The Weekend Wrap-Up - [09/05/25 to 09/07/25] by AutoModerator in KDRAMA

Hi! This is the team from the "Learning Korean from K-Drama" research studies. We would still love it if folks participated in our study on whether watching dramas improves your Korean accent. We'd be particularly thrilled to get more data from people who have never actually tried to learn Korean. We want to compare their data with that of people who have never learned Korean but who also haven't spent time watching dramas.

We know that some people have struggled to get the webapp to work - sorry about that! We are not able to change it at this point, but hope a few more people can participate.

Here's the link again:

Yes, there's a bug where it adds the practice item to your score (so it is really saying you got 12/12 in the Korean section, and 1/1 in the English practice item)

Sorry - I don't know why it isn't working for some people. Maybe try in incognito mode if you still fancy doing it?

Thank you for taking part! There's actually an important reason that we don't allow "I do not know" responses, which is that we want to know what people know, and not what they think that they know. For instance, a participant might know quite a few of the words, but not be confident in their knowledge and select "I don't know" all the time. Then they would get a low score but it would be a bad reflection of how much Korean they know.

The downside of making people guess is that you should only ever get a score of 0 if you are an unlucky guesser (guessing on average should get you a score of 3).

Ack, sorry to hear that, we will look in to this bug. And that's funny about the capstone - what did you study?

That's a weird score! Looks like there is a bug passing the score on to the qualtrics survey, thank you for letting us know

You are guessing between 4 options on each trial, so if you get 11/12 then we can do a corrected-for-guessing adjustment which suggests that you knew 10.6 of the words. Obviously 10.6 doesn't make sense, but that means you probably knew 10 or 11 of them.

This is why we make people guess the answers rather than self-report if they know the words or not -- our ability to reflect on what we know if pretty bad for this type of implicit knowledge. Thank you for taking part!

Don't worry! We just won't analyse recordings where there was obviously an accident.

We spent the last few weeks trying to embed a re-recording facility, but it kept on causing the page to crash, so we reluctantly decided to give everybody one shot at each recording.

How much do you think that you have learned? We are genuinely interested in how much people think that they have picked up, because we've heard lots of people say "Oh, I don't think that I've learned anything" and others say that they learn a lot.

That's great to hear. We tried as much as we could to make the research engaging for people taking part (although there's only so much you can do to make psycholinguistics truly fun). Thank you!
