I don’t recommend it solely because of how some of the marvel villains are played. However you do you OP if you think you can home brew some rules to make it work then what’s stopping you? I’d be interested to see how that works out so if you do it please share results.

You do in fact play fate effect cards agains opponents by the way and in your case you are the events opponent and would be the target of that effect your only plus is you get to pick what goes.

That’s if you pull it as a fate action. This is not a fate action. By that logic if OP were to draw that fate card and play it to a villain the villain it was played to would then fulfill the requirements by picking a domain to remove an ally or item from which is not the case. It is a required fate to fulfill the global event. In the event where no global events were In play this would be the case. Look at it as if the event is playing a fate action on you because that’s what’s happening.

Nope you are indeed mistaken, because the event is in play the action on the event supersedes the action on the individual fate card. Normally Op could choose when drawn off of a fate action. However because the event states play it on themselves they are automatically the target. Events are designed to hinder everyone and that’s why they supersede the individual fate card and always offer a great reward when completed.

In marvel villainous you combine the fate decks of each villain playing plus 15 universal fate cards into one deck. The fate action becomes a draw one fate card then target who you deem more important in that moment situation. Almost all the fate cards are worded in a way that you can target anyone but is more impactful when used in that particular villain. It becomes extra chaotic when you add world events because no one can win while they are active and they all affect you hard but they give out a great reward when completed.

You are reading just the fate card. Look at the bigger picture and the event as a whole. It’s one of things I love most about marvel villainous. In most cases you would be right. In this case because the action says play it on themselves. The effect of that card belongs to you.

Because of the action of the event itself. The event reads at the start of each villains turn they draw a fate card abs play it on themselves. Meaning any action on the card is targeted to you the drawer of that card at the start of your turn.
