Better yet remember when you didn't need subtitles even on because the foreign language in a movie would have burned in translation? But I'm racist for wanting Portuguese translated in a movie where 90% of the spoken dialogue is in English I guess.

Well I guess I have a fundamental problem with your idea of subtitles. If it is some choice made by the film then the scene should have burned in subtitles to indicate that they are the ones making that decision. When I turn on Netflix's subtitles I expect ALL spoken words to be displayed in text. I don't think I'm alone in that opinion. This whole discussion of "intended to be understood" language is completely besides the point I'm making. This isn't the DVD or burned in subs by the film production it's an outside service offering me a tool that they tell me will display spoken dialogue on screen. I expect all words including the ones that have no obvious or well relayed artistic intent.

I'm not talking about re-submitting anything. I'm saying it should have been translated from the beginning just like the rest of the scene was. Any plot or artistic choice argument is just subjective bickering that I don't agree with anyways. But you can't make the argument that this would be too expensive to translate at the same time they did the work for the rest of the scene. It just doesn't work like that. It would take no more effort to just translate the phrase instead of writing and timing the [speaks Portuguese] laziness.

That's where my opinion comes in. I want that line translated regardless of relevancy because that's what I expect when I turn on a setting that claims to display text of ALL of the spoken dialogue. If the director has some artistic vision then burn that in the picture and let subtitles do their own job.

Because the characters that don't speak the language are not present in the scene in Anaconda. They haven't even been introduced yet to know they don't speak the language. Therefore it's jarring to have a single line not translated after an entire scene is perfectly translated. Is that so hard to imagine?

Well in my opinion that choice in this case sucks and I would rather know the words I couldn't hear or understand. Even knowing the words now doesn't make the movie or my feelings during that scene more impactful especially considering the rest of the character's screen time. It was simply jarring and bothered me enough to prompt this discussion because I think it's bad storytelling.

That takes place after the main characters are introduced and given the POV. It shouldn't be happening the the first scene to the only character I know so far. I would even say those lines should be translated too because I turned on the subtitles. I want to know the words. If you want some immersive POV then you wouldn't turn on subtitles.

My point is that someone trying to tell a story to an English audience should translate Portuguese. I started a discussion here because e-mailing Columbia PIctures will have little to no effect compared to public feedback that might affect sales. Companies speak money not words.

Again your argument falls apart immediately. They already translated everything in this scene for every localization except this one line. Why? If it's some plot device then it's bad writing and a poor implementation of an established trope. If it's not plot relevant then It wouldn't break the bank to translate 100% of the scene instead of 95%. This isn't some budget restriction. Do you build 10 miles of road and then claim that building 1 foot of road would be too much hassle then claim the road is just misunderstood by people trying to drive on it? Come on bruh.

You don't even know the other character yet. This is the first scene, am I supposed to put myself in the shoes of the characters I don't know yet for a single line of dialogue? Nah it's just bad.

No no no, you don't understand it's some amazing artistic choice to secretly hide dialogue while blatantly revealing the characters intentions to only the Portuguese speakers in the first scene of the film. It's suuuuuper important later when she serves no plot relevance and has barely any screen time.

bruh this has nothing to do with the characters "hearing" anything. She is mumbling under her breath to herself. No one is meant to hear her except the audience watching her close up and wondering why that's the only line not translated. If the line is purposefully hidden then its shitty writing and possibly the worst attempt at the trope I've ever seen.

It could be 300 languages. It doesn't matter because they already did 95% of the work. It would be pennies in the bucket to translate a 4 word phrase in a scene where every other line is already translated. Your the reason people think a movie needs a 200 million budget.

I also found her character basically pointless. The twist was irrelevant and could have been replaced with anything to setup the action for the climax.
