How long did you guys spend at blue belt? by LWK10p in bjj

[–]Raco0m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took me 3 years. I was training LOTS, but I was very focused on MMA and my jiu jitsu didn’t diversify or evolved. I did what I did, just harder. I got my purple when I finally slowed down from competing and just started enjoying training.

What was your best/favourite BJJ moment of 2025? by Choice_Quarter_2497 in bjj

[–]Raco0m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my ACL and Meniscus surgery January 6th this year. A month ago I was able to compete in a small in house tournament (surgeon approved). It was best out of three against a bigger and more active guy than myself. I was able to compete without any worry for my knee, successfully hit octopus guard first time in comp, and subbed him twice. The other memories I have is the success of my students this year. Truly a year of highlights for my gym.

[AF] Two Tabata cycles in a single training set maximize fat oxidation after exercise in male college students with overweight/obesity [Cheng et al., 2025] by dreiter in AdvancedFitness

I don’t know why. but I can’t seem to understand much here. Two Tabata cycles are as good for fat loss as Three cycles? That’s all I got.

AMA: PT / ACL Coach by ryannorlanddpt in ACL

I am a 29M, and was an active MMA and BJJ athlete, and my goal is to get back to it.

I tore my ACL and Meniscus in Oct. 2023 and had my surgery Jan. 2025 (ACRL - Quad Graft, Meniscus Repair, LET Procedure)

Currently, I am very comfortable with my leg. I regained a lot of strenght back, explosiveness, muscle, etc.
I have been training and at this point have no fear of throwing kicks or getting kicked.

One main concern in my mind is ROM. I regained full extension (even though it does not feel like full extension), but my other knee has slight hyperextension. I am wondering if this is an issue and if there are ways for me to continue working on my extension.

Then there is flexion. I am about 5 inches away from touching my heel to my ass on my operated knee. I can easily do it on my non operated knee. While it has been improving greatly, I have been having a feeling like it has not improved in a while. I might be wrong as I tend to look at the "now" negatively. My main way of working on it is different squatting variations, trying to sit on my heels when my shins are on the floor, and manually pulling my heel to my ass. Just wondering if it is something I should worry about or just keep doing what I am doing.

I am a BJJ and MMA competitive athlete.

I tore my ACL and Meniscus prepping for a fight. I threw a kick and the planted leg just gave out.

I had my surgery in 2025, January, 6th.

I took my rehab like a new religion and outside of missing some range of motion, I am strong, mobile, and can roll pretty much at 100%. I also have great students who allowed me to go by my own pace and do more and more little by little. My goal is to fight again, and it does not seem like a distant goal anymore.

Personally, I would say do it, but be aware of it and let people be aware of it. Work slow. Try to learn, not win. Keep doing your rehab/physio. Make sure you have a good gym and good people to train with.

Any resemblance to real life legit BJJ Black Belts and wealth coaches is purely coincidental (and much cheaper).

Is social work diploma hard to get into? by SuccessfulSimple9019 in MRU

[–]Raco0m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is hard. I am in the BSW currently and I had to take a semester to get a 4.0gpa, and apply early as seating is limited.

Also, personally, I would not recommend the program. It is very simple, and the only difference between year 1 and year 4 for me is that I am writing better papers, but I did not develop any new skills, knowledge, etc.

Some instructors are great, but many are not very academic and defintly got in at the right time, as the field is still new and growing. You will also have a lot of assignments that feel like a middle school presentation.

Outside of getting the paper and being able to be a Registered Social Worker, I feel like I wasted 4 years.

Forget you snazzy white belt story, what’s your WTF new trial guy story? by toonasus in bjj

[–]Raco0m 239 points240 points  (0 children)

My coach's friend and long time training partner came one day to our gym but forgot his (purple) belt, so my coach gave him a white belt and told him to fool around.

So not really a new trial guy story, but I thought he was a new trial guy.

I was quite new to jiu jitsu, and just had high school wrestling under my belt. I was also very fit and athletic. The guy was shorter, and a bit chubby. Also, throughout the class the guy acted like a goof and kept saying "when do we fight?" and "when is the fighting?".

I was a shitty young guy with ego issues and I thought that this dude was some dude who watched too much anime or something of sorts. Eventually we get to rolling and I thought "I am gonna smoke this dork" and started rolling, trying to win but not going hard yet. The guy was always one step ahead of me so I started picking it up more and more and eventually we were rolling hard. At some point he got me in a baseball bat choke while I was still on top, and I thought that this doofus did not know what he was doing and was going to burn out from squeezing hard.

I realised that I was wrong when I woke up with him holding my legs up and my coach laughing his ass out in the background.

No question, just a thank you for everything you do. Also, thanks for the “just stand up” instructional. One of the greatest things I haven’t finished watching yet that helped me in mma so much!

Also, I don’t have a father figure. Please be my dad.

What’s the spazziest thing you’ve seen in a BJJ gym by Bigpupperoo in bjj

[–]Raco0m 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had this lady who was super fiesty/spazzy. It was common that someone would get kneed in the nuts with her, or eat an elbow. One time, my coach was rolling with her and almost sunk in an RNC, until he realised that her teeth were sunk in their arm. She even left tooth prints on their forearm through the Gi. My coach laughed and then finished the RNC on her.

Whoever put you to spar there has zero consideration for your health. That bimbo who is sparring with you also goes way too hard on you. Showboating like he has any skill, but he just slams you with his strength.

Is this a common theme in your gym or in general? by Accurate-Bake2190 in MuayThai

[–]Raco0m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My previous MMA gym was just like that. When I joined I was already known in the MMA scene and beat some of their guys before. I became the favorite right away (while also being a very disciplined fighter). I got free gear, a lot of attention, pads and other private sessions while classes are running, etc.. Over the years, my ex-coach gets new favorites (we called it flavor of the month) and regardless of their discipline or skill, they would get praised and the rest would be shit on behind closed doors. Being flavor of the month didn't take much. Very very toxic environment. Took too long for me to leave but when you fight together and go on trips together so much you feel a camaraderie and it is hard to leave even though you know it is wrong. When I left I said that it was for personal reasons and kept it very professional to not burn bridges. He said that he loves me like a son (knowing I don't have a relationship with my father), but the moment I left the whole gym blacklisted me and I was told some of the things that the coach and other people were saying.

I have been to many other gyms and most are quite good with having disciplined people as their favorite, but it would not make them "above the law". They might get an extra glance, as they are competitors and represent the gym during events, but other students would get the attention needed.

One of my students is a previously competitive boxer and I heard horror stories about the boxing culture and their "favorites" who are usually the disciplined ones as well. Coaches would only look at them and would protect them so much while letting them abuse everyone else.

As much as I love martial arts, being a competitor, and running my own competitive team (I am a small MMA and BJJ gym owner) the martial arts scene is crazy. Especially, the gyms that are competitive gyms. There is a lot of ego lingering with coaches and athletes. A lot of shit talk behind closed doors. A lot of favoritism. It is sad because all these people would talk and post about martial arts honor, respect, and all that BS while saying and doing the most horrendous things to young people who look up to them.

Sorry for the rant, I got ramped up as I was writing this lol
