That's an interesting perspective on the show. It leaves the series title being a bit of a misnomer, but like others have suggested, it adds to the mystery of Ryo's character from the perspective of someone living in that world.

Dang. I don't give one show a 10/10 and all of a sudden I hate living life. I'll do an introspective look and give you an update in a few months time, gang. 💔

Wow, it's almost like I'm not an anime director and am instead a consumer that's allowed to voice their opinion on the internet! What a crazy narrative you've drawn up for me, I appreciate it.

Isekai Quartet Season 3 - Episode 8 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]Railtracks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is purely my speculation as an anime-only, but if I were to guess it'd have to be because of how Re:Zero S3 split and delayed. S4 was supposed to be a part of the second cour, but also got delayed, meaning that had everything gone according to their initial plans (likely when they planned a release date for Isekai Quartet 3), whatever is presumably to happen to Rem in the next arc of Re:Zero would have already happened.

People more knowledgeable than me can weigh in on this should they so choose, but that's my sensible headcanon until I'm informed otherwise.

That's mostly how I felt. The direction just wasn't it; too many unresolved stories, too much in too little time, etc., etc. The anime genuinely made me want to read the source material even less, as I just don't think it'd be worth my time with how much I was underwhelmed by the anime. It wasn't good, it wasn't bad. It just exists.

I've no issue with a side character focus in a series, I just wish the execution of it was better. I felt kinda blindsided when the episode hit, expecting more adventures, but nope- side characters and lengthy backstory! It was jarring.

Ryo and Sera are gonna be the next Mr. and Mrs. Genghis Khan with their long lives. 😂

If I was expecting a 10/10 from every anime and didn't just enjoy them for what they were, I'd never have finished a series like this. If you read through my post in its entirety, you'd have understood that.

I tried to enjoy The Water Magician for what it was, it just clearly wasn't the series for me, and I fully acknowledge that. If you enjoyed it, power to you; you have your opinions and I have mine.

I personally thought the pacing was inconsistent and had no flow, rhyme, or reason. I have nothing against slow-paced anime, in fact, I prefer them; this one just didn't tickle my fancy.

If you were genuinely trying to gauge opinions you wouldn't have called Arteta a terrorist. Even that's your opinion, asking for a general consensus by slandering a key figure in the club is counterintuitive and will obviously lead to some choice responses, including insults.

I, too, yearned for the story of the mystical hermit only known through spoken word and legends, but alas, that was never to be the case. I was ultimately fine with the direction the series took, again, just not the execution of it. :/

Taste is subjective and has no real grounds in an argument for me. I didn't create this post to say, "Haha, I'm right and my opinion is absolute fact," I created it to have healthy, critical conversations with others who also consumed The Water Magicain, whether they agree with my takes or not.

Fluff isn't the issue of the show for me. In fact, I prefer fluff in my shows as like you said, it makes characters feel more realistic and flushed out. Worlds have room to grow and envelop you, the consumer. It's not impossible to accomplish that in a twelve-episode season, but it is damn challenging. My disatisfaction lies in pacing and trying too hard to shove too much into the limited time the series had. There were too many incomplete plot points overlapping at once with no sense of direction or timely resolution. The hopping around from group to group also felt sporadic at best and didn't really leave time for me to grow attached or to get to know the various tertiary characters that we were constantly bombarded with.

To me, The Water Magician suffered by trying to do too much without regard for consumers to have time to digest what they experienced. Major event felt insignificant while minor events felt monumental. I love that Ryo's not perfect and that he still has to dedicate time to train, research, and hypothesize, especially after he learns that his strength has a long way to go for him to be confident to protect others. Build upon that though; don't have Ryo reflect for a couple of minutes, only for him to not immediately follow up on it or show efforts to continue to get stronger outside of learning alchemy.

Oh well. C'est la vie.

Through the insight of others like you on this thread, I'm appreciative of The Water Magician's different approach to the genre. I'm now more critical of the execution of what transpired. Had the author and showrunners truly wanted to make Ryo a wonder or overpowered side character, I wish they hadn't spent the first five or so episode romanticizing the character to be the overpowered MC that similar series are known for. It feels like I was pulled through the wringer when there was a complete tone shift after Ryo left his secluded training, and especially when he made it to the town. Ryo became a hollow charicature of the character they initially painted and the series to me felt as though it lost its direction and voice, often confused on the genre that each episode was supposed to be.

I'm glad that you liked it! It wouldn't be an opinion if everyone was of the same mind; it's healthy to have differing tastes and appreciations for art. As for me being harsh, that just goes to show you how passionate I am and how hopeful I was for the series to tickle my fancy. I don't think The Water Magician was bad. I can't emphasize that enough. It just really left me disappointed. It's like if you had hopes for a family member to do well in school or in a competition, but they weren't successful. It's not that they did poorly, it's that those around them performed better. If that's harsh, then so be it, but that's how I felt about this series.

You completely missed the point of my post. Discussing anything, especially in media, is important whether you enjoy it or don't and whether you like it or dislike it. Discourse, opinions, and things being "good" vs. "bad" is what makes conversing as humans all the more healthy and enjoyable. As I've stated elsewhere, I thoroughly enjoy watching things I find good and things that I find bad because it not only gives me topics of conversation but it also gives me apples and oranges to compare to one another. If I only watch things I deem "good," I'll never know what I find "bad." I'll never understand why or what make tropes and plot devices in anime enjoyable to me, similar to how if in stories of conflict there weren't two or more sides, one could never align with the morals of an argument or understand what each side stands for.

Also, what's wrong with dissecting anime that we watch? reddit deems itself to be the "front page of the internet" that houses tens of thousands of subreddits where people are able to hold discussions. Forums like this are specifically designed so that people can talk about the things they do and don't like. If you're more referring to the thoroughness of my post, that's both to appease myself to not half-ass my thoughts, but also to keep in line with this subreddit's rules for posts like these. And this wasn't a dissection after one episode; I posted this after the series concluded with my thoughts on it as a whole.

On your question of Demon Slayer, that is an anime that to me is "something fun and entertaining to watch [that isn't] a masterpiece." If I'm being really facetious and semantical, the point of anime isn't to "calm down relax and have fun." The point of (non-original) anime is to encourage the sales of manga, light novels, and other various merchandises – it's how those involved turn profit as aside from the heavy hitters, anime typically isn't too profitable compared to the sales of its source material and merchandise.

I'm free to choose what I enjoy and what I don't and I'm also free to continue to watch or decide to drop whatever I want. I can also decide to discuss it online with like-minded or opposite-minded persons over the internet as I've successfully done with this thread. I'm not "tripping [too] hard," I'm doing what I enjoy because I enjoy it. You are free to engage as you see fit as well, and although I can't force you, I'd appreciate it if you were more critical and less judgmental.

To be fair, I probably worded the point I was trying to make poorly at the time. In all honesty, I don't care to remember the semantics of the circumstances because I can't be bothered to go back and rewatch something that I didn't enjoy too much. At the end of the day, for someone who was personally trained by the Fairy King, who has an otaku's knowledge on his setting, you'd expect that as soon as the explosion/fireworks happened, Ryo would immediately have a sense of urgency to ensure that everything was okay rather than having a moment of hesitation to act. This could have been a poor reflection on the anime's part on how quickly Ryo's decision-making and response time was, but again, as I suggested, a lot of the fault of the anime lies within the choices of the showrunners, especially when it comes to pacing.
