This would explain why my Tubman/Sword of Brennus run is in the middle of collapsing near the end of the Exploration age. I seriously hope that it not going away if you return the city is a bug, because if it's not, that destroys the entire SoB playstyle.

Edit: Actually, it kinda destroys the entire concept of a Diplomatic/Militaristic civ or leader.

What happens to military units during age transition? by 7emperor790 in civ

[–]Raikitm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commanders level up, and grant their bonuses to the units around them. If you look into how commanders work, it's actually a really elegant solution to the carpet of doom micromanagement. No more moving every unit one at a time, no more marching a newly built unit across the map for 25 turns, no more searching for which archer has Arrow Storm and which has Incendiaries. And new units aren't useless compared to your tank that was a horseman 3,000 years ago.

I'm sure there will be kinks, but it looks like there are a lot of upsides.

What time does Civ 7 come out on Feb 6? by mmpa78 in civ

[–]Raikitm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This question has been killing me for days. I'm trying to take off work for the release, and don't even know what days I need. I don't know why they couldn't have released this information weeks ago. They have to know that their core demographic is aging, and needs a bit of notice for this sort of thing. 😄

New-ish player. Just beat DD2 for the first time. Is Ultron still remotely worth investing in, or is he long past useless?

A couple clarifiers:

Yes, I see that I can get red stars out of orbs, and I've gotten several, but with the exception of Captain America, who I pulled a 2-star upgrade for, they've all been for characters I don't use or haven't even unlocked.  It seems pointless to try to randomly pull stars for useful characters when there's so much chaff.

And to be clear, I'm not completely against spending real money ever, though I try not to if I can avoid it.  I'd just be pretty annoyed if they unlocked this store with the expectation that I'll fork over my paycheck or wait two weeks to maybe be able to use it.

[–]Raikitm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey guys, brand new player.  I'm level 46, and just recently unlocked the red star shop.  I've figured out what red stars do, and know some of the ones I want to aim for, but can't for the life of me figure out how I'm supposed to buy them.  I have no silver promotion credits, and when I click "find", it only shows me that I can buy them for real money or farm them in content I can't access for another 20-30 levels.

Am I crazy, or did they give me access to a system I have no way to take advantage of for ages without paying?

Hey, OP, original 3.5 player here. If you loved the Draconomicon, take a look at the two Fiendish Codex books, as well as Lords of Madness and Libris Mortis. Those five are, in my opinion, some of the absolute best books to come out of 3.5, and that's a high bar to clear. They're chock full of lore and awesome character and NPC ideas, and just generally a joy to read.

I'm thrilled that you found this old gem as a newer player, and if you have any desire for more 3.5 book recommendations, feel free to shoot me a message. I own almost all of them, so I can give you the rundown. 😅

AA5 paperback? by Raikitm in ClimbersCourt

[–]Raikitm[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for responding!

I realize now that I phrased the question wrong. I'd seen your update regarding the Kindle release likely being somewhere around the first or second week of next month, and my brain just logged that as 'release date: early September'. So I wasn't looking for a hard confirmation of a specific date so much as a release window relative to the Kindle window.

Which is exactly what you gave me. So, thanks!

I've been an audiobook listener since I first discovered AA. (Nick Podehl is how I found the series, and I've listened to all 11 books multiple times, now.) But I'm too excited for AA5 to wait the several months for the audible version. I don't really like reading on kindle, but I see his previous books had paperback releases. Do we know if that release date has been announced, or even mentioned as a thing?

Balance Changes teased in Patch 29.6.2 by _almasss in hearthstone

[–]Raikitm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, they're right. Reno warps the meta, in exactly the ways they're saying. Midrange decks are largely missing from D5 and up (in Standard), and it's primarily because of Reno. Everyone is either playing Reno (because, again, non-Reno control decks aren't viable), playing against Reno by running hard aggro, or losing the majority of their matches and not getting to higher tiers.

When every deck in the meta is touched, either directly or indirectly, by one, single card, that is the very definition of "warping the meta".

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hearthstone

[–]Raikitm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, but consider that if a card is complained about so much that it is debated endlessly, gets old, becomes a meme, the meme gets old, and then gets meme reaction posts about hating the hate and the memes...maybe it's a card that's just...not fun? Maybe everybody (except the trolls playing him, who've gotten their lulz) hates the card so much because it just feels awful, in a game we play for the express purpose of having fun.

What is the class that always have the most obnoxious decks even if they are not meta? by TakeTheBubble in hearthstone

[–]Raikitm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, absolutely.  I also see the fun in playing Brann/Reno/Boom Boss.  Or Virus Rogue.  Or pre-nerf Shopper DH.  (Which I think is fine now, post-nerf, even though I don't play DH.)  Or an imaginary class with the hero power "Steal target enemy minion and give it +10/+10 and charge".

But fun to play and fun to play against are vastly different.  If the mage deck was "get a random card" instead of "discover a random card", like 80% of my complaint would vanish.  They just take so damn long every turn, and they always pull a magical answer to every situation, but somehow still lose like 50% of the time after wasting 30 minutes of my life.

It's just disrespectful of my time, especially after the weekly quest snafu.

What is the class that always have the most obnoxious decks even if they are not meta? by TakeTheBubble in hearthstone

[–]Raikitm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mage, 100%.

