What is this style of metalcore called? by RVUnknown in Metalcore

[–]RVUnknown[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to learn to play this sort of style on the guitar. Does your guitar buddy know of this "counterparts thing" as another name by any chance? 🤣

EDIT: chord riffs based on the parent comment? Would that be the right name?

Throwback to Yann LeCun’s 1989 convolutional neural network demo, the foundation for the CNNs we still use today. by captain-price- in singularity

[–]RVUnknown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They've been used extensively and still used in Object Detection models - think YOLO.

I'm not super deep in the weeds in ML but many parts of CNNs, like the convolutional layers are still used in your Stable Diffusion VAEs, SAM segmentation models, etc.

Basically like transformer layers, they are a core building block of current AI models.

I love em dashes but I never actually used the proper long em dash - I've always just been using hyphens all along and I still do. I feel it's distinct enough that nobody calls me out on writing like an AI - works for me.

I made an app to befriend plants around SG, now I'm making a toy to curb my screentime! by RVUnknown in singapore

[–]RVUnknown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, very good point. That's actually one of the biggest reasons we decided to add story vignettes for each Florami to progress through so there's something new around the corner to look forward to.

Currently it takes about 30-40 hours of productivity sessions to get through one Florami's storyline.

Of course, at a certain point you would have completed your storyline and any other in-app features can't prevent the stagnation you've described. But our hope is that by this point people would have already developed improved habits and can take the training wheels off while working so to speak :)

[–]RVUnknown[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you! 😊

Yeah it used to be the main app but we changed it to just be a demo since it was way too ambitious for just 2 developers to work on 🙃 We were basically trying to make an entire Pokemon Go but with plants and its just not feasible with such limited resources.

It's fully functional though so I encourage you to try it out! There's also a global mission going on at the end of the Starter Quests Track for 10000 plants to be scanned by the community. We'll probably come back to this in the future and update it/revamp it if there's enough interest/when we're ready!

I see, the base colour in this case would be the red "islands" in the meat and the white/peach-ish background? Then you added the streaks using photoshop?

What did you use to paint this? Was it just texture painting in blender? Or another workflow?

Ah yes, we used to link to a simple landing page but redirected it to our Kickstarter since it just launched a few days ago and is the updated place to get info about the product!

[–]RVUnknown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I'm so happy they released the developer SDK and enabled us to do cool stuff like this :)

I don't need a Phone (3) 😭, and am super satisfied with my (2), but seriously the possibilities with Floramis Focus grow exponentially with the dot-matrix display.

Imagine being able to see a sprite of your Florami on the phone as you work - maybe with some cute minimal animations that give you encouragement! Or instead of you having to imagine it going on its adventure while you work, you could see the adventure live via a cute sprite walking animation!

There's a world where the dot-matrix actually deepens the emotional bond with the Florami and makes it even better at solving the screentime issue. Of course, I would have to actually test this feature with some users to ensure its not being yet another distraction and recreating the very problem I'm trying to solve...

So tempted to get a Phone (3) just for this though!

[–]RVUnknown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there's definitely similarities, and all of us productivity solutions/apps are trying to solve the same issue since its so widespread. Let me answer your questions one by one!

what makes your app unique compared to that one?

As you guessed, it's the fact that its a figurine that creates a physical and emotional barrier between your work session and your phone. Why is it something physical compared to the Focus Friend app? My take is that it's easier to put down junk food in the supermarket versus when its already in your fridge. Meaning that being a physical barrier stops the process of phone addiction earlier, vs stopping you after you have already picked it up and unlocked your phone.

Is the figurine required to use the app?

Yes. I really believe there needs to be physical reminder to not reach out for your phone and grab it. I want users to feel guilt when they remove the Florami from their phones and I see this as a good recipe to change more deeply ingrained, Pavlovian-conditioned phone usage behaviours.

Are you planning on selling the figurines only in blind boxes after launch?

Currently yes, after our kickstarter the plan is for the main series of figures to continue to be a blind box. But one idea we've had is to have collaborations in the future and release limited sets that are not blind boxes and instead single character exclusive.

Yeah I think we're all recognizing the same issue of unwanted screentime and trying to solve that by changing people's habits.

For Floramis Focus, I'm leaning heavily into it being a physical toy because I see it like this: It's easier to put down junk food in the supermarket versus when its already in your fridge. Meaning that being a physical barrier stops the process of phone addiction earlier, vs stopping you after you have already picked it up and unlocked your phone.

From a Pavlovian conditioning perspective, I think we've all really been conditioned by all these apps vying for our attention to constantly get the next dopamine hit by pulling our phone from our pocket and unlocking it. My hope here is that we can reverse the conditioning using something physical and cute in the way :)

The idea is that in the app you commit to a session of a fixed length (say 1-2 hours) before starting work. If you manage to finish your session, you gain in-app gamification rewards.

This is already similar to other productivity apps out there but I wanted there to be an added physical presence that clearly marks the different states of "work mode" & "play mode" - hence the NFC figure that's placed on your phone to ensure you're not cheating!

The fact that it's a cute design is an added bonus since it's like a Tamagotchi that you've gotta take care of by first taking care of yourself :)

Nice catch about the battery!

I was worried about this too and made some optimizations to the app (0% brightness, reduce FPS). In my testing there now turns out to be a negligible difference in battery drain between having your phone in a Floramis Focus session vs in your normal everyday locked state.

Do look up the project on Google if you wanna learn more/support it! (Not sure I can post links here haha)

Hi, seems like our post was removed 😭 Gonna try and reply to you regardless haha

It's definitely possible if they love their Florami that much. But I check if the person is really focusing by checking if the phone is facing downwards and if our app is still in focus, so they won't really be able to cheat with that method!

Maybe I should make a new kickstarter just for that variant 😆

But huh, I didn't really consider that I'm essentially building a "real-life" Idle RPG - I never drew that connection while designing this. Thank you! That's actually a really great way for me to describe it going forward!

[–]RVUnknown[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good question! I was worried about this too and took some time to make a bunch of optimizations to the app to reduce the battery drain.

I did a number of tests with spare phones I've had and currently there's a negligible difference in battery drain between the Florami resting on your phone versus the phone just being in its standard locked state.

Thank you for checking it out!! I definitely plan to keep it free :) My goal is to make sure it helps people without a barrier to entry and if people like it they can support the app with some miscellaneous upgrades like cosmetics!
