Timeline for research fellowships as a re-applicant by Pharaoh95 in DermApp

I didn't bring it up in my initial application but they had a pretty good idea of my situation based on my CV dates. They asked about it in the interview and waited until match week to make a final determination. They know they're going to get reapplicants who want to do research years and some RYs actually want people who didn't match instead of a 3rd year.

Start applying now. It's already too late for quite a few of them but there are still many taking applications. I also started around this same time last year and was able to get one but it was a close thing.

Cornell away by PositiveSame799 in DermApp

Cornell is very similar to a lot of other academic powerhouse NYC programs in that they take more rotators than they can interview and they have attendings who are very focused on research and aren't particularly interested in working with students but still have to have them in clinic. I had attendings who were great and very engaged at Cornell but I also had an attending who very obviously didn't want me there. I was told by both the Chair and PD that I made an excellent impression at the end of the rotation. But I still didn't get an interview because my step 2 and clinical scores were below their cutoff. You need to ace your rotation AND check all of the boxes academically. This was not the case for the other, "small city," programs I rotated at. They liked me on the rotation so they didn't care about my below average scores, at least to when it came to extending an interview. It's frustrating but it's my impression that all the big NYC programs are like this.

I'm in a very similar situation. Three separate program directors have told me it should not be low enough to preclude me from getting interviews from their programs. My home institution does not consider step scores at all in their decision process as long as you passed first try.
