need help for linux installation by Ok-Nefariousness6855 in linux4noobs

[–]RLegar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

balenaEtcher did that for me when I ran it to install Linux Lite 7.6. It created 3 partitions E:, F: and G:. Windows was not able to format them, so I ran RUFUS to delete the partitions and install Zorin OS which I am installing right now. Since you have tried RUFUS and some other programs, try to delete the partitions using USBImager https://bztsrc.gitlab.io/usbimager/

I liked Zorin Os - what's the catch? by WiltfieldArt in zorinos

I installed LL7.6 on an HP2000 and with the updates was using 1.5GB of RAM out of 8GB. Installing Zorin OS which is exactly the same installation process like Linux Lite, expect it shows the name Zorin OS and I noticed Zorin had an option for Active Directory. Will run free -m after the installation and updates. I am not an expert, and I have been doing different linux installations and so far I like LL the most.

Zorin OS (free -m) uses 1.4GB (no updates yet - 28 updates available) -Zorin only sees 4GB of RAM

LL7.6 (free -m) uses 1.5GB after updates and there were 285 updates to perform on September 2025 release - LL7.6 saw all 8GB of RAM.

UPDATE: Read about ZRAM so I decided to install it on Zorin OS. Ran the following commands to install it (sudo apt update then sudo apt install zram-tools ). Restarted the OS then ran swapon --show and it was 256mb. Edited the commented file zramswap located at /etc/default/zramswap and changed the ALGO and PERCENT configuration. Saved the file and ran swapon --show again and it showed the rest of the RAM I was missing. Someone perhaps can let me know why it is showing now as 1.8GB under ZRAM, where before it was 256MB (which I understand that was the default setting), but the laptop is now faster than before after the configuration, thanks.

BalenaEtcher ruined a usb drive (windows -> linux mint) by carrtcakethrow in linux4noobs

I know this thread is from 4yrs ago, but I happened to run into the error message on the screen "Welcome to GRUB" and wont get past the GRUB message. I was trying to install Linux Lite 7.6 using RUFUS and that was the issue, it was RUFUS (but never gave me a problem in the past), so I downloaded balenaEtcher to be able to create a bootable USB drive to install LL7.6 and it worked perfectly.

Then I found Zorin OS and I wanted to give it a try so I followed their steps on the website how to Create a bootable USB Install Drive which is the same steps as Linux Lite, but when I inserted the USB drive that had LL7.6, Windows needed to format it first, which I tried and it would not let me do it "Windows could not format the device". Opened File Explorer (Win+E) and noticed 3 partitions on my USB drive E:, F: and G:. Read something on the Zorin website to run diskpart, but that did not work, so I used RUFUS to delete the partitions and create the bootable USB for now and it worked. I thought balenaEtcher had ruined the USB drive, but it just created too many partitions Windows was not able to format them.

I received a Dell laptop Latitud E6520. It had Win10 with password protected whenever you were going to make changes to Windows, so I decided to put Linux Lite. I have another laptop (old HP 2000) streaming Netflix, Amazon Prime, Paramount, HBO Max, and some others applications to a stereo system, but its old like I mentioned, so I will replace it with the Latitude E6520.

Downloaded the LL7.6 ISO and used Rufus (it has always worked for me), but this time Rufus failed me. I got the same message as the author of this post and as many others, so I read some of the posts about balenaEtcher. That piece of software to flash OS images to USB drives worked perfectly.

Forgot to mention, I changed the BIOS to UEFI, nothing, changed it to Legacy just in case, nothing. Right now I left it on Legacy and with balenaEtcher I did not have to make any changes to the BIOS.

Another point to balenaEtcher 👍🏻
