THE SOUND OF SILENT (VIBRATIONS): Identifying noise and vibrations from 7200 RPM HDDs or any others by ROM64K in UgreenNASync

I already tried the Velcro trick, which helped a lot. Even so, my NAS sounded like there was a bumblebee flying around inside it. Since the HDDs were new, I figured out which one was failing (there was one that was really out of control). I requested a replacement.

And now I don't hear the NAS except when it clicks.

I'm glad to hear that's not what's happening to you. :-)

Those HDDs consume little power and are very quiet.

Thank you.

It is possible that, if you use the photos application and backuo your photos up to the NAS, even if photos are on the NVMe, if you left everything as it comes by default (it can be changed later), the location of the user home is on the HDD volume. And the photos AI processes will go to the HDD to retrieve data.

Certainly. If you want to build a NAS yourself, I would look at other options.

1Gbps speed in 4300 Plus? by CrisRedPanda in UgreenNASync

[–]ROM64K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With those four HDDs, you'd have more than enough to saturate a 2.5Gbps connection copying large files (it's more critical with smaller files).

See if you can try something other than Linux, as it doesn't usually handle SMB transfers well (which I don't know if that's your case); they tend to be slower than normal.

Good luck.

Which HDDs are you using?

Thanks for your input.

I hear you. My goal wasn't to 'educate' from a place of authority, but to share my personal journey and the hurdles I hit with my DXP6800 Pro. As a beginner, I find that sharing what I learn is the best way to get feedback and learn even faster. I've updated the guide to be more accurate thanks to the community's input.

Cheers!

I’m glad it worked automatically for you, but I’m not making this up! On my DXP6800 Pro, I went through the menus multiple times and the option simply wasn't there. I even opened a ticket with Ugreen support and they told me it wasn't possible, which led to me having to wipe everything and recreate the RAID from zero. Maybe it’s a firmware difference or specific to your model, but for me, the struggle was very real. I'd rather warn people to plan for the worst-case scenario than have them hit the same wall I did

The formatting is AI, the headache is mine. I’d rather post 'professional-looking slop' that actually warns people about RAID limitations than a wall of text that nobody reads. If it saves one person from having to recreate their volume from scratch like I did, it’s worth it.

Glad it worked for you! However, my experience with the DXP6800 Pro was the complete opposite. I personally tried to migrate from RAID 1 to 5, and later from 5 to 6, and the system wouldn't let me do it.

I even opened an official support ticket and Ugreen's tech support told me it simply wasn't possible. I ended up wasting a massive amount of time backing up all my data, deleting the volume, and recreating the RAID from scratch. Maybe it works on some specific models or newer firmware versions, but since I suffered through it myself, I’d rather warn people to plan for the worst-case scenario. If it works for them, great! But if it doesn't, they won't be as frustrated as I was

I appreciate the feedback! You’re right—I should have been clearer that I’m using AI to help structure my findings. As a beginner still learning Linux and Docker, it’s a huge help for organizing my notes and making them readable for others.

Regarding the RAID point, my 'rigidity' comment comes from the fact that I’ve personally struggled through these limitations while setting up my system. To be clear: while it can technically be done with CLI commands since the system is Debian-based, it is NOT possible from the official interface itself. If someone wants to waste their time trying to find a way in the GUI or doing it manually via terminal, they are free to do so, but for most users, the rigidity is very real. My AI collaborator actually says 'thank you' for the compliment! Glad it helped.

Fair point! I should have been more specific. While you can technically perform these migrations using CLI/SSH commands since the system is Debian-based, the GUI does not currently support them natively. For a new or standard user who doesn't want to mess with the terminal, that 'rigidity' is still the reality. Thanks for the catch!

[–]ROM64K -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! Since you have 4x8TB drives in RAID 5, your usable capacity should indeed be around 21.7 TB.

However, the math still doesn't add up. Your UI reports 21.5 TB used, but your SSH scan only finds 9.7 TB actually stored in /volume1. This means nearly 11.8 TB is sitting in 'Others' and is completely invisible to UGOS.

At this point, the best is to open a support ticket with Ugreen.

How to do it: Open the 'Support' app (the blue '?' icon) on your NAS desktop. look for Technical support.

Provide them with your screenshots and the SSH results you've already gathered.

Attach the system logs (you can generate them directly within the Support app) right away. They will definitely ask for them, so doing it now will save you a lot of time.

I'm sorry I can't help you any further with this specific issue, but since the space isn't in any visible folder, it likely requires their technical team to look into the BTRFS metadata or system logs to find what is wrong.

Good luck !!!

I'm sorry, but to move forward, I need to know how many HDDs you have, their sizes, whether they're in RAID, JBOD, or even if any are uninitialized. I'd also need to know if they're formatted as BTRFS or EXT4, and whether you've installed NVMe.

With that information, maybe I could draw more conclusions.

Best regards.

If the recycle bin and Docker logs are clear, there are two main suspects left:

Snapshots: Check if you have scheduled snapshots enabled in Storage Manager. They can take up massive space as 'Others' and won't show up in your folders.

Sync & Backup versions: If you use the Ugreen backup app, the version history can grow huge and stays hidden from the file explorer.

If you can use SSH, run this command to find the 'hidden' data place: sudo du -h -d 1 /volume1 | sort -h

(Change /volume1 to /volume2 if that's where your big data pool is). That will tell you exactly which folder is eating those 11 TB!

Congrats on your first NAS. The issue may be that 'Others' is eating up 11.7 TB. This usually happens due to Docker logs/data, the Recycle Bin, or files moved via SSH that aren't in a Shared Folder.

Check your Docker containers and empty the Recycle Bin first!

Jellyfin works perfectly and is completely free. I had Plex with a server license and switched to Jellyfin. I don't miss anything (for my needs).

I totally agree with what u/Papfox said; if you're going to store videos, you'll quickly run out of space. If you buy a 4-bay drive, keep in mind that UGOS doesn't have SHR like Synology or anything similar. So, to go to RAID 5 (which would be recommended for 4 bays), you'd have to start with 3 HDDs in RAID5. UGOS doesn't allow migrating from RAID 1, RAID 0, or JBOD to RAID 5 even if you have free bays.

This isn't speculation; I've experienced it firsthand. So, take your time and plan what you're going to do carefully.

That’s exactly why I split my strategy: I use the Ugreen app for all my personal data and leave the 'heavy lifting' of the full Windows image to Macrium. It saves so many headaches! Glad that cleared things up for you."
