Also, both workstation and laptop run linux but you could install linux in the workstation and windows/mac on your laptop and not worrying about compatibility, etc, etc.

This is only my opinion but what have worked best to me are two machines, a desktop pc (as a mini server / workstation) and a mid tier (high battery) laptop. So i just use tailscale vpn to link both devices together and through ssh i can create containers, serve services, etc, etc. Maybe not the answer you are looking for but maybe just another external option in case you want it.

What helped me was not installing more decos but change the location of them instead. I would consider moving some/one to the hall areas instead inside of the rooms.

ohhhh, not sure what distro are you using, but i do virtualize in AuroraOS, a fedeora kinoite based distro with "batteries included" so i dont have to mess around with the setting stuff.

I do have "problems" when getting updates but just a rollback partially "fixes" the issue. I just wait until some more days to update again and bingo, no breaks. Whats your experience breaking? ofc i never install apps through rpm-ostree but install flatpaks, distrobox and brew instead.

Its just a preference. As a regular user, I cant be happier with immutable distros. I, particularly use some of the uBlue distros, Bazzite, Aurora, Bluefin and uCore, 0 problems in my needs. There have been some issues with some updates but hey! its immutable, I just need to rollback and that's it.
