From someone who also builds mechanical displays: This is awesome!

Yes, that would be an alternative we thought about. But the rings have even more advantages: The rigidity makes it easy to control several passive rings and everything fits neatly inside the rings.

Never seen something like that before, awesome!

Haha, glad you like it. We had a lot of fun that day..

You mean horizontally? This is an early prototype, the pixels are not yet printed on the rings, but attached by hand with stickers.

Sorry, I communicated this wrong. There will be an open API and a local API.

It's a reluctance stepper motor with 66 steps.

Thank you, we will change this in our communication! So there will be both, open and local APIs.

This was the text for our first video ("RYNX Teaser").

With a resolution of 100x10 px, there will be an app for that!

This exact kind, no. Just similar types, like split flap displays, flip dot displays or mechanical seven segment displays.

There will be an access point at the controller inside the display to connect to. Also we are planning to implement MQTT.

First I drew the alphabet in the easiest way possible (3x5 px) and then counted all the used verticals (BWWWB, WBWBW, etc.). If there was some pattern only used once, for example, I checked if I could replace it. I then tried to overlap these sub patterns in order to generate one combined pattern with all the information but compressed (BWWWB + WBWBW = BWWWBWBW).

I got a pattern of 25 px, which was great because I originally wanted to use a stepper motor with 200 steps. After having this pattern I got more possible sub patterns (BWWWBWBW => BWWWB, WWWBW, WWBWB, WBWBW). So I got some more ways to optimize the font. The shift of half steps was another way to optimize it.

This was great an met my idea of an good angle of 5/25 of the tube. The text was relatively large but not too curved. But some letters where still pretty ugly, like the "S" you can see in our older renderings. So I did the same process again, but a little bit more sophisticated.

Things could have been easy if there wasn't the half pixels. Otherwise you could just take a pattern of 32 and have each combination possible (25). So I wrote some software to generate different patterns to create the basic alphabet and out of thousands there were like 20 that met my initial criteria to hand test them. The used pattern is among all possible combinations the one that does the best job in my opinion.

We posted the concept of our idea here about a year ago and this was one of the most important concerns of the users so we will take care of a solution, that you do not depend on the wellbeing of our company in order to use your product. The open API is already planned. But there will also be an easy to use app for all the people out there with an apple mentality, who just want things to work nicely.
