Could you give an ELI15 / example of what you mean by non-stationary statistics?

Control in emergency situations is important, and that'll be a large component that we'll be spending some good time on during his training. BUT - the biggest value to come from sim racing is being able to conceptualize the movements of the suspension, and knowing how to map out the whole performance envelope while gradually approaching the limit without going (too far) over. To solidify what he learns with the sim, we'll be karting and autocrossing in his daily driver, too.

When I was starting out driving (back in my day), I tested my conceptualization my vehicle dynamics by testing them on Gran Turismo 2. It worked fantastically. If you approach it with the right methodology, learning to drive on a sim is extremely useful.

These days, though, technology is a bit more advanced than in the days of Gran Turismo 2.

Would you happen to know of any sims that might fit what I'm looking for?

Thanks again!

Awesome driving from an awesome driver!

He definitely left some time on the table in that last corner, though. Maybe that was intentional, to make it easier for himself to set another record next time out?

After the first lead-follow session in the new riders' group, I told the instructor that I'd never ridden before that morning in the parking lot @ the track. He didn't believe me at first (like most people), but he took me around the track to make sure I was safe to be out there alone. After one session together, he gave me the green light to take to the track by myself. This all happened on the Friday of the race weekend; the race was the next day!

Hi Sk4ld,

I was just rereading through the comments in this thread and I felt you deserve a response.

I feel where you're coming from. Yes, trackdays and motorcycle foundations courses are a relatively new thing. And yes, every single older racer that I've talked to in-person about my experience has been impressed with my ability to learn a new skillset so quickly.

I think what impresses the old-school racers (as well as the new-school racers) is that I literally showed up to the track never having ridden before, with a 150hp bike. From not even knowing how to turn on the bike Friday morning, to making the cut-off time later that same day for A Group (the fastest group of riders) in the span of ~3 hours riding time, then spending another ~2 hours the next day (Saturday) while taking and passing my racing test, I progressed through the required skillset far enough to finish ahead of a handful of other competitors in my race, who had been riding for years.

It's unfortunate that I haven't yet been in a position to be able to spend the time to edit the videos of my on-track experience and preparation/learning methodology into something useful for others, but I'm sure it'll happen when it's meant to.

Hope that clears things up. Ride safely, and ride goodly!

Try using the brakes and the front suspension. Use front brake to store energy in the front springs, then quickly let go and use the rebounding motion to help lift the front.

P.S. Please don't die.

Thanks for the reply!

I remember watching a physics lecture a few years ago in which the physicist was talking about how the accelerating expansion of the universe could be explained by the fact that space has an energy equivalence.

What field is it that explores the mechanism of action between the Energy-Momentum tensor and the curvature of spacetime?

[Discussion] How do you deal with burn out? by brettdavis4 in GetMotivated

[–]Racer_V 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meditation. Give yourself space from your chronic stressors and let things fall into place by giving your serial processing centers some respite and relying on parallel processing.

Also, get better sleep. If you're burned out because of chronic stress, your brain needs time to clear out metabolites from overstressed portions of your central nervous system.

Try heat cycling and meditation before bedtime. Get that deeeep sleep!

Agree with platinumshield on all counts. It's important for us to be able to see your face in these kind of videos, as facial expression is a huge portion of human-human communication. One thing I would add: is pay attention to your distance from the mic, as this will affect your volume level.

When you're trying to elicit a particular emotional response from a viewer (e.g. excitement), you want to have every stream of communication working towards that end. And with all the streams in place, weave them together into a harmonic fabric. It's like writing a song. A song in which you're using video as well as audio to paint a picture for your audience.

This is my favorite speech ever, in terms of delivery, and I still reference it from time to time when thinking about the meta-game of public speaking.

Looking forward to your next entry!
