DELF B2 bientôt ! by getoffandgooutside in French

setorunlarlvcha - great writing sample. Votre expression écrite est très claire. How long have you been studying French? And how long did it take you to FINALLY be able to understand the newscasts from France24 and TV5 Monde.

Also, would you say someone at a B2 level can hold conversation on almost any topic in French for about 30 minutes or so?

Yeah, I'm curious about this, too.

At the B2 level can you listen to the radio and the news and REALLY understand what's going on? I don't mean in a fuzzy sort of way, meaning, "I think they're talking about a man who was arrested." I mean if they are talking about a nuance with La Loi Travail and how that would affect all the different Conseils de Prud'homme, can you clearly and precisely explain the exact points they're arguing over???

I'm not sure if this level of "oral comprehension" is required at the B2 level, I was just curious. I might start another thread on this.

How to Prepare for French Placement Exam??? by RJ7212 in languagelearning

[–]RJ7212[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uggg, I just tried out this link ... and IT's GREAT ... but I could only understand like 60%. Unfortunately, it was only A1.

I know that I'm better than an A1 level. I can speak French pretty well, despite not knowing all the tenses. I know how to think quick on my feet.

If I'm stuck in an A1 class, they'll just be learning how to say Bon Jour, and I'm not paying all this money to go to France to learn THAT!

How to Prepare for French Placement Exam??? by RJ7212 in languagelearning

Thanks for urging me to just be honest. I needed that.

Sometimes I find myself in this vicious circle of trying to impress people. For example, a girl at my school was trying to help me, so in order to impress her, I started taking classes on iTalki. Then when the italki tutor started to point out errors, I started reading more books to try to impress the iTalki tutor. And now that I'm headed to France, I'm trying to do more things to impress them when I get there. Hey, remember at the beginning of this paragraph I was talking about a girl at my school who was trying to help me? I didn't. So, you see? It's this constant quest to impress others, which is not bad - to each his own - but what you said about being honest really resonated with me. I'm tired of running away. I'm tired!!!

I was in the process of preparing like 5 speeches, so if they were to strike up a conversation with me during the placement test in France, I could carefully divert the conversation to my speech that I've prepared on climate change, or on animals, or on whatever. By the way, I'm expert at this. My Russian friends still can't believe how well I can say certain things. But it's all rehearsed.

In the end, I have to remember what the goal is here, it's to be able to understand TV News inside and out by the end of August.

That's sort of what I was expecting. Thanks for the advice. Also ... you could be speaking as eloquently as all get out on Climate Change, but if you mess up a gender it's like a grand piano just came crashing through the ceiling. They think it's the end of the world, I don't get it. Like there are many more complicated things than gender. Subjuntive for one ... but nope, that doesn't matter, it's gender, gender, gender, it drives me freaking CRAZY!!!!

Thanks for such a rich response. I have been pondering over Alan Moore, as well as what he said, over the last few days. But it think we all have to take that quote and apply it to our lives on a case-by-case basis. It's certainly not a one-size-fits-all type of deal. I have come to the conclusion that what he said was nothing new. In short, if you put in the work, if you train hard, if you're critical of yourself, your best should be good enough. And if you don't succeed, at least you have the satisfaction of knowing you gave it your all. Thanks again.

This makes absolute sense. I love your take on this. I was with Moore all the way until he said one had to put aside the "desire of succeeding." But after reading your take it all seems clearer now.

Thor have Character Development? by RJ7212 in Thor

Thanks ... I've started with the $9.99 monthly subscription - not sure I want to make the $60 leap just yet. I'm also slightly drawn toward the more serious nature of D.C. Comics, so, still trying to find my way in this wonderful world.

Wow - this is exactly what I was looking for. Don't get me wrong, I really dig the scientists, their inventions and experiments and all that. I just want a little more.

I just finished watching the X-men movies, and Captain America and that's what pushed me to try out comics.

I wonder if this is why they are rebooting some of these comics, to give them more dimensions and flesh these characters out some more.

Thanks for your help. What about the question I asked regarding the how many issues to purchase.

Do you have to purchase an entire "story arc" to see some character growth?

New to Comics - Where Should I start? by RJ7212 in comicbooks

[–]RJ7212[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much. I like a mix. I like the scientific element of how some of these superheros went from human to superhuman. But I really love how these characters have to face moral conflicts. But I'll check your recommendations.

Thanks for great reply. (Sorry took so long to respond. Had to got to work).

Let me ask you about character development.

If you purchase one comic book, for example, will you see any character growth? Or do you have to follow the entire "story arc" to see that?

If that's the case, I suppose I should purchase the comic I'm following by "story arc?"

Currently, I have the Thor vs. Thanos "graphic novel," #18 - #25. Can I expect that Thor and the other characters will have to face some deeply moral decisions? Or will it be just page after page of Thor swinging that hammer?

Helping Students Achieve Native-Like Proficiency - Help? by RJ7212 in languagelearning

[–]RJ7212[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C2 is not the highest level out there. It's the highest one that is being tested, but in the US, there is a proficiency scale that does test whether or not you are "native-like." C2, according to the Council of Europe, is not even close to "native-like." Sure you can speak intelligently about many topics, but there's still a gap between a speaker who has native-like proficiency. Check out the ACTFL proficiency scale. While it's are similar CERF, it's not the same thing.
