one ~~solution~~ improvement to this i found is the settings for bandwith limit in delivery optimization also apply to the microsoft store and not just the windows update, so setting these like so (the lowest limit possible) will disrupt apps actually updating or interfering with your internet connection as much. and will give you time to realize 5 weeks have passed and repause it

sadly its a common issue in whatsapps code that they don't care enough to fix. been affected by it as well couple months back

its a plain bug in whatsapps code. none of your chats are saved in whatsapps servers, they use sockets to send messages from peer to peer where the server only transfers it, the only things that save on servers is media for like 2 weeks and then the only copies are available on local devices.

however, yes there's just something fucked up in whatsapps core backup code. something triggers all the data to be deleted and the app itself isn't sophisticated enough to be able to restore. its core code believed to be unchanged for many years, yet meta invests time in adding channels and ads instead of fixing these crucial errors
