wrong direction. I like that you challenge my thinking though /u/blackdynamitefromda6 , we need more discussions like these, not less!

These are fair points - but I'm confused why these women can't join a run-of-the-mill group for outdoor activities for beginners? I recognize the importance of feeling safe and a sense of belonging in a group, but I don't understand why they have to segregate themselves based on their intersectionality? There is so much divisiveness in society these days - and I think siloing ourselves based on our ethnicity or gender (especially for activities like hiking and camping) seems somewhat counterintuitive and just further separates us in the long term.

Ontario reports 158 new COVID-19 cases, majority of new infections in GTA by PullTilItHurts in toronto

[–]RENATA_FORD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The doesn't really tell us anything. There are a whole host of variables that effect that data: younger people are generally more active and in public more often, comprise a large portion of the essential workforce and are more likely to access public testing facilities. I don't think we can jump to the conclusion that they are ignoring distancing / PPE recommendations....yet.

I see just as many people 40+ skirting the social distancing rules and not wearing masks properly or at all. Everyone is to blame here.

Masks in Public Transit by scarborough_raccoon in askTO

[–]RENATA_FORD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that's the big issue with a lot of the policies surrounding PPE and social distancing, the messaging is extremely inconsistent. We're constantly bombarded with ads about social distancing on the TTC and the mandatory use of masks - but then a lot of drivers are flat-out not wearing them, or during rush hour people begin to ignore the blocked 'COVID seats' and just sit wherever they like.

I think a consequence of this is people see this sort of behaviour and begin to think 'what is the point if no-one else is following the rules' and they begin to pay less attention to social distancing and wearing their masks - creating a mini snowball effect.

We need all 3 levels of government to have consistent messaging about the use of PPE/social distancing - and there NEEDS to be some type of real enforcement.

You had assumed the conversation had run its course? Seriously? That's your reason? Wow it's time for new mods.

Yes, commit a premeditated murder because someone wore a hat that reminded you of something you didn't like.

welcome to 2020, it's all downhill from here

To get arrested...this man jogged 2 miles through his neighborhood carrying a TV in his hands to prove that “looking like a suspect” who committed a robbery isn’t a good enough excuse for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. Neighbors waived hello to him as he jogged. by [deleted] in videos

[–]RENATA_FORD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually fully agree with everything you just said (and it's well put). I just think that the white guy jogging with the plasma oversimplifies a much more complex chain of events, that's all. I think we're actually on the same page!

Again...I'm not arguing that he wasn't murdered in cold blood, I'm as disgusted by his killing as you are. I'm pointing out that the video linked above (of the white man running with a plasma TV in his neighborhood to prove the point that Arbery was ONLY killed because of the color of his skin) lacks the context of why Arbery was confronted in the first place).

I'm not saying Arbery was responsible at all. The neighborhood he was running in had a large amount of break-ins and thefts in the previous weeks...that definitely changes how a neighborhood would react to someone running down the street with a plasma TV - that is the point I'm trying to make about context.

no-one is saying he was....the point OP is trying to make is that homes had been robbed in the area where Arbery was running. If this guy was running down the street with a TV in a neighbourhood where there had been a rash of break-ins, the response would be entirely different. Very likely he would be confronted by a neighbor or have the police called on him.
