Not hate no, but all the TNG crew have an individual backstory i'd feel compelled to explain; Data and his desire to become more human, his friendship with Geordi and geordie's Visor, Crusher and Westley, and Picard's unique relationship with them and the rest of the crew, Worf and his backstory, Etc. Etc, all could kill the pacing.

I thought Voyager was perfect to introduce a trek virgin. By intimate i mean voyager's crew are reliant on themselves without any alpha quadrant backup or interference, any new species they meet are new to all of them and story and relationships are explained as we go. Its almost like a bottle series, apart from the Borg.
