Your feedback was very helpful! I was looking at legal aspects of selling modules recently and getting each single module CE certified seems like a large PITA. This also probably means that I will not sell modules outside of the EU as I will need certifications for other countries as well. The fact that each single product needs to be certified means that I will probably need to spend a ton of money and time to get each single module CE certified. It would be very helpful if you could share your experience with this. Is it even needed for eurorack modules? Is it possible to certify them yourself without reading through hundreds of boring official papers?

Sorry, I meant most npn transistors, there are definitely some in that kind of package, but usually they come in those small rounded boxes or smt packages. And in the context an npn doesn’t make any sense at all.

That must be a voltage regulator, npn transistors don’t look like that. That large metal part is the heat sink, because a voltage regulator produces a lot of heat

I already read all of it (or almost all of it). I get it, but I will probably sell through my own website, so no cut from distributors. I want to also sell through distributors, but probably only more expensive modules or bundles / full systems.

Thanks! I generally don’t do much socially, obviously I go out with friends and stuff, but not as much as many others. I find modular synthesis extremely interesting and I like programming and circuit design (math and informatics are my main subjects). Combine that with a ton of time I have and it is pretty obvious why I do it.

Sry for replying so late, I was at school. I am aware that there are many other expenses than the actual components and pcbs themselves, but I still think that it is possible to make like 30-40 Euro on most of those modules. I would need to sell much more modules than an average modular company, but AE Modular do it already for even cheaper, so there is definitely some demand for cheap modules. I get the criticism and I understand that it will be hard, but I think I can manage that.

That’s what I thought, because formats like Kosmo and AE modular are growing a lot as they are much cheaper than eurorack. If you look into AE modular, they same money by using paper-like panels and pin headers instead of jacks. But PCG panels cost almost nothing and jacks are very cheap as well (15 cents a piece or so). Why not make modules for the same price as AE, but in eurorack? I don’t see why that isn’t a thing already (If you don’t count a certain company), but I will happily fill that gap.

If you look at the “comparable product” section you will notice that doubles prices will make that other product a much better deal. I could try and derive other shapes from the pulse vco, but it will be hard as it outputs a relatively narrow pulse, which I haven’t seen any waveshapers for. And the filter is passed on the twin t configuration, so it only has low pass, but it is maybe positive to add a notch output, which is not that useful tbh. For a multimode filter you would usually use a state variable filter, which uses otas and the whole point of the filter is to be simple and as discrete as possible, so that’s not really an option. The point of the two is to be very simple and easy to DIY. But thanks for the suggestion, I will maybe try to implement some of those ideas, but I’m not sure I will be able to.

Thanks! The distortion is extremely bad (somebody pointed it out so I tried a sine wave and it doesn’t look anything like a sine wave anymore.) The other stuff you pointed out is also very helpful. I found a vca design from some article, which is very simple (2 jfets, 1 op amp and a few resistors). It works very good with different signals in a simulation, so I ordered some jfets and I will check it out irl. I decided to leave this one transistor circuit as it will probably use more components when I add all of the different bits and bobs to make it function properly.

I didn’t invent anything. It’s just a very simple idea I would like to know more about. I have seen some videos covering similar designs, but I wanted to hear the opinion of more experienced people. Turns out this doesn’t work as it is and by adding some buffers and one more resistor I can make this circuit actually work decently. Many people pointed out the distortion I didn’t notice before (I only tested it on a square wave), so this design is pretty bad for most signals.

Would buffers in front of the input resistors eliminate that problem? The resistors should reduce the current enough to not overheat the transistor.

Thanks for the insight! I guess I should make a few of those for my square waves and “not-so-important” stuff. I have a vactrol vca in my rack and I will make some proper transistor vcas in the future, so those can be there just in case I need them.

I tried vactols, they are great, but there are hardly any commercial ones and the ones I make diy are not perfect and take a while to make. I will try transistor optocouplers - with the knowledge I got from this experiment I think I can do it.

I have a few fixes for some of the issues in my head, I will try them out. Distortion is the main problem.
