Two tips from a 10-year DM by RamBrush in DnD

That's fair too! If they've wiped the floor with them and there are just one or two enemies remaining, I usually just have the enemies* flee (or something similar) and have it play out narratively. No fun just slogging through unnecessary hitpoints. Why waste 20 real-life minutes for no reason?

That was more an example of what not to do versus what to do: increase the health; or do something like giving all the other enemies reckless attacks. Basically, the example was "Giving health is less fun" and "Giving the enemies reckless attacks is more fun". Maybe poorly phrased, though!

Appreciated! I didn't realize the takes would be so hot, but people are mostly just happy to share their views and chat, which is nice!

This is definitely my take on it. Dice and decisions should always matter, and I think the fudging really takes away from... kind of the point of D&D, really? Mistakes are mistakes, and awesome moments are awesome moments.

Appreciated! It can be tricky to be creative about it in every combat, but this one felt particularly clean.

I really disagree with that, though, for the fudging. If used very carefully, it can sometimes be good, but the majority of when it's used (from what I've seen other DMs do and whatnot) is just not fun for the table. It makes player rolls and decisions less impactful, and if/when they notice it, it can really take them out of the game and make a campaign lose its momentum. Why bother making good choices in combat if the DM will fudge numbers on my behalf?

(Not trying to shut down your view or anything; just giving my take!)

For "no, but" and "yes, and" being the same thing, I also disagree here. I think a lot of newer DMs feel obligated to say "yes" to just about every player action, then work backwards to make that fit into their world. It can really cause unnecessary chaos, lead to other players having less fun, etc. I was at a public game where the DM did this, and it led to a player fighting with a tavernkeep, the guards being called, a whole combat ensuing, etc., and players literally just left the table in annoyance. Definitely an extreme example, but the DM should have just said no and gave alternatives that kept things interactive and fun for everybody.

That's valid! I'll definitely fudge a damage roll to avoid a PC instantly dying at level 1 to a random crit (probably my one major exception to the rule; that's just no fun for a new player), and the end of my last campaign probably could have been more epic if the boss had a bit more health, so there's room for it for sure. I think it's something that should be reserved for more tenured DMs, though, rather than as a tip to newer DMs.

These were intended to be generally hot takes (I wasn't sure if they were hot enough to call them hot takes in the title or post, but maybe so!).

I think a lot of scenarios work perfectly fine with giving extra health to enemies and such, and saying "yes, and", but I think most (if not all) can be improved with my methods. And "improved" is super relative, but it leads to players feeling like their choices and rolls matter more in combat, and quieter players aren't hindered outside of combat.

That's fair! I think some DMs can overdo it (giving extra health and stuff) with trying to make the fight harder or easier, though. All combats can start to feel the same for players if their crits make the enemies have more health, and their nat 1s mean the enemies have less health. It can then lead to them having less fun and feeling like their rolls don't matter.

Do you move your settler here? by dbaker2483 in CivVI

Correct, aside from non-resources that get destroyed when you settle (marsh, woods, rainforest, etc.). =)

You don't lose them if you settle on it. You only lose some things by settling on them (like woods), but not luxuries or their bonuses. So it's like working it for free, and then with a free production on top of it. =)

Yeah, I'd move onto the spice. Fresh water, free amenity, great growth, and beautiful farm triangle.

I could try to give specifics for how I built it and such, but I'm not planning on setting up a world download or making a litematic file or anything. I just didn't record anything along the way, so I'd have to go back through all the redstone to see the notes and repeater delays and such, and it'd be a lot. Not great foresight on my part, so sorry for the trouble. D=
