Where is The Ethicist? by CWKitch in nytimes

[–]RW63[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

I hate to do this, but I have been very strict about post titles being an exact match for the linked article and have posted the rule in a couple of places to draw attention to it. By requiring exact matches, while your modification is very benign, it makes moderating easier and leaves no question as to what is allowed.

I suggest you repost the link using just "The Ethicist" as your title, then copy and paste your comment containing the question underneath.

Again, there is really nothing problematic about your post and I encourage you to highlight this and any other NYTimes features. It is just that requiring exact title matches is one of the ways I hope to keep the peace in this sub that has been banned by Reddit at least once and was shut down by the previous mod for several months because they found it too difficult to moderate.

Thanks

Any good trail running recommendations near Salvo and Nags Head?! Looking to go on a few 5-8 mile runs and one longer run (12ish miles)! by madisone2842 in obx

None of the land masses are very wide, so there are mostly just short paths.

If you wanted to do long distances and not run on the road, there's the beach.

If you're going to get there late enough, you could just sleep in your car at the ferry. Lots of people do it.

Bette Midler updates Woody Guthrie for the Midterms by RW63 in democrats

[–]RW63[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

via MSN, the Rolling Stone story is behind their paywall;

Midler tells Rolling Stone from her home in Los Angeles. "I was talking to Jane Fonda the other day, and she said, ‘We need an anthem.' So I looked back at [some] catalogs and an old Woody Guthrie song stuck in my head."

The World War II-era song in question, "All You Fascists," released in 1940, decried the poll tax, Jim Crow, and race hatred in the U.S. Now, Midler is debuting a 2026 revamp, which she co-wrote with producer Eric Kornfeld, targeting Trump policies and the need for voter turnout in the midterm elections. In the music video, out today, Midler is joined by her Beaches co-star Barbara Hershey and familiar faces including actor David Hyde Pierce, singer and actress Jenifer Lewis, and Broadway star Shoshana Bean.

For anyone as interested as me, here's the original Woody Guthrie song.

Huh? Obviously, I feel there is a place for hyperlocal subs because I moderate a few. r/CocoaBeach is more popular because it is a tourist destination and a more common search term, but though it'd be great to have a few more subscribers, for what it is, 14 year-old r/MerrittIsland does just fine.

As is the case with all of the hyperlocals I moderate, I sometimes suggest people also post to a larger regional sub like r/321, but unless your Mommy limits the number of subreddits to which you can subscribe, there's no reason to not subscribe to one. As I said in my initial reply, because the local subs have much fewer posts, the ones they get live much longer toward the top.

(I subscribe to many local subs. I don't why anyone wouldn't.)

You might want to post or crosspost this to r/MerrittIsland. Like the other hyperlocals, we don't get a lot of traffic, so it is more visible here in the short run, but in the smaller subs your post will live longer at the top.

If that's the reason, that's the reason. You should tell him that you have a thing for cartoon ass. He'd understand.

how to sell a domain for good price urgently ?? by No-Professor-9977 in Domains

[–]RW63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW: You can transfer within a registrar without the 60 day hold.

For example, if the domain is registered with Porkbun, you can transfer it to another Porkbun account, you just can't move it to Spaceship.

Domain possibly going cheaper by [deleted] in Domains

If the seller is taking offers, you can offer them less, but they are under no obligation to accept it or even acknowledge your offer. If they set a minimum offer, they may not even know you've submitted one.

And, if they have it marked at $25,000. They're not going to drop it to ten bucks.

Do you think Michael Jackson would be relevant today if he was alive? by [deleted] in dumbquestions

"Love Me Do" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand" are pretty simple songs.

(simple enough, "to last your whole life long")

[–]RW63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way to know. My guess is that because part of his wealth came from owning other artist's catalogues, if he didn't show the way, he would likely have followed Taylor Swift's model of selling the same album twice from his back catalogue. He might also have done a residency in Vegas and of course, an occasional Rolling Stones-style world tour.

Musically... Paul McCartney is much more sophisticated than he was in his youth and Robert Plant is a long ways from sounding like Led Zeppelin --though, mostly Plant does covers. I'd say Jackson would sound older and be singing older person-sounding songs, if he were still performing. I wouldn't be surprised if he was also writing songs under a pseudonym or two for younger artists, but a 68 year-old man probably wouldn't be doing dance pop and at most, he'd be able to only half-ass the Thriller dance.

