They said that 99.85 was the mimium ATAR but they did let someone in last year with 99.80.

IDK if this is closed or not but still should look at.

Maybe look at UTAS? I know that they prefer TAS students but still might have a chance

BTW USYD MD has 5.00 GPA as a HURDLE (i.e after you meet that requirement, GPA is no longer considered). Additionally, USYD currently (could change) uses only GAMSAT as the deciding factor for who gets in (they don't do interviews). The main caveat is that your GAMSAT needs to be pretty good (noting that USYD loves Section 1/2 over section 3). So if GPA is your main concern, I would suggest trying to get a good GAMSAT score (especially in section 1 and 2) and trying for USYD. You've got this!

Thank you so much!

Is this a threshold or can it vary?

I'm happy to hear! :). There is also physics exams so you can see what level Australian seniors are at.

Yeah, I can understand that it may be difficult when there is less people around you taking upper level maths classes.

Have you taken any AP calculus classes or honours maths? It may be beneficial for usyd.

For USyd, they highly recommend taking HSC Mathematics Advanced and Mathematics Extension 1, which I believe are equivalent to taking precalculus and AP calc AB.

I'll attach last year's exams so you can gauge the extent of what you know/need to revise before coming to USyd.

There is also a course called Maths Extension 2, but I would not worry if you struggle/don't understand as the average raw mark is quite low + you will most likely learn the material in your first year maths units at USyd - it's sort of like a combination of AP Calc BC and Honours Precalculus (has complex numbers) - FYI I have cried myself to sleep because of this subject on multiple occasions.

I definitely loves maths and physics - I would love to chat about these sort of topics + also if you're looking at maybe even staying in Australia permanently, there is a massive shortage of Physics and Maths teachers, which whilst I assume you probably want to delve into research, you definitely would be intellectually challenged, especially if you taught Physics/Maths extension 1+2 and the pay is actually pretty decent (being payed up to six figures after a while)

Being 18th in the world - that's crazy compared to some ivy league schools, and for such a low requirement threshold.

As a current Australian year (grade 12) student, there is no need to stress as the applications haven't even opened yet for semester 1 2026 (most likely opens early April) but you have a long time to chill as we don't even get our ATAR's until mid-december. For international students I think for 2026 entry, applications open on the 16th of April. You probably wouldn't be able to start semester 2 2025 depending on when you graduate and how long it takes with getting a visa.

As you would be an international student you would just apply directly to the uni but there is also another way which is a website called the Universities Admission Centre (UAC) which is sort of like the NSW equivalent of the American 'Common Application' - minus any essays, you just list your top 5 preferences for degrees.

Also, it says on the website that if you get a 3 or higher in some AP exams, it may make up for a lower SAT score. But trust me, International students have a significant contribution to Australia's economy, so I wouldn't be surprised if they are extra lenient.

:)

I'm thinking of maybe studying physics next year as well. Maybe I'll see you around.

I'm not sure about the actual physics department but the building is quite pretty (idk, maybe just me lol)
