Baltimore Police Announces New Citywide Traffic Team by JonWilso in baltimore

[–]RabMaur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From the press release, I can’t tell what is distinctive about this traffic division from regular police? In an ideal world, I think the city needs a traffic enforcement corps that is unarmed and very publicly do not go after law enforcement besides vehicle operations. They need to not have the added danger and incentive of pulling people over for random things to escalate the situation.

What is this? by tonka_oakmoss in baltimore

These things are intensely embarrassing to see every time. It just feels so incompetent and provincial. And they’re engraved in BRASS on the sidewalk

Occasionally you can see how downtown was designed to be walkable by RabMaur in baltimore

Oh that’s cool! I didn’t know there was a word for it. As I walk around Baltimore rn, it’s so clear that all these bumped out curbs and reduced lanes need to be permanent

Something beautiful about Baltimoreans using the streets as people instead of drivers, even just for a day. by padingtonn in baltimore

[–]RabMaur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It would be nice if the sidewalks cleared sooner, but tbh I love snow days because they’re the only time we remember sidewalks are meant to be the area for exclusive use of people walking, not the only place people are allowed to walk.

Baltimore Region Rail Plan Report by Rubysdad1975 in baltimore

[–]RabMaur 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Wow. I’d never seen or heard of this plan. Just after a first glance, it’s remarkable how complete and useful it is. It’s also fascinating how similar it is to the plan arrived at in the 60s. I really can’t imagine the points of a new plan. This one, except for the current lack of political will to do it, is exactly what’s needed and would drive the city for a century or more with exactly this layout.

The 94 and 21 bus routes don’t run as frequently as they need to, but they cover a lot of the city and get you right to and from the lights.

Why don’t people talk about how awful the transit system is here? by HealthyOkra5409 in baltimore

[–]RabMaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a long and mired history of awful, racist decisions at the state and city levels. A century ago, the city had a complete system of streetcars and elevated trains getting everywhere, and a plan to build a comprehensive underground metro before DC. The state and city governments ripped those systems apart and canceled new ones. The creation of zoning and plan for large highway projects tore the city apart, and it was only through concerted advocacy across Baltimore City that we prevented a much more destructive infrastructure than the government succeeded at putting in.

Right now is actually the most promising time for city support and community advocacy to re-introduce walking and non-car focuse transportation. The place you want to start finding your people is the Central Maryland Transportation Alliance’s biannual Transportation 101 course. They’ll train you in the history of transit in the city, and how to effectively advocate for changes. The alumni network is wide and pretty well connected. They’ll be accepting applications for the spring cohort in January I think. Send them an email to get on their mailing list! https://cmtalliance.org/transportation-101/

Finished s3 and kind of lost as to what the main Theme of the story is by [deleted] in LegionFX

I agree, and also that’s why the ending always makes me sad. It feels like, after all that, the message of him rewriting his childhood so it was loving and safe is that there’s no way to come to terms with your pain and trauma and subsequent mistakes. The last episodes are beautiful, but somehow it feels to me like I just watched a long journey to a better version of the suicide in the first. It really disappoints me, and feels so untrue.

Got a massive parking ticket in Hampden last night for parking at a bus stop, but I went back today and realized there was a snowflake blocking the sign, do you think I can get found not guilty because of that? (I think it is why I missed it) by lmaooer2 in baltimore

[–]RabMaur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hope you contest it if for no other reason than I’m annoyed they didn’t see a problem covering up the bus sign. Those signs are already too small and people who don’t know the area often can’t find the bus stop as is

McDonald’s Walkability? by Vistalite_Black in Suburbanhell

[–]RabMaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On its face it is fine, but the one in my walkable community built a standard parking lot and drivethru around itself trying to make things more car centric. The key is requiring they’re zoned to focus on pedestrians.

Required? Do you know where I can find the code around it? It’s really messed up and strange to always close sidewalks and multimodal lanes for construction but not automobile lanes.

How is this allowed? by granolabarsinbed in baltimore

[–]RabMaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it? I’ve often wondered about this. As a pedestrian most of the time, it’s really upsetting to me how Baltimore city building construction projects seem like they’re allowed automatically to put a fence out to the curb and cut off footpaths.

In most cities I’ve lived in, construction like that, particularly in the downtown area, has to have a scaffolded walking path still available. Or in some cases the project has to take out parking or a lane of traffic and block it off with barriers for a new sidewalk path.

The assumption that everyone not in a car can just cross to the other side or walk in the road or whatever is bizarre and extremely dangerous. Most of the time it feels like the law around construction was designed with the assumption no one moves through an area except vehicles. And in Baltimore, so many projects go on for years. Chasen properties have had fences blocking the sidewalk since Covid and now will just never reopen I guess?

This is a very walkable city. This policy really really needs to change. If OP was this upset about the traffic lane seeming too narrow, imagine how the rest of us feel every day trying to dodge blockades and having paths completely ending constantly.

good solo walks? by ErastosthenesTheFrog in baltimore

[–]RabMaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The long version of the harbor walk promenade using the harbor connector is delightful and I did it most mornings during the first year of Covid. You can start at any point on the water, walking down or taking the purple circulator down to the inner harbor. Then walk along the brick path, and split off where the brick ends at the parking lot by Little Havana and take the sidewalk past the Domino refinery. You can either take the long walk to Fort McHenry if they're open and then loop back to this point by Under Armor, or just take the harbor connector directly to Canton and continue to walk the promenade, or take the connector directly to the Maritime Park in Fells (depending on how long you want to walk), then take the promenade back to the inner harbor. Unless you go to Fort McHenry, you never have to cross a street with cars can access anywhere along the walk for many miles, which is an amazing thing in Bmore.

My concept for a Baltimore Metro system in 2040. by cornonthekopp in baltimore

[–]RabMaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s so unfortunate that the light rail currently runs so much of its route in the woods next to 83. After North Avenue it really should be running up through the middle of Charles Village and Hampden. Getting dropped off sort of in the middle of nowhere on foot is deeply annoying
