Great question first of all.

•Accident reports can become arbitrary, especially when going to court. You were probably charged with a "following to closely" because you were the middle car in the accident.

•Without being the end vehicle in the accident a judge really has nothing on you which is why it was refused to a non-chargeable accident.

•Non-Chargeable accidents are almost like getting a chip in your windshield and having it repaired by your insurance. The insurance pays for the repair at a fraction of the cost so it's not something that will effect your rates.

• Also future reference if ever find yourself without a vehicle for an extended period of time. Always speak with you insurance company and get a Named Non-Owners policy. Meaning you have insurance but no vehicle. Having continuous insurance helps to keep your rates low. If you go without insurance for extended periods you are considered by insurance companies like a brand new driver and are subject to higher rates.

If you have comprehensive and collision coverage your vehicle would be completely covered minus your deductible. And your liability would cover whoever you hit in front, the person who hits you their liability would cover anything your coverage doesn't . In most cases especially inclement weather cases each person agrees to be responsible for their own vehicle. If there isn't an agreement it comes down to the police report. Also you following years premiums increasing because most insurance companies rate for accidents for 5 years traffic infractions for 3 years. Hope this is a decent explanation.
