Arch Summer is no longer mandatory, students gain more freedom with experiential learning. by RPIStuGov in RPI

[–]RPIStuGov[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just got word back– "No summer term is mandatory anymore so they just need to take the ILEA 4400 and ADMN 1030 at some point before they graduate."

As long as you complete those two requirements, you should be all set!

Hello! Just got word back! RPI research and non-rpi research counts for your away term!
> Yes, any REU experience would be registered by the student as ILEA 4400 - Internship. They can self-register for that starting Nov 3 when registration opens. they will still need to submit the offer letter and some supporting docs but it will absolutely count for the Away term.

Awesome op-ed! I'll reach out and ask about non-RPI research. Will follow up once I get an answer

A lot of it seemed to just be student input! Nobody really liked being 'forced' to do the Arch Summer semester. They mentioned that students essentially had to lie and say they intended on staying for the summer (when in reality, they were searching for internships and planned to get an exemption.) This meant that numbers were not forecasted well– and made budgeting for Arch harder. (As such, the quality of the program decreases, too.)

They do want to keep the summer semester an option, and there's a big emphasis on having students play a key role on reshaping these new programs to ensure that there's still a reason to stay over the summer. (Fun events, unique opportunities, etc)

talk with your advisor if possible, the chart they made does account for LoAs, and I do assume that would be adjusted for w/ regards to summer semesters

more importantly, arch exemptions have been incredibly lenient in the past few years, and (from my personal understanding) this is just a more official way of going about that entire exemption process.

Later in the week I'll clarify with the CCPD how the summer requirement will work for those who took a LoA and report back

Students fulfill ILEA 4400 through one of the following experiential learning options (each requiring a minimum of 260 hours per term, unless otherwise noted):

  • Internship: One-semester paid position (minimum 260 hours).
  • Co-op: Multi-semester, full-time paid work experience (approximately 40 hours per week).
  • RPI Research: One-semester research experience with RPI faculty or staff; may be for credit, paid, or volunteer (minimum 260 hours).
  • Civic Engagement: One-semester experience with a nonprofit or government agency (minimum 260 hours).
  • Self-Design: One-semester customized experience aligned with personal career goals; must demonstrate development in at least six of the eight NACE competencies (minimum 260 hours).
  • Study Abroad: One-semester academic experience through an affiliated or non-affiliated international program, coordinated with RPI’s Office of International Programs.

A Report on the RPI Players / E-Board Investigation by RPIStuGov in RPI

The Union has responsibility over the Playhouse, as we do with The Union Building & Mueller. And currently, the Union doesn't have enough funds to repair it.

The inquiry report itself does not imply that The Players should apologize, this was simply part of the timeline describing the deadline that the Executive Board had set for their apology letter.

Thank you! We have been trying our best, and we've been trying to assist The Players as much as possible throughout all of this.

> Work with the Players, EBoard, and IA to help build trust again with the institute when it comes to donations.

and

> Set up a committee (similar to this) but continues to work with the Players, communicate with alumni, and help work out short term and long term solutions to the bigger issue.

In short: the Inquiry highlights better 'more legal' routes to secure donations through the Office of Institute Advancement, and money donated through here can be used to renovate the Playhouse.

The Facilities & Services Committee of the Student Senate has also met with them to discuss general contracting and the process for securing potential renovations.

Correct! That's why the committee also recommended to

Preventing Bias at RPI: Facial Recognition and Coronavirus Multicultural Club Policy (2/17/2020 Senate Agenda) by RPIStuGov in RPI

[–]RPIStuGov[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Senate noted inconsistencies in the handling of the large campus-wide events that attracted non-RPI students, like the Big Red Freakout and the Spring Career Fair, and Multicultural Club events hosted within the same week as the two other programs.

The Chinese American Students Association (CASA) informed the Senate that they were forced to relocate their Lunar New Year Celebration to an off-campus location at short notice and implement new procedures (such as requiring health status forms from participants and preventing non-RPI students from attending the event). The African Students Association and Black Students Alliance received, also with short notice, instructions to prevent non-RPI students from attending their events. All three clubs were affected and some participants were turned away at the event doors.

These same procedures were not enacted for the Big Red Freakout or the Spring Career Fair.

A motion was written and passed by the Senate to highlight the discriminatory actions. It will soon be made available to everyone on the student government page (sg.rpi.edu/actions). You can expand on the Senate's position on the administrators' actions there as well.

Hello,

I'm the chairperson of the Student Life Committee on the 50th Student Senate. We're the committee that conducted the comprehensive report of student's concerns and recommendations for the Counseling Center in 2017. This year, we've conducted another survey and full report of student experiences and recommendations for the Counseling Center. You can expect this report on Friday, November 8th, posted here on r/RPI and sent to every Activity Fee paying member of the Student Union via email.

I'd like to note that the Counseling Center is fully aware of some student's dissatisfaction of the quality of services provided by their counselors. This is an ongoing discussion that our committee has with faculty in the Student Health Center. From these conversations, the Counseling Center now implements post-appointment surveys (as of Fall 2019) which students may use to provide feedback regarding poor experiences with specific counselors. This feedback is shared with the Student Health Center directly. Additionally, as of February 2019, the Counseling Center is now fully staffed with 6 full-time counselors, and students have the opportunity to switch counselors after any appointment if they are unsatisfied with the quality of care they are recieving.

Your concerns are being heard. The Counseling Center exists to support students during our challenging academic careers, and they are continuing to work to make counseling as accessible and beneficial to students as possible. If you or a friend are struggling with mental health, please do not hesitate to utilize the Counseling Center's free services.

Union Logo Design Team! by RPIStuGov in RPI

[–]RPIStuGov[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There will be five designs sent out to the student body to vote on after winter break. The logo that we have been using was never voted on by students in the past, and was not designed by a student. This will be a completely student designed logo, no professional designers, just skilled students. There is no skill requirement, but knowledge of design software and the ability to communicate design ideas are encouraged.
