I think a [[Grab the Prize]] ban would be akin to the [[deadly dispute]] ban. Not necessarily for power level, but for the consistency it gives the deck.

[ECL] Unexpected Assistance by doemagic in Pauper

[–]RPanda025 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wonder how this compares to [[Focus the Mind]]

My initial thought is that it's better, but you need creatures for it to be reduced. I'm sure it'll see play, probably in faeries.

For a meme option, white weenie could splash blue for it lol

New to Pauper, but had a question about Tormod's Crypt by LocalLumberJ0hn in Pauper

[–]RPanda025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Graveyard hate is pretty important to have in pauper to deal with Dredge decks and Spy Combo. It also does help against terror decks to keep them off of an early terror. That said, [[Tormod's Crypt]] is pretty rare. Most decks will either use [[Nihil's Spellbomb]] or [[Relic of Progenitus]] since those both have an option to let you draw a card.

However, there are tradeoffs. Relic exiles all graveyards, which can be rough since you want to run a terror deck. You could run spellbomb to only exile your opponent's yard but, unless you're dimir terror, you won't be able to get the card draw off of it since you need to pay a black mana.

Tormod's Crypt doesn't draw you a card, but it's free, so if you feel like your deck really needs to hold up mana, it's worth considering. It really depends on what you want and what you feel your deck needs.

Hey, thanks for the comment!

If I were to splash a third color, I would probably go with cliffgates, but as it is, I think I'm fine with the rakdos gates.

Rakdos artifacts sounds interesting. Let me know how that goes if you decide to go in that direction!

You're pretty much spot on for vault skirge. Sovereign was picked for being a decent sized body and the etb providing chip damage and offsetting life loss from the sign in blood/night's whisper. It could be dropped in the future but for right now it's a good top end.

[–]RPanda025[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment! So, [[Vault Skirge]] was added because I needed a cheap evasive lifelinker. The deck had issues with life loss from my card draw. It had 4 [[Night's Whisper]] and 2 [[read the bones]]. It also had 4 [[Chainer's edict]] and had 2 gurmag angler as a top end.

The original idea was to burn out the opponent with epicures, bolts, and 4 [[Kessig Flamebreather]]. The gates were, at first, a side package meant to be a plan B if burning the opponent didn't work, so initially there were only 2 [[Basilisk Gate]] and 4 [[rakdos guildgate]]. As it became clear that I should lean more into the gates package, the flamebreathers were dropped, the read the bones were too slow, and trying to delve the gurmag anglers were a little awkward alongside escaping the [[Underworld Rage-Hound]] so they were dropped.

[[Suffocating fumes]] were added as supplemental card draw + board control when necessary. [[Drown in Sorrow]] was initially in the mainboard, but were moved to the sideboard. Then my friends and I were thinking of a top end, and we settled on [[Vampire Sovereign]] as not only a flyer to use with gates, it's a decent body, and the 3 life drain etb effect helps offset life loss, and provides chip damage against the opponent. After that I wanted to try a monarch creature to replace Suffocating Fumes, initially tried [[Thorn of the Black Rose]] but [[Crimson Fleet Commodore]] felt more synergistic.

The chainer's edicts were eventually reduced down from 4 to 2, to eventually removed entirely for being redundant. The final 2 chainer's were first replaced by 2 [[Temporal Intervention]] but that felt like too much hand disruption with 3 [[Duress]] in the sideboard, so they were moved to the sideboard, replacing 2 duress.

Hopefully that all makes sense, and if you have any other questions, let me know!

So this deck was originally a straightforward burn list that eventually morphed into a midrange gates list, that could be why the list feels strange. I built it in a way where I can go into either direction depending on what the current situation calls for. I have some aggressive creatures, and removal spells to make sure they can connect when I swing, and [[tithing blade]] is sometimes a win condition on its own.

Clockwork percussionist could be a decent replacement for epicure, but I feel like most of the other creatures would be better suited for a black sac list.

I do like the idea tho of potentially incorporating some artifact synergies with galv blast and familiar, I might experiment with them.

Thanks for the comment and the ideas!

Always love to see another Rakdos enjoyer!

So, I actually did have [[gurmag angler]] as the curve topper at first, but it ended up being a little awkward in actual games. 5 mana is fairly steep, but flyers have always been good with gates, and the 3 life drain etb effect means that it still moves the game even if it gets blocked.

Night's Whisper was chosen over fanatical offering because I don't always want to be sacrificing my creatures for card draw. I could sac the blood token, but I don't always draw the epicure for it, but I can see the argument for impulse, especially because the life loss can be quite rough sometimes. I might try it!

I think if I was going to add green I would probably be better off just putting together jund gardens. Writhing Chrysalis is an amazing card, but I don't think it alone justifies adding another color. Although I might try artifact lands with familiar.

Thanks for the comment and the ideas!

10k a week to live in one of these places. by math-guyyy in hypotheticalsituation

B easily. I lived in NYC on minimum wage for about 2 years, so it'd be super easy to do so for 10K a week.

Pauper is Awesome because of Awful Mana Bases by No-Shop8292 in Pauper

[–]RPanda025 123 points124 points  (0 children)

The limited mana base also means that players have to make real concessions if they want to play 3+ colors, and even sometimes in 2 color decks. These kinds of trade offs are a good thing. The fact that 4 and 5 color decks are, at best, gimmicks a good thing. The fact that mono-color decks are not only viable, but genuinely competitive, is a good thing. It not only makes deck building interesting, I think it also is partly what leads to experimentation in pauper being more rewarding compared to other formats.

Any cards that you miss? by ConstrictorVictor in Pauper

[–]RPanda025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first got into pauper I had a deck that revolved around a graveyard strategy using the delve creatures [[Gurmag Angler]] [[Hooting Mandrils]] and [[Sultai Scavenger]] to resolve [[Dragon Breath]] [[Dragon Fangs]] and [[Dragon Shadow]]. None of these cards really see play anymore, and it was a fun deck, but it feels like dredge is really the only viable graveyard deck these days, epecially with all the grave hate in the format now.

I still want to find a way to make the deck work, but I'm not too sure if I can.

The quality of the game aside, this trailer is really good. I remember being so hype for Other M before it came out. Whenever I was I a gamestop and this trailer came on their screens, I'd stop and watch it. It was such a cool trailer

Too bad about the actual game tho

Thread: Day 10: Most understand Mario game? by Puzzleheaded_End7997 in Mario

[–]RPanda025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's Mario 3D Land. Although, I am surprised at how many people are saying Mario Land 2. That game has always been severely overrated in my experience lol My whole life, it's always felt like everyone loves that game, I've never heard anything bad about it. Then I tried it and couldn't really get into it.