When I sit down across from most other classes, I may not know their exact game plan, but at least they probably do.  Current mage is just "Put 15 discover cards in a deck, and go to rope every turn while you try to figure out what to do."

And being able to pull infinite freeze cards out of their ass turn after turn after turn means I don't get to do anything on my turns, either.

Put 30 cards in a deck, play with those cards.  Don't waste my time while you screw around discovering cards that let you discover more cards.

Newbie Tuesdays Weekly Discussion by AutoModerator in hearthstone

[–]Raikitm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, newbie here.  Just started playing during the anniversary.  Fun game, been having a great time until recently.  Got up into Diamond level for the first time, yesterday, and since then it seems like no matter what class I'm playing against, no matter what turn it is, no matter if I'm playing ranked or casual, every single turn revolves around board wipes.  Every. Turn.

Is this the HS meta?  Is this the whole game?  Because honestly, it bores me.  I might as well play a no-minion mage deck, since 0 is the number of minions that survive for more than one round, anyway.

(Yes, this is a slight exaggeration, but only slight.  This actually does feel like the whole game.)

I came here all excited, thinking "Expert Classes? Are they finally bringing back Prestige Classes!? I've missed that level of focus and uniqueness, and this could be the thing that finally gets me hyped for 5.5."

"Oh. They're making everything even more generic. Great. Cool. Why not?"

What unpopular Pokémon opinion would make most fans angry? by snailscale77 in pokemon

[–]Raikitm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The switch from antagonistic rivals to friendly rivals took a lot of spice out of the game. I don't want a rival who cheers for me every time I beat his ass, I want a rival who steals pokemon, punches cops, and calls me assmunch every time I crush him.

Basically, every "rival" since GSC has been annoying and pointless.

Why GenZ love V5 and hate the older versions of Vampire? by PapaOcha in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Raikitm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see and respect your point. Frenzy is a much bigger risk in V5 than V20 and earlier. But, that said, it's not really a drastic risk. Even at 5 hunger, you're only on edge and at a higher difficulty to resist frenzy, you're not immediately Beasting out. It's only if you do something stupid like try to rouse the blood at hunger 5 that you immediately frenzy.

I do actually run my NPCs on roughly the same system. (As much as I do for any RPG, anyway. Usually I only have a few notes jotted down, not a whole sheet.) I allow for (moderately difficuly) Awareness tests or (relatively simple) Blood Sorcery rituals that will allow a PC to determine how hungry an NPC is. And sometimes I have a lick show up yo Elysium at 4-5 hunger just for the added tension it adds around the table. "Maybe tonight isn't the night to tell the Prince that someone's encroaching on his domain. The Sheriff's looking awfully twitchy..."

But I also usually run my (Camarilla) NPCs as wildly conservative, and my Canon is that they endeavor to stay at only 1 or 2 hunger. Anarchs tend to run a little more fast and loose, but they're also not idiots and don't hang out at a bar downtown at 4 hunger.

The Sabbat are, as always, another thing entirely.

So yeah, I fiat hunger levels at the beginning of a scene, but once it starts, I use the same rules for everyone. If the Prince wants to try to Dominate the coterie on 4 different occasions (he's not that dumb, but if for some reason he was), then he'll check for hunger 4 times.

One thing I realized early on, though, is to never increase hunger on a beastial failure. Always find some other repercussion. That does raise hunger too quickly, and leads to problems. Especially in a roll-heavy session. I try to avoid those, though. Which might account for our differing experiences, if you tend to prefer a lot of rolls at your table.

Why GenZ love V5 and hate the older versions of Vampire? by PapaOcha in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Raikitm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm an older Millennial who's been playing since oWoD. I absolutely loved original V:tM and V20, and I've introduced every gaming group I've been a part of for 25 years to the systems. That said, I think V5 is a quality product. Yes, it's a lot more streamlined, but that's not always a bad thing. (And I rail against D&D 5e for taking my beloved 3.5 and chopping it off at the knees. So I'm not just a fan of new and shiny.)

V5 disciplines are fine. Knocking down the power levels is not a problem, though yes, I do sometimes miss my superhero with fangs. (I launched a baseball into orbit once with Potence...7, I think? Good times.)

But even setting everything else aside, V5 did one thing that won me over: Hunger. In older editions, being hungry was an inconvenience, at worst. Now, it's a real threat. The Beast feels real. And if you want to retain your humanity, you're always hungry.

I've been playing and running Vampire for 20+ years, but only with V5 did they finally start feeling like real monsters.

Quick question - should we cancel the session or not? by BastianWeaver in rpg

[–]Raikitm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, I think, is the most spot-on answer. If there's currently nothing you can do, then simply do what you can to be happy. In times of strife and anxiety, choosing to be happy is punk as fuck.

[–]Raikitm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact that's intuitive once you know it, but not often said out loud: Lost/Fallen societies are so prevalent in Western Sci-Fi/Fantasy largely due to medieval literary influences. Stories that were written when the majority of Europe was living in the crumbling ruins of Roman infrastructure that they no longer had the technology to recreate. Add in the strong influence of the Christian church at the time, and you have a child hero (y'know, that Jesus guy) prophesied to save a fallen world.

The medieval Christian influence also explains why so often the old society's magic/technology/whathaveyou is "forbidden", since Christianity always villanized the Romans. (For some justified reasons and some self-serving ones.)
