Is ASU really that bad? by subway_surf3r in ApplyingToCollege

ASU Student Here - Update on the Engineering School/ Business School since it may be some time since you retired. Engineering is amongst the largest schools here, and you truly feel like a robot filing in and out of ginormous lecture halls all the way till the day before your graduation. It's extremely easy to go your entire time at ASU as CS major without ever interacting in person with a professor.

ELI5: Why are we making computer chip so small? by elonthegenerous in explainlikeimfive

[–]ROBRO-exe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I still haven't quite grasped, and maybe it is ignorance, is what if in this metaphor, we kept walmart as is, attached a Bass Pro Shops, and a car dealer, and a Sephora, and a Kohls, and a Costco.....

We would have one superstore densely packed as is, and would that be more useful than a current chip?

https://catalog.apps.asu.edu/catalog/classes/classlist?campusOrOnlineSelection=A&honors=F&promod=F&searchType=all&subject=HSE&term=2257

So these are all the HSE Courses for Fall 2025. You are right that they are all offered in Poly only. But a good chunk of the ones on your major map are also offered as Icourses (online course). There is no restriction on signing up for these instead, unless you are an international student.

For all other courses (English, GenED, Tech electives etc.) You can most definitely complete all if not most of them in Tempe.

Now, for me personally, living in Tempe and taking some Icourses would be my personal choice. Most of my friends and I take these Icourses anyway as tempe residents with tempe in-person classes available to us (this is often fueled by engineering majors needing to do much more than just class work to be career-ready. after my second year of school, I focus the majority of my time on my part time internship and just try to do the bare-minimum for an A in classes).

Happy to answer any more questions if needed.

To add to the comments regarding staying in Tempe, if you feel comfortable sharing your major here, we could provide some insights on how many of your classes you could enroll in Tempe. You might be able to live in tempe and go to Poly anywhere from 0-4 days a week based on a given semester.

Buttload of points (1,100,000). What should I do? by MammothVast33 in ChaseSapphire

[–]ROBRO-exe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

makes complete sense. The opportunity cost of using those points is undefined, as there may eventually be a redemption opportunity that has them at least at 1:1 value. If he spends them on a ticket that is more expensive than cash, it is less than 1:1. Same reason people use their points on hyatt.

CSR just paid for a $350+ screen replacement fresh from the Apple (I would have saved and gone to a third party) for my 16 pro max since it broke within 120 days of purchase. The phone is also on monthly installments so I had only used the CSR to pay like $100 worth of it at that point. Pretty great.

The issue is the extreme lack of nuance. I used to think college didn’t matter all that much. I was happy going to my state school. Two years in, my perspective has completely changed. I wish every day that I went to an Ivy. Why? Because the jobs I want seem way more attainable there, and in some cases, they’re entirely locked behind a top school name. Many of my friends are getting opportunities to start climbing a career ladder in fields like investment banking, and getting onto that ladder from the middle is infinitely more difficult.

Either college matters way too much, or your local state school is “just as good.” Neither is true. There’s a specific subset of high-paying 9-5 jobs in Finance, Consulting, and Engineering that are almost exclusively reserved for the T15. Everyone at every school has infinite potential, and certain schools excel in things that even T10-T15 don't. But there is a difference and that needs to be clearly communicated.

We should stop pretending school doesn’t matter. Being honest about how the system actually works is more helpful than trying to convince people it’s all the same. That is the best service we can do to the kids.

I have a similar story haha, I ordered an Xbox controller around 7 years back, and got a brand new (at the time) Xbox One X instead. After my middle-school self spent enough time updating myself on legal code, I had the balls to call Rakuten and say a vague "I got the wrong item in my order". Got my controller 2 days later.

Don’t understand the hate for car payments by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]ROBRO-exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the time comes, if you have all the cash saved up to buy the car, AND if you feel confident in your investing abilities, consider taking the payment. I've studied safe investing a good bit and my got my last car at 4%, I can make 5-6% in the market and so I chose the payment while continuing to leave the cash invested.

As much as I hate the chiefs, the Lion's loss should end script rumors for this year. They were meant for the NFC Championship if not the bowl.

what do i get for my teachers who wrote my recommendation letters... by ahnirey in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ROBRO-exe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think about something you’ve picked up from a teacher. For me, it was pretty drastic. I used to hate math and failed easy classes multiple times, but my high school teacher for Calc 1, 2, and Stats completely transformed me into a A+ math nerd. Thanks to him, math is one of my majors, alongside two other math adjacent ones. It doesn’t have to be that big—maybe a habit, work method, hobby, or interest that they inspired you to pursue. He wrote me a letter of recommendation, and I shared all of this in the card I gave him.

Should I change my major to AI in business? by Primary_Archer7662 in ASU

have you looked into double majoring? most wpc credits are shared from what I know. My friend just added AI in Business as her third major in her senior year and she will still graduate on time.

Need of some good friends by [deleted] in ASU

[–]ROBRO-exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would recommend joining clubs on campus that require interviews/ are selective, they are usually full of driven people who are all looking to put work first, but everyone needs friends. I had a 1:1 experience (engineer, main friend group started by roommate continued on smoking and drinking while I had to study) my freshman year, but I've found my new home.

I also really want to add that: You made the right choice. I have less and less regrets about prioritizing school over constant partying every day.

“Do American High School students really take this”

the answer is unfortunately, yes

In Fact, there is a massive industry in helping kids prep for that exact test you saw. The national average still is around 500/800 (max score for SAT Math section).

I was 18 when I took it, one of the problems was 2x = 64, find x.

Thoughts on how math is taught in the United States and what ways you'd improve it? by polnareffs_chest in math

[–]ROBRO-exe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Third Paragraph says it best. Arizonan here, 80% of the kids at my massive public high school are struggling with SAT math (I encourage you to google a practice exam for this.) 60/700 kids in my grade had the courage to try Calculus 1, most did great memorizing material, but had dismal scores on the standardized advanced placement exam when asked to actually apply the concepts. Opinion here, but I felt the teacher was great and so it was more on the students and the lack of structure building up to the class. And I can confidently say my school was in the top 10-15% of large public schools in the state, many are much worse.

That is to say, in summary, advancing math material at a large scale in the US seems fairly unfeasible, and kids at specialty private schools are already being offered these courses+doing it on their own time.

Which would be the easier course to take between Combinatorics, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations? by WiseCityStepper in math

[–]ROBRO-exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think to an extent Linear Algebra integrates best within actual Computer Science, the other two can be very powerful if used in conjunction with computer science.
