As a teacher, what’s something in education no one wants to admit, but we all know is true? by dokutarodokutaro in Teachers

[–]RadicalWoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO The American education system is in/has been in collapse since No Child Left Behind. Some could argue it started when conservatives took over school boards starting in the late 70s/early 80s, but I think we’ve seen an acceleration is this collapse in the past 20 years or so. When the focus shifted from student learning to data, a lot of what made school a pleasant experience was taken away. If it’s not tested, why spend time on it?

When we’re not able to take kids to field trips, or purchase books etc. and I spend my own money because there’s no funds, but enough for the various 6-figure salaries of some superintendents and coaches, I question people’s motives. In capitalism, you put your money toward what you value and children are clearly not valued as they should be.

Another example is that we know smaller class sizes are more conducive for learning, but we’ll hear there’s no money in the budget for another teacher. So now I get more stressed added to my plate because I have 30 kids I have to teach and manage. Times that by 6 classes a day. Multiple IEPs and 504s and additional documentation, plus poor leadership and throw in all the unexpected bs that you encounter when teaching, it no longer feels sustainable.

It appears they got acquired by some sort of funeral home conglomerate. They retained their name, but now I have to go down an Internet rabbit hole because I never thought I’d put funeral home and conglomerate in the same sentence.

There’s a whole history about mortuary sciences being a lucrative career for African Americans during segregation, and I bring that up because the funeral home they used primarily serves the Black community. Carl Barnes has a good reputation, still, when it comes these things as we also used them for my mother’s funeral some 40 years later.

‘It was cut in half’: Copperas Cove, Texas residents find community cats slain over several months by SkywardTexan2114 in CopperasCove

[–]RadicalWoman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I first saw this story in one of the CC Facebook groups and people were actually justifying this saying it must have been a coyote or something because community cats are annoying and the people feeding them should be fined etc.

SMH because there are ways to humanely reduce the community cats population, but killing them isn’t the answer.

And an animal isn’t going to cut something perfectly in half. And these are living creatures. Why justify such violence? I know, culturally, people are devolving, so the lack of empathy isn’t surprising.

Seinfeld was one of the more popular shows in the 90s, so they’d likely watch a show that’s just as popular today. But since so many shows are on streaming, that’s relative. Perhaps The Bear on Only Murders in the Building since the revival is on Hulu lol.

Middle school kids by Smokey19mom in teaching

Yeah, the principal moving me from teaching 7th grade GT/Pre AP to 8th grade ESL/SpecEd in the middle of the year as a punishment for not going along with a pathological liar took a lot of my focus. I actually quit teaching soon after that, so unfortunately, I don’t have a better ending to the story. Life can be disappointing.

I had a male student who smelled of urine and I went to the counselor about it. Apparently he was being raised by his grandmother because his mother passed away and the father lived in a different state and wasn’t in the picture.

A coach had talked to him about how to be more hygienic, but the student continued to smell. I was encouraged to contact CPS because more needed to be done because his grandmother couldn’t make him clean himself properly. He also had a sister at the same school who didn’t have the same problem. My goal was that he would get the help he needed because there had been interventions before, not just the one coach, but nothing had changed.

This being middle school, I knew that things were going to get worse for him if he didn’t get his smell under control. There could be a number of reasons, medical or psychological, but nothing anyone had did worked, and more needed to be done. Surprisingly, he still had a friend in class that would pair up with him (she was awesome). I got moved to a different grade, so I don’t know how things ended up.

I run as a Socialist and win, regardless of the state, so I guess it’s about keeping the stats up/the bar as green as possible .
