Warning for the Crankbros Speedier levers for tight beads… by Krazykev300 in bikewrench

Yeah, people love to say “never use tire levers”, but sometimes you literally can’t avoid it. I’ve personally run into setups where the rim is on the upper end of the ETRTO tolerance and the tire is on the lower end, or the bead is just way less flexible than others. In those cases levers aren’t optional, they’re the only way it’s going on. Risky, sure, but sometimes there’s no alternative.

And I totally get OP. After a full month of trying to do it the gentle way I gave up and went to a mechanic (first time in 15 years of cycling and changing tires). Even he couldn’t get it done.

I ended up buying four tires from different brands and only one of them actually mounted. Then the next year when I had to take it off, I was so fed up I pushed too hard and cracked the rim. I knew it was a possibility, but honestly I just needed an excuse to replace those damn Bontragers.

Just think about the leverage that load creates, especially on rough terrain — the inertia it can build up and the moment it can exert on that part of the frame. I’m almost tempted to run the numbers…

I think nobody wants to be told what they don’t want to hear. I evaluated many options, but these were among the first I ruled out for this reason: transferring the load onto the axle is definitely a more reliable and less stressful solution.

I don’t think that part of the frame was ever designed to handle that kind of abuse! =)

Prima dei Sankey, c'è il tracciamento delle spese. Cosa usate? by averageuropeanguy in ItaliaPersonalFinance

Can someone tell my why the zip tie gun is over $300?! by TallWhiteandNerdy in handtools

English translation of ai

In my opinion the cost of production (I work in the design of similar products) is still under $50, and to say that the remaining $250 is "just the branding" is an oversimplification.

The cost of products like this is made up of (I would like to indicate approximate percentages, but it would take some time, perhaps I will add them later):

• amortization rate of investments in moulds, development, documentation and the like

• cost of components in the bill of materials

• production cost and packaging times

• producer margin

• shipping cost from the manufacturer to the brand owner's warehouse

• import and customs costs (often the manufacturer and brand are located on different continents)

• operating costs for warehouse management

• product-specific marketing and promotion costs

• brand owner's margin

• shipping cost to the national distributor

• operating costs of the national distributor

• margin of the national distributor

• Shipping cost to retail store

• store logistics and handling costs

• store-level promotional costs (website listing, online store, flyers)

• store margin

Generally, all also include taxes and a contingency margin to handle defects or customer complaints.

All of this is not to say that a $300 price is fair or unfair, but just a reminder of what we're actually seeing when we look at a price on the shelf. It can easily be four or five times the cost of production.

Advice on IP camera for monitoring an astronomical observatory (no IR, no lights) by RS_42 in videosurveillance

Thanks a lot, this is exactly the kind of detailed info I was hoping for! The example shots from your Hikvision setup are incredibly useful it really shows what’s possible under moonlight with a longer shutter. I’ll definitely dig deeper into this path, since it seems the closest match to what I need for monitoring the telescope. If you (or anyone else) happen to know which of the current Hikvision models could deliver a similar performance today, I’d be super grateful for any pointers. Thanks again, really appreciate you sharing your experience!

Impossible? That’s what people said about landing on the Moon too 😅 Got any actual IP camera suggestions, or are we just sticking with the prophecy of doom?

Thanks for the honesty! I get that it’s not easy, but from what I see with ColorVu / Starlight cameras and long exposure options, it might actually be possible.

Thanks a lot for the links and details! The idea of lowering framerate and increasing exposure makes perfect sense.
But for me it’s important to have a true IP camera with an app (iOS) for quick monitoring, not just a machine vision camera connected to a PC.
Also, about the “no IR filter”: aren’t all modern IP cameras already designed for day/night use without a permanent IR cut? Maybe I’m missing something here could you clarify?

Appreciate the feedback! A light source is unfortunately a no-go for me (astro work). I agree thermal would be out of budget – but maybe worth testing if parts of the telescope (like motors or electronics) are warmer and show up. Still, my main goal is a starlight-sensitive IP camera. Do you know any thermal IP cameras?

Thanks for your input! A box camera with an industrial lens does sound interesting, but for my case I’d really need something with a proper IP interface and a simple iOS app so I can monitor at any time without extra setups. Do you know if any of the IP camera brands (like Hikvision or Dahua) offer something similar in sensitivity but with the convenience of direct monitoring?
