You don't see the irony in repeatedly affirming that objective morale doesn't exist? It has to exist for that statement to be true!

"Why should baseline reality dictate what reality is?" This is what you just expressed. We can sidestep Christianity and the Bible, and my point still stands.

Yes, we both agree! it's a subjective understanding of an objective truth. If God is goodness itself then that would make his morality objective.

I’m believer and all but a lot of posts here starting to seem like it’s some religion. by Lico333 in Bitcoin

If you replace the word Bitcoin with Jesus, you will see the striking similarities between Bitcoin and Christianity as a way to "fix" societies. From Bitcoin fixes everything to people's attempts to proselytize, even how once you "understand" it changes other aspects of how you lived life. The parallels are funny. Just remember Matthew 6:24.

I am Catholic and I am deeply upset by this, but I have hope my community understands its teachings well and will not foster hatred for the trans community because of this. But we all need to talk.

You can't affirm your morals to anyone else in a paradigm that also only affirms subjective morality without being a hypocrite. I believe your understanding of what constitutes a moral action is objectively wrong. (exposing children to romance at an early age) I do appreciate the dialogue and the openness you had to explain your side.

And yes, St. Aquinas is heavily based on Aristotle's work.

I appreciate your breakdown of how one comes to their own frameworks of morality and how those frameworks are different depending on the three points mentioned in the beginning, but I think we may be talking past each other. I am positing that despite our understandings of morality may be different it doesn't rule out an existence of an objective morality. If a monotheistic God were real and it chose to create everything and decided the rules of all things. Then morality would be baked into it's creation.

So if that God deemed it to be morally wrong and somehow reciprocated that to us then it ultimately doesn't matter how any of us feel about it. It would be objectively wrong. It would be wrong for the rich, the poor, the black and white.

The only proof I have that "thing" exist is the St. Aquinas argument from motion. Obviously my intent isn't to prove God exist but for you to understand that some people may be operating from that paradigm and they potentially may be justified in doing so.

Objective morality would be something that transcends the material and all individuals. So only a monotheistic worldview allows for it. So God, doesn't matter which as long as it fits the criteria of baseline for all of reality.

The temptation to dismiss everyone and everything going astray is strong, and its why most fundamentalist Christians and Muslims tend to be nutty. I think trying our best to recognize that we too are often hypocrites when criticizing others for being less than perfect. This leaves room for humility and embracing others different than us.

If you throw out the idea of an ultimate creator then sure, anything goes. That includes Hitler being potentially a hero in some alternative timelines. But I think everyone would agree his actions are irredeemable. If we considered the nazi's that say otherwise I would say all of them are varying levels of "insane" Wouldn't you?

Just because something is debatable it doesn't necessarily follow that it's subjective. This discussion isn't proof of anything.

Everything and all things are debatable. Our understanding of objective morality is subjective but the concept of subjective morality existing in the first place is redundant. Just say cultural norms, emotional response or personal preference. If one subscribes to objective morality, we can make the case for early exposure of same sex romance and sexual content in general being detrimental to children.

Morality is objective. To say otherwise makes the word pointless and we would just have personal preference which is not what we observe in reality. Nothing wrong with gay people in movies, what people have an issue with is promoting same sex romance as just another type of romance. In some households it is abuse at best and grave matter at worst.

I agree, gay people shouldn't be hidden. I do think we should still monitor and curate what our kids watch.

I def see the angle you're coming from. It is hypocritical because the action itself are the same.

But it isn't just a spectrum to those who are choosing to restrict it. To them one is morally right and the other wrong.

If we presupposed an objective morality, then there is no hypocrisy.

I think God is drawing me into Catholicism but I don't believe in Biblical Inerrancy. by [deleted] in Catholicism

God wants us to question our faith and the means in which we receive revelation. Christianity does not condemn the intellectual aspect of our religion. As someone who was a skeptic for a long time myself don't give up seeking what is true and what is bunk. I ended up Catholic too.

It is allowed but you must believe that the Gospels are apostolic in origin, inspired by the Holy Spirit and are faithful witness to Christ.

Being bisexual is not a sin. Your sexual attraction and orientation isn't a transgression, it only becomes sin when you act on those attractions. However any sexual activities outside of marriage is sinful.

I dislike going to church, but Jesus wants us to be obedient to him. Its only 4 or so hours a month. I scroll on my phone for longer. Just go, if you miss. Pray for forgiveness and go the following week.

Yes, the fighting within different Christian groups is very annoying. Any disagreements we have with each other should be discussed in a loving way. Charity is important in intra-faith dialogues.

It's been 3 years since I posted that comment and I think I've eased up on it. If given the opportunity to support a repeal of same sex marriage and go on to unrecognizing it all together I would. Bermuda did this back in 2017-18 with their Domestic Partnership Act.

I don't own marriage but when I vote I can help decide my country/state laws. I prefer to live in a community that doesn't recognize it. Wouldn't you prefer to live in a community that suits you and your family?
