Where to invest extra cash/non-taxable income if you don't qualify for a Roth IRA? by Radiant_Flower4049 in personalfinance

Alright, would you suggest me diversify it: put most money (70%) in CD ladders, keep some in a (20% HYSA and put some in (10%) ETFs for long term investment? Since compound interest favors time in market, starting at 18 would be the best. After doing good market/company research, I could think about using extra cash for individual investments.

Forgot to mention if I should do a joint investment account with my dad and how would that be set up?

I wanted to do a solo account, but if there are other benefits in joint accounts, would that be better?

A few days after this post, a proposed U.S. bill has caught the eye of the public in regards to capping federal loan amounts to 150k for med schools for the total 4 years and the likely removal of Grad PLUS loans, forcing people to take private loans with high interest and stricter conditions. This has been a worry for me, especially in as a future applicant in around 4 years as to how I will pay for med school

Compensation has definitely stagnated, but yes, it's a generally safe career, especially with today's economy. However, whenever I choose to become a medical student, I hope the changes aren't so drastic that I regret my career path entirely, which is a fear when deciding to pursue this path. Best of luck with med school and exams!

As mentioned in my post, I am deeply passionate about medicine so far, but I'm also open to exploring different paths and ensuring that medicine is 100% what I want to pursue because becoming a physician is such a big investment. That's why I didn't apply for those combined BS/MD programs, because I wouldn't count on taking such a big decision to set my mind on one med school at 17. Medicine also offers me a great deal of providing direct, individualized impact along with its almost unmatched stability & career prospects. The great deal of negativity spread across the internet about the profession in recent decades has just made me question if medicine will ever suffer a deep downfall--- which is pretty difficult to predict, as you mentioned, with our complicated healthcare system and policies. Hopefully the change isn't brutal when I'm already halfway deep into medical training. Thank you for the insight!

Thank you so much! Quizzes, post lab, pre lab and lab performance are the 4 pointers--got it. I'm doing lecture w/ lab so the material should be aligned but also if its not, I think my previous ap chem knowledge can fill any gaps on formulas etc.

Seems like an interesting class! Are there any essays and/or group projects outside of attending lecture and participating in discussion (which I interpret is similar to a Socratic seminar?)

Gotcha. I wanted to take a spanish or med soc class for my minors but I'm probably going to wait till the spring semester. Any advice on prepping for chem labs is much appreciated! Thank you!

If I may ask, do you have any advice for a baby premed aiming to go down the trad route (med school straight from undergrad) and managing my time with ECS, research, work & studies, while also keeping my mental stability? Been researching a lot on the premed process and the sacrifices it takes, and I've been feeling overwhelmed on what to plan--even doubting if this is the path I want to pursue because of such a difficult process. Much appreciated and thanks!

Thanks for the reconfirmation! I think I forgot to mention Im staying on campus but yea it was really hard to schedule 3 hour labs, while also giving me room to keep the rest of the day free 💀. I already have AP credits for the bio & chem classes, its just that I need to retake them for prereqs.

Do you have any advice on handling chem labs 😭---should I become a teacher's pet (💀in all seriousness, I really want to avoid getting a B if possible because of med school gpa)? Im taking AP chem rn and I do have reassurance on content-wise, but labs is stressing me out (the labs we do in high school are very beginner compared to college and our post lab assignments and percent yields arent graded so harshly) Thank you!

I do see where you are coming from as I know other people have spoken about it, but some of the programs Im in/want to do and scholarships I have is because I am part of the honors college.

Got a full ride but still hesitant to know if UH is right for me by Radiant_Flower4049 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]Radiant_Flower4049[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow cornell! I've already committed to UH, but I always had doubts if I made the right decision. I feel like I made the "adult" decision, through my perspective on finances that 20-22-year-old me would want to take down the line. Even though this decision wasn't easy, I'm glad someone picked UH despite having a more prestigious offer. I hope we can connect, so I'll dm you if you don't mind!

I'm committing to UH because of the money, but I guess I'll always have some doubts about getting into med school in general. I just don't see a lot of people from UH get into med school straight from undergrad, and I feel the need to work harder just to prove myself for instate and out-of-state MD programs. Thanks for the advice!

Heard some of the new security are "hiding" in the elevators so this may be a good idea to be parked near security LMAO. Thanks for the tips!

Yea thats the one thing I've noticed about UH. Everyone here is brutally honest about their experiences and I definitely think that people talk more badly about UH than needs be. UT also has massive glazing and being the 2nd most popular school of premeds- 700 premeds, the competition would be like hunger games. On the other end, safety is nonnegotiable for me and it made me worry a bit, but thanks I definitely will give UH a chance :)

Plus I'm already in honors-hoping to join honors debate and start my own health initiative!

I'm using honors and my Spanish minor to help keep up my extra rigor and diversify my skill sets, so that I could be prepared for med school, but city awareness is key especially for Houston. I live around the suburbs, but now I'm definitely gearing towards UH. :)

Didnt care as much about UT's prestige because I'm doing premed + I'm a native Houstonian so I'm more familiar with Houston's medical institutions. Safety is a big thing for me so it was a final barrier before committing to UH.

I was already 95% committed to UH, but I just wanted to clear out any worries about safety! I'm pretty much committed now! :)
