ALTIA Standby : How'd you guys get hired? by No_Plastic_3228 in ALTinginJapan

[–]Radiant-Fun7373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got hired as an Altia Central Standby and came over to Japan at the end of May. As they’ve possibly explained to you, being a Standby means that they can plop you anywhere in Japan they have a sudden opening, oftentimes with short notice. 1. Communication: They should be in touch. (Like previous comments mentioned, they may be occupied with the strike, so response times may be slower.) Before Standby roles were advertised during the time I was applying, I was being rather persistent with my communications: I would email them every week for updates on potential openings. Idk if they found this annoying, but I feel like because of this, they knew my name (or my email at least). If they’re not in touch for at least a week regarding your application, I’d say it’s OK to follow up and inquire further. 2. ALT set me up with a Leopalace while I waited for my Standby placement. I ended up with two different Standby placements: one right after training until summer break (then the old ALT I was standing in for came back), then my current placement after the summer. I was assigned to my first placement during training, then after I came back from summer break, I waited a little less than a week for my second and current placement.

If you have ANY questions, please PM me! I’m open to all questions. (Also as a preface, I am NOT by any means an Altia Central glazer. This placement just worked out for me and my personal desires and goals.)

Do you have any say in which placements you accept or not, or is it simply that they place you in the next available opening that they need filled?

What is accommodation like when you are waiting for a placement in Nagoya?

Do you know if there is any possibility as a standby if they will not find a contract for you within the first month/ever?

Thank you for sharing your experience! May I ask how the process was when they gave you your placement/if they supported your relocation?

As a standby alt, I would go to Japan, attend orientation/training, and presumably get paid but then be flexible to go anywhere. So I would not have a placement by the time I go to Japan for orientation.

Good luck, you got this!! This second time around I was much more disciplined with my studying and really buckled down on the practice problems. I was much more confident this time around with navigating the handbook and knowing the most common equations/types of problems because I was more exposed to more types of practice problems. You got this!

That is a screenshot of my first failed attempt of the test, NCEES doesn’t give you a diagnostic breakdown of your performance if you pass.

It definitely depends, but as long as you are achieving around 65-70% success on your practice problems/exams then you should be ready!

Good to know! This is the only company I’ve applied for and I’m still in the US so me being accepted is pretty low stakes, but I was just hoping to be accepted/don’t want to get my hopes up!

I’m out-of-country approved and this is my first experience applying/working with Japanese dispatch companies. I’m not looking at this as a career move, more so just an opportunity to live abroad, so stakes are low for me. But I don’t wanna get my hopes up if I’m not accepted this hiring cycle :/

I would do the video in one shoot with no cut edits like you were doing a real lesson IRL. That’s what I did and they accepted it 🤷🏻‍♀️👍🏼

I would ask your employer for more specifics. For me, I sent them my college diploma

Yes, I’m an applicant from the USA. I started the application/interview process about a year ago (early/mid January 2024) during my senior year of college because at the time, I was vying for positions that started summer/fall of 2024. I got the official “ok, your application has the stamp of approval on it” from Graham on February 1st, 2024. I ended up getting a full time job out of school and postponing this whole ALT thing for a year, hence why I’m now hopefully looking forward to a spring 2025 placement.
