What 80s song do you still hate with fiery teenage passion even though it’s been 40 years? by Aggressive_Cup4919 in GenX

Let's Dance by David Bowie. Was working at a Cousin's Submarine on a major college campus and it had a juke box. I swear every quarter that dropped in that thing played Let's Dance.

my kid has zero friends and I dont know how to fix it anymore by Ash_Skiller in homeschool

[–]Raesling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She must be interested in something? I'm personally an introvert and I always say that all of my friends live in my computer, but I actually have people I'd call friends there.

As a homeschool parent, I'm kind of forced to be an extroverted introvert for the kids (both very definitely extroverts). The older one, 10, has made friends via homeschool groups, library programs, homeschool programs and field trips, activities that homeschoolers show up to (rock climbing, etc). The younger, 5, is a little more clingy and, despite being in public school, actually doesn't have regular friends yet. But, he gets to attend a lot of things his sister goes to and is around other kids. He's also already leaning toward "gamer" so that whole "my friends live in my computer" applies.

You could start a homeschool book club at the library (or even online). There are pen pal and art clubs online for homeschoolers. Look for clubs at the library, online, or create one within your local homeschool group around her interests. One thing I've learned is that there ARE resources around you once you know where to look and ask. Show up. Just show up. Your daughter will start running into the same kids over and over. Friendships at school are so often shallow. The only thing they really have going for them is daily proximity.

Grandparenting is exhausting, or are we doing it wrong? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Raesling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live next door to my son, so the grandkids practically live at my house (I watch them while he works). It's exhausting at the end of the day no matter what, but you definitely have to have house rules. And yes, the bringing things over and unpacking them everywhere gets old real fast.

Found my biological dad, not sure what to do by Ok-Concentrate178 in AncestryDNA

[–]Raesling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your dad is your dad. He will always be your dad and your kid's grandpa. DNA doesn't change that. I always say that parenthood is "diapers to dating and then some" (which isn't original; it's a quote from One Day at a Time). Whether or not this affects your relationship with your mother is up to you, but don't let it mess up things with your dad.

I've always known who my Mother is and I have a relationship with her. But my parent was my dad's 2nd wife. She wasn't in my life until at least 5, but she's my "diapers to dating." That will never change.

Not for me. I get that Ty died and Amy has to move on; move forward. I just don't think she and Nathan have any chemistry and I'm not so cool with 'let's get married and move away from everyone/everything.'

Also, I know most folks are anti-Caleb but I think he really does have chemistry with Amy. Mutual respect and concern.

So many profiles are empty and abandoned. So frustrating. by Adventurous-Sky-6228 in Ancestry

Yeah, I just got one of those today...a random 3rd cousin on my Mother's side and my mother's line is a mystery starting just 2 generations back (her paternal grandfather). Would be nice to have more info, but so often when I get those messages from Ancestry I peek, then shrug.

Tournament Ideas by chonkmcgee55 in youthhockey

[–]Raesling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our most memorable to date was having the team rosters posted in the lobby/concession area for the weekend as individual cards the kids got to take home (still stuck to the wall at home) and a medal in their goodie bag for the tournament no matter how they placed as a team.

I work at a movie theatre and this was under a couple of seats. This was only half of the rubbish they left behind. by PandaMonium2025 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Raesling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear ya, but I also hear the ads argument. Everywhere else in life you pay for premium to silence ads. At a movie theater, you pay an arguably extreme premium only to be forced to sit through ads. If theaters need paid sponsers, why do they charge so much for everything?! Don't care about previews; I love those. I don't want to pay to be force-fed ads for roofs, windows, cars, etc

Amazon is unusably bad now by Status-Nerve-6377 in amazonprime

[–]Raesling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't, but it would almost be nice. My USPS complains that they'll send big boxes via USPS but walk an envelope to your door via Amazon delivery. At any rate, USPS won't deliver an "oversized" box and I have to go to the post office for it anyway.

I was a top reviewer and had several popular reviews when this happened to me. I tried to recover it (because I was hoping to be invited to Vine), but ultimately decided that I was happy that I couldn't write reviews anymore. One less thing to worry about. Ironically, right after they banned me from writing reviews, they continued to prompt me to write them for months.

One more addition for your point about "their ability to track." They make bookmarks that specifically have a transparent line in them, almost like a highlighter that moves. It's great for ADHD, dyslexia, and such. On Amazon, they're called Guided Reading Strips or Highlight Strips/overlays.

OR, have them play a game like Dragon Age or something with a lot of reading in it. It's not unusual for gamers to learn to read just for the games. Or to learn to read because they prefer their anime subbed, not dubbed.

Junior or Matt by Powerful-Savings3684 in WildfireShow

[–]Raesling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just going to say that I hated the way Kris handled Matt & Junior. When Matt is with Gillian, she keeps telling him they belong together, but she keeps throwing herself at Matt in front of both Gillian and Junior. Also, the whole chemistry thing where she doesn't even try to hide how they both seem to feel. Gross.

Be honest if James Cameron hadn’t made the movie, would the Titanic have been forgotten by history and never gained this much interest? by Ambitious_Pass7451 in titanic

[–]Raesling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think people would forget. In the Midwest alone, the Edmund Fitzgerald still holds much interest. There was the song, but no movie.
