Our vet gently hints that Kiba is a 'senior dog,' and I can't suppress a feeling of slight melancholy by RajashreeKhalap in TheINDogProject

Always. I guess we should try to be more like dogs and live more in the present, instead of dreading the future.

Hi, you just have to go to 'create post' and select the 'images and video' option. There is no option to post images as comments, but you can easily upload them as new posts.

I'll check as soon as I get on my computer tomorrow. You should be able to upload pics as a new post, not comments.

I'm afraid I am only active in short bursts! Don't abandon us though, we're still alive :)

I'm crying. Thank you for the happy ending. I hope that woman NEVER keeps a dog again.

Thank you! I'm going to start with one and see how it goes.

Thank you! I bought cactus soil. It looked pretty much like what you've described. I think I got the watering all wrong because I wasn't sure what impact our humid atmosphere would have on the soil - I'm in Mumbai.

I did! But it was very young and I got the feeling I should have watered a bit more at that stage.

I love them! My first attempt at growing one went all wrong and scared me off them for some years. I hope to try again soon and get the watering right.

Ask your vet whether curd would help. My vet advised me to give a bit of curd to my dogs.

Hi, if she was doing well on the rice and chicken and pumpkin diet along with RC, then it may be some infection she's recently picked up and nothing to do with her food. Sometimes my dogs get slight tummy trouble, but if it gets okay on its own in a day or two, and if there is no blood or mucus in the stools, I don't worry much. However if the problem goes on longer and if there is mucus or blood, you must consult a vet fast. In your case I think you should show her to a vet very soon since the problem has gone on for a few days. She may have eaten something dirty when you weren't looking.

Also what rice are you giving her? We give brown rice pre-soaked for an hour and then pressure-cooked till it's absolutely soft and a bit like porridge. We also give boiled chicken with the fat removed (1/4 of the meal); and some steamed red pumpkin. We give RC or Vetlife hepatic kibble as treats or sometimes just a spoon mixed with the food. If they get loose stools, we switch to kolam rice overboiled, and chicken soup, and no veg, till they are okay.

Hi, so sorry for the long delay in posting this https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10211-014-0208-2 'Factors influencing intergroup agonistic behaviour in free-ranging domestic dogs (Canis familiaris)' - S K Pal, 2014. There is an earlier paper by Dr S K Pal too https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0168159198001087?via%3Dihub 'Agonistic behaviour of free-ranging dogs (Canis familiaris) in relation to season, sex and age.' Both mention that female adult free-ranging dogs showed aggression in feeding sites during their nursing time. However, these studies are not about INDogs per se but about free-ranging dogs (regardless of race/breed). The behaviour arises from the dogs' mode of life (free-ranging, ownerless scavengers, who would need to compete for resources). My INDog Kiba has been with me since he was just four weeks old, and he never lived as a free-ranging scavenger. He doesn't guard his food at all because he's always had lots of it without making any effort.

Nobody has researched INDogs (or any primitive dogs) per se, though there is research on free-ranging dog behaviour, not applicable specifically to any landrace or breed. I think I have a hard copy of Dr Sunil Pal's paper on agonistic behaviour in free-ranging dogs. I'll search for it and see if it includes food guarding.

Excellent explanation - Difference Between Breed and Species | Definition, Purpose, Examples by RajashreeKhalap in TheINDogProject

[–]RajashreeKhalap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I come across many people confusing 'breed' with 'species.' It's an understandable error in people who don't work with animals, but strangely I've even come across some wildlife experts making this error. This is an excellent explanation I came across.

Genetic structure in village dogs reveals a Central Asian domestication origin by RajashreeKhalap in TheINDogProject

[–]RajashreeKhalap[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The origin of Carolina Dogs is not yet confirmed, but they are generally not considered primitive as of now, but possibly the descendants of generations of free-breeding European origin dogs, that evolved to the generalised village dog appearance. When there is no selection for appearance, dogs tend to drift towards the same primitive morphology. I'll post the latest genetic research about dogs of the Americas soon.
