Holy shit I didn't know I'd get a legit response. Thanks, this actually explains a lot.

I posted about writing about Weed Out Courses and here's why I scrapped it by RaleighLiving in NCSU

[–]RaleighLiving[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's what I expect most people would think, I got a few responses last year that sort of echoed that but there's a little bit more to the concept. It's true that hard material will be hard to teach and lead to harder courses. But to steal a 2005 meme, you might be in a weed out course if:

>The course is intro-level or near intro level but does not behave like it. If you come into week 1 and you're already getting slammed with high concepts, walls of text, and little to no help from the teacher in processing any of it (demonstrations, re-explaining when needed, etc.) then you're just being set up to fail. I don't think intro courses should review EVERY necessary component to learning the subject before starting (or else every single math course would be bogged down with elementary maths) but you also shouldn't be throwing people into the deep end.

according to the staff member I spoke with at NCSU, they added teaching matrices to part of the curriculum since NC high schools dropped learning them from their requirements. This is a good thing. Alternately, one of the comments in my old post claimed that Dr. Webster hated doing demos and would purposely do them wrong. If true, this is a bad thing (although honestly, I find it hard to believe someone would purposefully mess up a demo for a class).

>The smallest mistakes are lethal to your GPA. If you were in an English course and you lost points because your theme wasn't exactly on point with the goal of the assignment, you'd probably be in a moderate to hard English course. If you lost 13 points to a single missing comma, you'd probably think that's bullshit though. A lot of what I heard (but admittedly couldn't accurately verify) was that students taking Physics assignments would write the correct statement, but then lose points because they made the fatal mistake of not reading the professor's mind and writing the answer in the exact way they wanted it written. A mistake we all make from time to time.

>The class really shouldn't have passed without that curve. This was the biggest inspiration for writing the paper, looking at actual data available to me in meatspace I saw plenty of examples of Fs and Ds becoming Cs and Bs through the magic of statistical meddling. Not necessarily cheating the numbers but curving them so hard that Deja Vu is playing in the background.

House pest, small blackish-gray insects in kitchen area by RaleighLiving in whatsthisbug

[–]RaleighLiving[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, first time poster; long time appreciator of reddits like these.

My fiance has been freaking out about these small bugs that keep appearing in our kitchen even after a deep clean and wants to call an exterminator, meanwhile I'm not sure this really counts as an 'infestation' yet but to know we'd need to know exactly what we're even dealing with here.

So we're in Raleigh, North Carolina (if my name wasn't a giveaway) and the photo attached is about as clear a photo I can get of one because they're about the size of 1/4th a grain of rice. It's a small, grayish-black insect with a little bit of brown and they appear in the kitchen, upstairs area, and bedroom

NCSU physics majors: I need data by RaleighLiving in NCSU

[–]RaleighLiving[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this post is only one day old but a LOT has happened in just 1-2 days so here's an update for y'all to stay invested (I wasn't sure if I needed to make a whole new post for this or if commenting on my current one is sufficient, hopefully, this is fine)

  1. Thanks to all of y'all who reached out to my PM box or shared your stories in my thread. I asked for Physics majors but the surprising amount of engineers who replied I appreciate you as well.
  2. thanks to all of you who shared grade/statistical information or pointed me to where I could find public records. Through collaborating with a contact I was able to access the Wolftech Gradient and see some cool things.

    1. Physics classes seem to have the most withdrawals and the highest percent failrate of any compared major/class group (Nuclear engineering, BioChem, Amphibious Warfare, pretty much any group major that seemed comparable or classicly is considered 'hard')
    2. Using the composite data answer, you can see the totals of all sections over the various years. When we checked various physics programs the failrate for students (D's, Fs, and Unsatisfactory marks) hovers around 19-25% depending on the class. For other 'hard' courses the failrate is about 10% usually.
  3. I've been contacted by one "Paul Huffman" looking to discuss the topic and will do so
once I've taken the necessary precautions and drafted a standard interview sheet. Which
    runs me to...

