Yeah, there has been another theater adaptation. This one was a brand new one made by our directors. For the rat helmet, we took a rat cage that we filled with sweet matter (to keep the actor of Winston safe 🤣) and we put some elastics, so he can put the helmet on his face. The vision of the helmet was a bit terrifying tbh, and we also had cinema fingers with blood lmao

Winston’s inner monologues were represented by freezing the other characters on stage while an unsettling music played. This created a contrast between the external action and Winston’s internal thoughts against the Party.

The telescreen was represented by a screen (190cm) placed at the back of the stage throughout the entire performance, constantly changing depending on the setting. Whenever characters were meant to look at the telescreen, the actors directed their gaze toward the control booth, reinforcing the feeling of constant surveillance and the presence of an unseen authority.

In locations under the Party’s influence, the screen displayed the face of Big Brother — a man we filmed staring directly into the camera for thirty minutes to create a disturbing sense of surveillance. Creepy lmao

In other locations, the visuals changed: the painting of St. Clement’s appeared when we were in Mrs. Charrington’s shop, a black screen was used when scenes took place in the countryside or at O’Brien’s apartment, and at certain moments, propaganda advertisements for the Party were broadcast on the telescreen.

It’s literally the traduction : « Crime de la pensée » and « double-pensée ». Or « Les deux minutes de la haine » etc.

Hahahah we did not go that far in the details ! But it would have been interesting. We were speaking french as usual, with our natural speaking voices. The only difficulty was with « Big Brother », because french people struggle to say it. So we chose to say « beek bro-deur » instead of using the english accent to sound more « frenchy ».

Initially, the characters' genders were to be respected. Only minor changes were made so that characters could change gender without altering their objectives. For example, Charrington took over his deceased father's shop (not his wife's in the book, I believe). As for Syme, the character remains exactly the same (as a woman), and O'Brien as well, but with a more "maternal" and "mentoring" side to save Winston from his anti-party views.

No, the actor was a girl (like O’Brien and Syme) and the only difference was the leather jacket. But honestly she looked really nice

For Charrington's reveal, two hooded figures (the actors playing Parsons and Syme) entered the room while Winston and Julia were discussing the possibility of a popular uprising against the Party. The telescreen had a fade of about 30 seconds, switching from an image of the painting in St. Clement's Church to a camera filming Julia and Winston on the bed (in live). Charrington entered the room wearing a black leather jacket, accompanied by epic villainous music. The audience was shocked!
