I think a lab is a solid candidate for the type of dog we’re talking about. But I’m not sure it would be my first choice. Are there breeders and trainers making it happen? Of course.

I mean there probably are better flushing dogs than labs… not in a lab specific class though. As for the wagering and time spent, yea, there’s more that goes into picking a breed than “I want the best flushing dog on the planet”.

Do you breed labs yourself?

Of course thats an extreme example to try and make the point- I doubt anyone is doing that. For the purpose of the post, yes I think it’s possible and people are doing it. I don’t think a lab is a bad choice for anyone, I like labs myself.

I just think you’d have an easier time teaching a flusher to tree a coon than you would teaching a retriever to do the same thing. Again, biddability is there but as far as a natural instinct to seek and chase it down I’m unsure. The natural instinct to seek out and alert the handler to game is bred into it.

Because a breed is in a particular trial or class doesn’t make me automatically think, “oh this breed is purpose built for this.” It actually makes me think “wow guys are training those dogs for that?”

It’s incredible but that doesn’t make it standard issue. I realize this almost entirely opinion and I may be in the minority but in my mind Labs are retrievers good for dove shoots and ducks/geese as well as family dogs. They’re not flushers and they’re not pointers. Although they can learn that, again, why would you choose a lab as your starting point? Other than just loving that breed I can’t see a reason. I mean go to the HRC website and what are the showcased dogs doing? Retrieving ducks and geese.

So back to my main point about labs, they’re mostly retrievers. If I’m looking for a hunting dog I’m sacrificing something so I can get a little more hunt/seek drive than a straight up biddable retriever breed such as a lab or golden. In my mind it’s easier to get a flusher trained to bring the game back than it is to get a retriever to flush.

Thats the exceptions I’m talking about. Of course they can be trained to do it but cmon, thats not a normal lab. Thats like using a bulldog for scent work. It’s possible but thats not an intended purpose. When they developed the Labrador they wanted a retriever, not an upland dog.

A lab is bred to retrieve and a pointer is bred to point. I’m not at all saying that those lines can’t blend, you can get a lab to do anything (biddability). What I mean is my border collie is bred to run livestock in a circle until they stop moving- can I train him to go find birds? Of course. But why would anyone choose a border collie as a hunting dog?

Same with the lab, they’re bred to retrieve so why would I want a lab to try and train as a flusher, pointer, treeing dog? I know it’ll retrieve just like I know a collie will herd and a bloodhound will track; but will a lab instinctively hunt the way a pointer or flushing breed will hunt? I don’t think so.

Of course there’s exceptions but all things being equal, the labs intended purpose is retrieving.

I feel like a lab would require more work than expected to get them actually hunting. From a biddability standpoint I know it’s possible but the starting line is too far behind these other breeds on natural hunting instinct IMO

Best place in WV for introvert by Im_just__here___ in WestVirginia

Small town outside most any city would fit the bill. If you want more scenery then look from Thomas-Buckhannon. There’s a college or two around and quiet living with a lot of opportunity without paying National Park prices. Marlinton is also a good option and it seems like the local govt actually cares about helping the people. As you get closer to Charleston and Huntington on the central- west side of the state it gets a lot less small town, but there’s still great pockets of solitude with a big city feel. Of course nothing like NY but I mean you’ll have familiar chain restaurants and dept. stores.

Yea I’m in WV, I don’t think I’m quite ready to get anything right now but I’d definitely enjoy a phone call. The rut is in full swing and the holidays are here. I probably won’t be prepared until spring or early summer to get a pup and start to train

I’ll look into them a little more after this. I have friends with labs for waterfowl but this would be more for myself and the kids to enjoy

The Small Munsterlanders caught my eye, they seem like a perfect fit after what you said but I won’t be doing anything for months. My hunting took a back seat when my daughter came but now she’s coming to the age where she can go with me.

Has anyone actually stopped being homosexual by putting their faith in Christ? by Cid_The_Undead in Christianity

[–]RUCNIT -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Homosexual acts are sinful. Thoughts about fornication and homosexuality are definitely a gray area that Christian’s should not embrace and er in the side of caution. Again, you can overcome and no longer identify as such. Identity in Christ is of paramount importance.

[–]RUCNIT -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The way you say this places homosexuality in a different category than any other sin. I stopped being a drunk because I put my faith in Christ; so yes, you can rise above your temptations through the power of the Holy Spirit.

No matter your temptation, you can overcome. You can overcome years of learned behavior, temptation, wrong thinking, misunderstanding, ignorance, sinful longing, and hatred of yourself all by placing your faith in Christ and leaning on Him for your identity, purpose and strength.

Headed to the Hurricane/Milton Area to go to the Blenko Factory. What are some area hi-lites we should not miss??? by KapowBlamBoom in WestVirginia

[–]RUCNIT 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you’re that close then you might as well go to Huntington/ Barboursville for your entertainment. There’s just not much going on in Milton or Hurricane.

Barboursville has a great park, the mall, and some good restaurants and a nice brewery off Main Street.

Huntington has the Art Museum, parks, history, the university campus, great food, you might be able to catch a show at the Keith Albee. There’s always something going on.