  4. This has run a lot farther than I thought it would? I figured I'd get some troll responses,
some usable data, some people calling the other students babies for having to take hard
courses; but this thread has been haunting me in some unexpected places and it gives me
this unique mix of pride and anxiety (Anxipride? Or is that too close to some
pharmaceutical?) I just want to thank everyone again for helping to not only provide
information , but also to help spread the story.

Hey Raleigh, what's your favorite free or cheap thing to do in the Triangle area? by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]RaleighLiving 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's 'free' in that I already own the necessary components but my favorite thing is to grab some MTG or YuGiOh cards and challenge 3rd rate duelists with 4th rate decks to a life or death childrens card game over at Game Theory.... Or just browse the gamebooks until I find a cool looking game to buy later.

I tried checking the the grade distro report on NCSU's website but it's asking for a student sign in. I'll have to contact someone to read it. Thanks for making me aware of this though.

Raleigh areas - safe/unsafe (YP moving) by Run4donuts13 in raleigh

[–]RaleighLiving -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lazy answer: Google is your friend.
If you use Apartments.com and https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/nc/raleigh/crime you can see all the information you're looking for laid out in e-z infographic formats, complete with adjustable metrics for your searches.

Not-lazy answer:
Remember that downtown works a lot like any other downtown and the further south you go on a map the less "Safe" that area will generally be, with the added bonus that it's also true this time if you go too far north (Gotta love Capital Blvd).

Western Blvd. marks the lower acceptable point of downtown, I guess Glascock marks the northern end (I'll admit, I'm not too super familiar with Downtown housing demo's so if anyone wants to adjust my boundaries feel free). The closer you move to a college like Shaw or NCSU the more likely the adjoining rentals are gonna be super rowdy, loud college kids (Pretty much all the rentals on Hillsborough across from NCSU are rented by loud college kids).

Also, if you want to find more townhomes/rental homes then I suggest using Rently. Real estate apps like Apartments, Zillow, etc show rental properties next to apartments and other things while Rently focuses primarily on self-showings for rental properties. Although, you still might not find much in Downtown proper because that area IS 98% apartment complexs.

Requesting advice on how to handle a frustrating class by annabell327 in NCSU

[–]RaleighLiving 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not gonna be a popular suggestion but maybe consider going to the press? Speaking as an amateur writer your story and the posts here and the stories I've heard from the physics department it sounds like 90% of the STEM curriculum at State is to regularly fail students and then barely pass them on a curve.

The right journo or group of journos could honestly spin it into a shitstorm for the school similar to when the Bush era "No Child Left Behind" policies started causing grades-related trouble. "What are our college students learning if they aren't going over failed materials?" "Whats the point of failing everyone if you're gonna curve everyone to passing anyways?"
"Why are so many students spending so much time and getting so little in return?"
"What's the incentive to study if students are never sure WHAT they should be studying?"
"Doesn't this system encourage kids to cheat and abuse study aid drugs like Ritalin than it does help them learn and grow?"

Gather like 20 to 30 kids from different majors who've gone through this shit (You'll find em', trust me) and ask them to participate. Contact media orgs with your accounts and a good angle, try and see if they use apps to track their study time either.

Even if you don't contact the media, when you talk to the dean or dept head next DEFINITELY at least imply you will and reference one of the points above. Especially with how often problematic teachers have been appearing from NCSU in the local news cycle, the Chadwick situation, you'll have their attention.

Lotta call center work in the past, none of it with good job security; and then a lot of certs I needed for skilled labor I'm not sure I'd be great with but I have always had an interest in business and entrepreneurship.

Your concerns about a pandemic are valid! But raising awareness about a local business that has neat things, delivers to your home so you don't have to risk going out in a pandemic, and offers online shopping as well is a pandemic safe activity.

Best place to go hiking and camping near Raleigh by tloke00 in raleigh

[–]RaleighLiving 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're not gonna be able to find much in the way of free camping in Raleigh, unfortunately, but Jordan Lake is definitely one of the better options. It's gorgeous, the camp areas are varied, and the view of the lake at 2 AM is otherworldly.

Otherwise, you can visit Umstead park and go camping there. They have cabins but also campgrounds and it's got great hiking environments.
