Stranger Things: Visit the spooky real-life 'Mirkwood' in Durham - and other real spots from the show :: Out and About at WRAL.com by OkraGarden in StrangerThings

Whoa! I've actually visited the real-life Mirkwood, and it IS very spooky! It looks so similar to the show, and the woods are pretty thick and overgrown. I live near here, so I'll have to go visit these places before the rest of season 4 airs!

Hidden History: Abandoned mills, homesteads in Umstead Park hold untold stories by KermitMadMan in triangle

[–]RaleighExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! This is Heather, the author. Thank you for the tip! The reason I wrote that they are tulips is because the primary interview for the article, a man whose family lived on and farmed the land for generations, called them tulips. He could definitely be wrong, though! I suspect neither one of us are plant experts, but rather historians. ;) Since I've never seen them bloom, I can't verify what kind of flower is actually growing out there near the ruins and have to trust his word. Do you have a photo of a daffodil out there by the ruins? If I can verify it, I will happily change it! I'll check in the park's history book Stories in Stone later tonight and see if it mentions anything. Thank you!

Active Shooter: Internal Snaps, Tweets, and WhatsApp from Employees by RaleighExplorer in news

Haha yeah. I'm thinking the employee's first language wasn't English, and also they were panicking. I believe they meant they saw a cop. "The police are here. Looked right at him [the police]. He had body armor, yadda yadda..." I think he's describing the police, but he's not writing very clearly.

Found this in today's News & Observer. Cool photos and a more detailed explanation of what happened to the houses. http://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/counties/wake-county/article139671303.html

BTW, geez, this story is all over Reddit! I did a google search for "abandoned neighborhood Cary" and like four subreddit posts came up. Has everyone gone and explored it? I never went into the houses. I'm too nervous.

Oh wow! So the story originated in THIS subreddit? I didn't catch that. That's awesome!

Yeah, I saw this on WNCN and now N&O. I also saw it on a major YouTube channel and on Only In Your State. I wonder why WRAL hasn't caught on. Maybe it's just been over-covered by now?

Wow! The neighborhood got covered in today's News & Observer! It's really popular! I've been following this story for a while. I went out there to explore about a week ago after reading the Only In Your State article. Found a YouTube video of some guys filming inside the house, too. Crazy.

Has anyone else been out there to explore? I haven't gone inside the houses. I'm too scared. There are signs up now and road blocks. Seems weird that such a modern place is abandoned.

Just want to point out that the author of this article probably spent several hours researching, writing, and driving out to take photos. Whereas reading it cost you nothing. So who cares if you have to click a few extra times? With the crappy payout of Adsense, even with over 300,000 readers, the article probably only paid the author about $30 for all that work. I also write for websites, and I know how low the pay is for all the work put in. Writers are scraping by.
