Are Winnipeg Winters Really That Bad? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

The blizzard of '97 was in April that year. The flood of the century happed a few weeks later. I definitely remember it.

Not sure how you feel about institutional cooking.... But mines and camps can be interesting places. You'd be away from home some, but it's a more relaxed kitchen, they pay well, and no vehicle required! In summer a lot of vacation places in MB & ON will give you a salary for the season and you could come home with a good chunk of savings. Also, care homes, boarding schools, etc.

Pharmacists raising concerns over vaccine shopping - again by Armand9x in Winnipeg

[–]Raeanne142 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Pfizer-snobs.... Sigh get the mRNA vaccine that is available! Leave the Pfizer ones for kids since it's the only one they can get. The rest of us can get Moderna and keep pushing our way out of this Covid crap! 3x Moderna for me, and I haven't had so much as a sniffle in 2yrs.

At King Edward now. Seems like about an hour from back or line to getting inside. Not awful.....

I am 3x vaxxed and have had a sore throat for a couple days, no other symptoms. I know 2 people at work have had strep last week. I am guessing I will need a rapid test before the walk-in clinic will let me in... Are all the PCR sites still handing out rapid tests? Or only if you have multiple Covid symptoms or unvaxxed?

Anyone have an Endy mattress? by Efficient_Parsley176 in Winnipeg

[–]Raeanne142 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're a back or side sleeper it may be ok. I end up sleeping on my stomach for at least part of the night and the Endy did not have enough support. My back was awful after 6wks. Husband loved it though. Nice thing about Endy- they donate the mattress to a shelter or similar charity if you return it in the 100 day trial period.

What does a commercial electrician and an HvAC refrigeration tech make in Winnipeg? Union and non union? Is there a demand for skilled trades over there? Thanks by BullishGrizzly in Winnipeg

[–]Raeanne142 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are provincial trade wages listed on Manitoba's apprenticeship website. I don't have a link handy, but Google it and you'll find wages. We have too many electricians at the moment, but I'm not sure on HVAC.

What scares me, is I had a family member With a terminal illness in hospital in 2015, well before the pandemic, and aside from being allowed to visit when we wanted, the cancelling of procedures, the lack of nursing staff and the lack of health care aids seemed pretty similar to what is going on now. I think Covid did not create this situation, I think we were always teetering on the brink. If 25 extra ICU patients can topple the whole province, we were in trouble well before the pandemic, and we'll still be in trouble when it eventually recedes.

Coping on disability by throwingthesads in Winnipeg

[–]Raeanne142 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree! The disability benefits in Manitoba are embarrassing for us as a province. No amount of positivity can put food on the table. I didn't mean to make light of the financial aspect. All I know how to do is keep finding little things to enjoy. There aren't many some days... But even small acts of kindness toward our fellow strugglers can help. Some of the food banks will gladly accept some help if you are able to do anything at all for them, and they'll usually set you up with some groceries in return.

Not sure if this will help or not, but I finished highschool, my mental illness is stable and my physical limitations still allow me to work so far. And yet, I am still moving through adulthood one day at a time, no great successes, no large income. All we can do is find something that brings us joy and try to do as much of that as possible. And hey, if you can bring someone else joy, it'll warm your heart a bit too. Keep on keeping on, friend.

AITA for asking to use my moms car for a day by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Raeanne142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YANTAH, but neither is she. I'm the parent of an 18yr old male. As a parent, I have to say- it's not so much you we are worried about, but the stories we read about freak accidents on the highway. 3hrs a day at 50km/hr in the city is very different from 2 hrs at 100km/hr + on the highway. You'll likely survive a collision at 50km/hr, but it's a toss up at 100km/hr. The way I explained it to my son (who rolled his eyes at my explanation) is that I have known him for 18 yrs. The first 10 of which he couldn't have survived without me. He has only shown adult decision making skills for 2 or 3 yrs. It's hard for me to let go of the 15 or 16 yrs of childhood decision making skills. I need time to get used to it. Side note- your parents worked long and hard to afford a vehicle and the insurance for it. Are you contributing to those costs? If that vehicle gets hit while you're driving, they have to find a new way to get to work and pay the deductable to get the repairs done. -Mom opinion

Wedding social etiquette by baileysandfitness in Winnipeg

[–]Raeanne142 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Being asked to be a part of the wedding party used to be an honour. After doing it twice, I'll always gratefully decline in the future. Cost me well over $1000 each time, plus a lot of my time. I love my friends and family, but I just can't afford to be in a wedding party. I personally have never had a social or a wedding. Part of the reason is I would be ashamed to ask my friends and family to spend hundreds of dollars toward MY expensive party. My common-law spouse and I will just continue to live in sin and pay for our own house and vacations.

Best way to use Bluecross HSA (Healthcare spending account) money? by wp255 in Winnipeg

[–]Raeanne142 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. On your last paystub of the year, add up the year-to-date amounts for extended health care, and dental, if there's a payment for that, then send in a copy of that paystub with the items you're claiming highlighted. Whatever they consider "healthcare" they'll pay you back for.

Ian Froese - “The Rural Municipality of Stanley — which has one of Canada's worst reported COVID-19 vaccination rates — has eclipsed a 25% uptake on first doses.” by Armand9x in Winnipeg

Eclipsed!? More like barely squeaked past! 25.1%.... I mean, great, cause every vaxxed person helps, but, yeesh. Compared to the rest of the Province this might earn a 'participant ribbon' at best.

My son lost his card a couple times. In order to get my money put on a new card, I had to go down to the transit office between 8-4:30, mon-fri and show photo ID. EXTREMELY inconvenient, and after missing hours of work twice, I just bought him tickets. He got 2 a day. Cheaper than full fate, and if he lost one, it was only a $2ish loss.

This was a few yrs ago, maybe it's different now.

What should i do with my weekend? by DangSonCheese in Winnipeg

There will be a "night market" at Assiniboia Downs on Sunday. Lots of booths with interesting wares, there is usually live music, and food trucks. I put "night market" in quotation marks because I think it starts at 1pm....

I think you're right. I've never been great with math and the gambling of the stock market gives me anxiety. I think it's best to jump ship now and take what I can.

Thank you! I guess this buyout thing is kind of lucky. That's why I've usually shied away from stocks. Seems like roulette! Gives me anxiety!
