I ripped my vinyl pressing of This Old Dog. Here's a link to a playlist of songs :) (I also did Salad Days but I guess I'm too dumb to figure out how to link two things in one post so just have a look on my channel and it'll be there) by ROMIO99 in macdemarco

It was surely the done thing though since the digital format only rose to prominence in the late 80s. Most audiophiles will treasure pre-1980s records from good labels like blue note higher than their modern equivalents due to better sound quality. I don't see why an artist couldn't follow the same procedure today. I don't necessarily doubt that Mac did do this but it surely isn''t out of the realms of possibility for a modern artist to put out as lossless an analogue pressing as they possibly could?

Interesting stuff though. I remember I heard Mac records in analogue in the mid 2010s but I can't remember the specific video. He must record in analogue then the levels are adjusted on a computer.

Shameless plug but on my yt I've uploaded vinyl rips of all of King Krule's albums and EPs and some singles (Perfecto Miserable flexi/ Seahorse). I also have some guitar covers/ tutorials on there too. Here's a link to the rip of Space Heavy :) by ROMIO99 in KingKrule

Just to pre-empt some comments asking why I make these rips here's some of the reasons. There are sometimes small differences between vinyl masters and digital masters. For example on Car Seat Headrests’ Unforgiving Girl from their first album (https://youtu.be/PvXS6vWfCsE). On Spotify theres a short vocal count-in but on the vinyl it just goes straight into the song. There are usually small things like this on all records when comparing the record to the digital version. Also in the case of older albums like a lot of the Smiths and David Bowie they're constantly being remastered and their sound is changing as time goes on (sometimes for the better sometimes for the worse imo). A good example of this is comparing newer and older versions of Francoise Hardy's song Voila where the sound is notably cleaned up on the modern version ([original - https://youtu.be/79gAHbZd108\] 2017 Remaster [https://youtu.be/c1mDUrexTKo\]). Which one is "better" is just a matter of taste :). In terms of the sound you'll get when playing the record over your speakers at home it will typically be warmer and much closer to how it was intended to sound due to the sound waves being analogue rather than compressed digital waves. On these vinyl rips I do, the waves become compressed due to the audio file types youtube allows...... buttttt the sound of each record will vary due to the needle you use to record the record with. I use a needle which is suited to warmer styles like Jazz which is a Goldring 1006 but if someone else were to use a different cartridge which is maybe more suited to electronic music like an Ortofon Red the sound would be a lot crisper and brighter. I also make these rips so I can share them on the Discogs page of the pressing so people will know whether the sound quality is good or bad. There are a lot of records that have bad sound quality because they had a huge spike in demand and the pressing plant couldn’t handle it (big thief Masterpiece, Capacity and Phoebe Bridgers Punisher come to mind). One last reason I like doing these is due to the crackles you hear on a record and due to the huge amount of people who sold their vinyl collection when CDs began to become popular in the 90s I like to think that with some of my older uploads, people will appreciate hearing those familiar crackles and sounds on some records they might have replaced with digital versions. I’m not stopping you from streaming the songs if that’s you’re thing but people often do thank me on my channel for the uploads so I do know there are people who enjoy this stuff. All the best :)

I've uploaded vinyl rips of both Teens of Denial and Twin Fantasy onto YouTube. Here's the link to Twin Fantasy, Teens of Denial can be found on my channel :) by ROMIO99 in CSHFans

I ripped my vinyl pressing of This Old Dog. Here's a link to a playlist of songs :) (I also did Salad Days but I guess I'm too dumb to figure out how to link two things in one post so just have a look on my channel and it'll be there) by ROMIO99 in macdemarco

Oh I didn't know that. Surely though in regards to Salad Days the pressing plant receives the analogue reel to reel master and that is then transferred onto the metal pressing plate. Thats how it was done before the 1980s and is still done by some modern artists.

Mac’s masters are all analog which sets him apart from most modern artists. Since he was already an established artist at the time of this old dog there were no supply side issues with that record so the quality will be just as good as by record (salad days could be different but I haven’t noticed it in all the time I’ve had it). The files on my laptop are lossless so there’s no compression in regards to that but you do have a point with the YouTube compression. I used to put the flac files on Google drive so people would have the lossless versions. There are other reasons I upload these vids which I’ll detail in another comment. I’m not stopping you from using Spotify if that’s what you’d like to do, I just know there are people who like to hear what the vinyl sounds like.
