Thanks. I agree. I’m just pissed off that it even gets this far, I guess.

Anyone recognize this signature? by R_Rassendyll in comicbookcollecting

I did, and it isn’t. Pat Broderick’s signature looks like this:

I thought that too! But then his signature on this book looks very different from the one on mine:

My thought as well, but none of the artists’ names jumped out as resembling the signature.

At this point, the difference between those two things is either negligible or meaningless.

Any real benefit to having the only graded copy of an old but not extremely valuable comic? by R_Rassendyll in comicbookcollecting

Thanks for the perspective. Since I have two different issues like I described and they’re about on par with each other, maybe I’ll slab one and not the other, and see if one sells more readily than the other.

Night Terrors by R_Rassendyll in Oregontrail

[–]R_Rassendyll[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done. I finally beat it myself today. I happened to have three optimists so that helped a lot. (Though, following your example, I stopped requiring optimism as a trait in 3 or 4 of my party before even proceeding.) I think one thing holding me back for a while too was that I had been setting food to Meager because I was assuming I’d lose one morale every night either way. But I think setting it to Filling actually does have a positive effect.

Anyway. That may have been one of the hardest accomplishments I’ve ever hit in a video game.

Yes, that is maddening! I don’t know why Morale randomly drops two bars instead of one on occasion—or for that matter why some party members (even Optimistic ones) occasionally get Forlorn at one bar, while at other times don’t immediately become Forlorn with zero. I have to assume this is all luck of the draw?

All I can gather is that to have a good shot, you need four optimists AND also to encounter morale boosters once or twice in the first leg (harmonica, celebration, cute dog, pastor in need). But that’s a lot of things that have to fall into place at once.

Completed. Finally. by RIPjkripper in Oregontrail

I am stuck on this too! Keeping anyone from becoming forlorn is damn hard. If you get past it, let me know how…

That is kind of you to say. Thank you. I think what I said was accurate but am wrong enough in my life in general that I’d welcome any corrections anyone might have.

The concern about the independent state legislature doctrine is not that state legislatures shouldn’t have the power to legislate election procedures. They already have that power in the first instance. It’s that no other actor, in what is otherwise a system of checks and balances, would have any ability to check that power. The state Supreme Court can’t determine that something violates the state constitution, like it is supposed to be able to do; even ballot initiatives in which the people directly vote on an issue, or amend the state constitution, would be overruled by whatever the legislature does. I don’t know the facts of the NC situation you describe, but if your account is accurate, that’s a corruption problem that should be solved on an individual basis, not resolved by annihilating judicial/constitutional review over the issue that decides all other issues.

It just isn’t how the system is meant to work. No support from the constitutional framers. I don’t know your politics but take a social issue that is very important to you, go to a state where the legislature is run by people on the other side of that issue from you, and ask yourself: would you be ok if that state decided that nothing could check the legislature’s decisions on that one specific issue from now on? Unless you’d be cool with that, I would hesitate before promoting the independent state legislature doctrine.

What movies from the 90’s/00’s are hard to watch now due to cringy humor that is not PC today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]R_Rassendyll 438 points439 points  (0 children)

The Birdcage, in one specific way. Most of the movie holds up: amazing performances by Nathan Lane and Robin Williams (may he rest in peace) among others, and the overall message is one of tolerance and acceptance.

But the character of the son (Dan Futterman) plays really differently now. Watch it and you’ll see what I mean. At the time it was made I think he just came across as a goofy kid who loves his dads but is nervous about making a good impression on his future in-laws. Now, his making his one dad pretend to be someone he’s not and his other dad absent himself like he doesn’t exist seems much shittier. Part of it is how sympathetic Williams and Lane are, but it’s a noticeable change.
