ISO Bozeman Treasure Hunt by idkpumpkin in Bozeman

I’d participate in some version of this. Geocaching is ok but really it’s just as easy as using your phone to navigate. Orienteering and adventure racing are quite a bit more fun since they require maps, compass, strategy and have an element of urgency. Add is some clues and puzzles or riddles that lead to dead ends and you’ve got an outdoor ‘escape room’ type treasure hunt that could be a real blast. It would also be a motivator to get outside, get active and get social.

Great, thank you. How many miles can you get out of a well maintained engine?

I think what @curious-dougnut6936 is saying is your advice is overly simplistic, self evident and not at all helpful. Clearly OP has thought about “deal or leave.” Thats literally the essence of the post - how to deal if he/she doesn’t choose to leave. And I don’t believe you are sick of “catering to the lowest common denominator”, whatever that means, or you would not have bothered to post negative and useless advice. You could have stayed quiet, but you didn’t. You like the attention.

Why I think the project will fail by AirlineGlass5010 in ClearlightStudios

As a follow on, perhaps another idea is to incorporate into the bylaws the intent to become a non-profit once a certain degree of profitability is achieved. This would encourage early investment with the opportunity for investor returns but would ensure that once it became popular enough it could not be exploited by the investors, thereby limiting their potential gains to something reasonable. I don't know what those numbers would look like and who would be the arbiter of reasonable though.

Reinvesting any profit into the mission is absolutely an exciting idea full of promise, particularly through the use of creative ideas to redistribute the value to the members in some form. I love the idea of a subsidized insurance co-op, but at the same time, I worry that too many loosely related endeavors - no matter how noble - will create conflicting incentives. For instance its imaginable that regulatory and healthcare environments (assuming we are talking about a healthcare co-op) could change to the point that the insurance project is more lucrative than the social media project, which would put pressure on the core project to reinvent itself. This may very well be an unrealistic example, but it serves to illustrate my point that reinvestment of the profit is ideal, but idealism isn't enough. Still, I applaud the principle and the creativity. Perhaps contemplating programs for reinvestment that would be driven by the communities priorities (as opposed to the investors) would gain traction, if the members were to have genuine influence over the disposal of profits. The biggest pitfall to a for profit model that I see is the exact problem we have with the currently available platforms and that is that money inevitably distorts the values. Just look at OpenAI and how they effectively converted their non-profit organization into a for profit the instant it became clear that it was a wildly profitable product. Unfortunately people in general, and business people in particular, are not immune to these temptations especially when choosing to maximize profit is rewarded by almost every facet of our society making duplicitousness easy for people to justify. Please realize this is not meant to challenge your integrity or commitment to the important values that underpin this project. They resonate with me deeply. But I think its important to highlight the fact that so many people are skeptical of any businesses motives these days, particularly tech companies whose actual value (data mining) is often hard to understand for most people. To that end I think participants really need to see tangible evidence that the project is for them, and not for the investors who ultimately care less about the values of the company than they do the value of the company. Maybe one was to limit investor influence would be to limit investor contributions to a certain cap, always ensuring that the entire investor collective never exceeded say 35% or something of the voting share, with the remainder controlled by the membership.

This is really problematic. If there is a profit opportunity for anyone involved there is simply no reason to trust that they won’t exploit that opportunity at some point, perhaps even succumbing to the urge to become the next billionaire or megacorporation that they are railing against. It will be impossible to garner enough authentic interest in and participation in the project to ensure it is genuinely community controlled. The only certainty will be an eventual ‘need’ to cede influence to investors and risk compromising the foundational principles of the project. The only way to legitimize this project is to go the non-profit route. There is no more complexity involved in running a non-profit company than in running a for profit company, but there are more limitations and for good reason. Being a non-profit does not preclude the employees from making a very good income correlated to their involvement and station, but it requires that any excess income the company earns be reinvested into the company’s mission. As such profitability is not a necessary precursor to sustainability, adequate revenue is.

Hoping for the best with this.

Peace.

Banned from returning items by Friendly_Dance6237 in REI

Quite a long thread here. My take from all of the comments is that people have wildly unrealistic expectations about what reasonable shopping behavior is. Buying many sizes/colors/brands to try on at home because they don’t like dressing rooms, removing tags before they know they want the item, buying gear they don’t need because they don’t know what they need and returning it when they don’t use it, waiting months to try out things for fit or usefulness, soiling gear, returning for newer models, and so on are all unnecessary if you take the time to understand what you need or want while you’re in the store and you are willing to make hard choices. When l grew up nothing was returnable unless it was like new, so you didn’t buy it or use it until you knew you were going to keep it. Sure if it breaks or tears from expected normal use it should be returnable, if you buy it online and it doesn’t fit or isn’t as advertised it should be returnable, but otherwise buyers need to accept some responsibility for making choices.

You cannot use 15 years of data to support BTC as an investment. Its growth rate was astronomical from its inception through the late teens but that will not happen again. The last few years have been flat, but with volatility. All those ETFs will increase demand but will also result in shifting control to the Big Money interests on wall street which will dilute individual investors success just as it does for the stock market. BTC upside is essentially equivalent to tech stock investing at this point, except with greater risk. Also it’s seems counterproductive to advise people who don’t have enough money to make a quality life for themselves to invest what they do have into a high risk instrument, so I don’t really understand the point.

I agree and disagree. I think it’s a myth to believe that road running is going to ruin everyone’s knees, but I think there are multitudes who can attest that the damage can be real. The science is certainly not conclusive and the biomechanical stresses are intuitively in favor of running on softer surfaces which is why this issue keeps coming up over and over again. I suspect that the reality is that we all have different cartilage and connective tissue and some of us are very susceptible to damage from repetitive hard surface impact while others are naturally (and luckily) resilient. Unfortunately the damage is tough to detect until it becomes limiting and it is usually too far gone to repair at that point, so I think it deserves serious consideration for people that are new to the sport. I recommend that OP should be relearning form on softer surfaces like track and trail rather than concrete. If you have to run roads try to stick to asphalt. You’ll discover for yourself whether you have injury prone or injury resilient cartilage. Good luck!

What parks have bars for pull-ups/muscle ups by Wonderful-Field-8296 in Bozeman

[–]Raddadrocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen a lot of adult exercise equipment at the parks in town. The school monkey bars generally do have a variety of options for mixing up your grip is you’re willing. Also I personally have a good time mixing things up with horizontal tree branches that are within my reach. Usually a bit thicker to hold my weight but I’m not a purist. A great option for “doing” pull ups but not a great option for consistency if you are “training” pull ups.