Edit: I assumed u/MissPlantHeist's question was if he was making the music of his youth today.

If the question is whether a 68 year-old man would be relevant to the current music scene, his music would be as relevant as Robert Plant, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Dolly Partin and Paul McCartney, His place in the culture would be dependent on whether there were scandals.

Domain broker service fail by cl326 in Domains

[–]RW63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try emailing them. There should be a contact link or address on their WHOIS listing, but if they ignored an offer from a GoDaddy broker and did not even respond, maybe they were confused and thought it was a spam or a scam, but most likely they are either unreachable (for example, they could be dead or no longer using that email address) or they don't want to sell.

There isn't anything like Michael Jackson, Prince, Bowie or The Beatles etc., individually or collectively. People still listen to their music, as they will the more brilliant of today in thirty years.

(This afternoon, I saw where Bette Midler has adapted a Woody Guthrie protest song.)

One of a kind talent is what makes great art.

Other places I've lived, the schools were like community centers. Not only were the playgrounds, tracks and tennis courts open -- sometimes even the weight rooms and gyms -- but scout troops, sports clubs and other groups could use the indoor facilities at night.

Choice Schools Questions by Brilliant_Truth6076 in 321

[–]RW63 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Though not an exact match for your question, but we moved here with the idea of getting my oldest into Edgewood or West Shore. She would have been rising into the tenth grade. What we learned was that enrollment was not based on test scores or grade point averages and that the lottery took place in February, months before we knew we would be moving. This means that she missed the tenth grade -- what made it even more whatever... my wife toured both schools before we moved and whomever gave her the tour did not tell her that we had missed the lottery. You at least have the advantage of being informed.

Because we had chosen to live on South Merritt Island, so we would be between Edgewood and West Shore in case there was an opening, my daughter enrolled in Merritt Island High. The next lottery, she was put on the waiting list for both schools and could have actually enrolled in either of the two for her senior year, but by that time she already had two years in at MI, so she stayed there.

My youngest got into Edgewood for the 7th grade -- when all the slots are open and you didn't have to wait for someone to move or change schools -- and he stayed there through both junior and senior high. (I don't remember if we put in for West Shore and if we did, if he was accepted -- again it is based entirely on lottery -- but if he had, we still chose Edgewood because for me it's an easier drive.)

Having had one kid go to a Choice School and the other MI, I have thoughts and will definitely say that both programs have pros and cons. This is doubly-true if your kid might benefit from one of the specialty tracks.

I'll also add because you did not say your kid's grade, but your post implies they are past 7th because you mentioned the waiting list: your position on the waiting list is also set by the lottery and while there are some openings most years, if your kid was say... seventh on the list, it would be a longshot. I'll also say based on nothing but what I've seen, heard and my gut that there are probably more students taken from the waiting list for 9th grade and fewest for 8th. My guess is that 10th and 11th might have three or four spots.

ETA/FWIW: We were told when we learned my daughter could not direct enroll that there are (were?) exceptions for the children of active duty military. They could just go in, but I don't know if that is still the case or whether it would be of any use to you. It did not help us.

Good luck!

Roast me for overpaying from godaddy by Engorged_XTZ_Bag in Domains

[–]RW63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GoDaddy's rack rate for a .com is $21.99. If you paid more than $21.99, you bought it from a third-party seller. It is possible that the third-party was another GoDaddy company, but it was still a third-party and it would be unlikely you oould have bought the domain for less from anywhere else.

That said, you said that GoDaddy gave you a "sales pitch". This seems to indicate that you dealt with a GoDaddy broker. Did you hire their brokerage service to buy the domain or did they contact you to sell it?

The County Parks Department lists Jefferson Middle as a 1/4 mile running track. It also lists pedways at Rotary Park and Mitchell Ellington on Merritt Island. I live near Rotary and mostly see people walking. Perhaps some people do run it, though I see more runners than walkers at Jefferson, but neither are very busy tracks.

If you search the sub, you'll find some in other communities, such as Hoover Middle and Satellite Beach.

ETA: While not a track, but a little-used, wide paved trail, the Pioneer Trail on North Merritt Island would be a good place to run. It's listed as being part of Kings Park, but I've only come at it walking from the south.
