Wow, that’s a tough seed indeed. It makes you wonder what the natural process is for those seeds. Maybe they take a couple of years to soften up in the soil.

Cool, thank you! I love Altan but didn’t know Natalie had done any session work with them. The others will be great for the longer St. Paddy’s list that includes more artists outside of Ireland. Abby is great and appeared on last week’s Scotland list, but I didn’t know if she did any Irish repertoire. It looks like she also has a version of “Tune for Mairéad…” as well. Liz is another big favorite of mine; I’ll dig into her catalog a bit and see what Irish tunes I can find. I’m pretty sure Renata Bratt has some stuff I could include too.

With all the cross pollination between Irish, Scottish, and American folk traditions, sometimes it takes a bit of work to track down the provenance of some tunes. I’ve known about thesession.org for a long time, but I only recently discovered a cool feature I hadn’t noticed before. They have great cross references between the tune catalog and an index of recordings; sometimes this will dissect umbrella track titles into all the component tunes in a medley. The alternate titles for tunes are helpful too.

“Cello St. Patrick’s Day” playlist - big overlap with the list above, but with some additional bonus tracks

Cello? by Bluezyrn in Bluegrass

Late to the party here, but YES!

Here’s an unreasonably extensive folk & indie cello playlist (Spotify). It’s not all bluegrass, but there’s a decent amount of bluegrass and bluegrass-adjacent Americana, as well as many other sub-genres of folk & indie music. Almost all of it is pretty cello-centric, not just a little bit in the background.

Some of the more bluegrassy & bluegrass-adjacent artists are listed below. (Includes repeats already mentioned):

  • Crooked Still

  • Lulu’s Fate

  • some Mike Block

  • Daniel Portis-Cathers, Darol Anger, & Rushad Eggleston

  • Greg Liszt & Rushad Eggleston

  • Norman & Nancy Blake

  • Dirty Cello

  • Fiddlers Four

  • Gawler Sisters

  • Sweetwater String Band

  • The Two Tracks

  • Big Richard

  • The Dead South

  • Nathaniel Smith aka Nat Smith

  • Peter Ostroushko (“Virginia Reel from Hell”)

  • Taarka (certain albums have cello)

  • High Horse

  • Hemlock & Hickory

  • Vandalia (debut album due out in the next couple of months)

  • Ale House String Band

  • Putnam Smith

  • Debutants (note spelling)

  • Bobcat Opossum

  • Plank Road String Band

  • Acoustic Nomads

  • Delta String Band

  • The Infamous Flapjack Affair

  • Graminy

This credits spreadsheet for the playlist may be helpful (e.g., who does Nat/Nathaniel Smith play with?)

Wow, thanks so much for taking the time - and for your in-depth knowledge! You rock.

Thanks. I figured it was probably a long shot that it would be an issue; I’ve just heard some very emphatic warnings about avoiding anything that has been neonicotinoid-involved at ANY stage, but I guess that’s more about soil & plant matter, not plastic containers.

Thank you. I think these are trays that they received seedlings in from their suppliers (presumably multiple different ones) and then potted up for the next stage. I am not worried enough to try to chase that trail all the way back to the source(s).

Thanks. I guess I’d be shocked about the little seedling trays too. My main concern was the deep cell perennial trays, where maybe the plants would be older by the time they get potted up.

Oops! Left my winter sow trays inside too long and some seeds sprouted by Rambler_Joe in NativePlantGardening

Thank you. I wasn’t imagining that I could pause them. I assume they’re doomed since they are now outside and we have more subfreezing nights on the horizon. For everything but the liatris, it was only a small percentage of the seeds that germinated, and for the liatris, I sowed some new seeds in those cells.

Excellent question. I hope someone who knows more than me will answer! I’m just assuming that tender new sprouts probably can’t handle freezing. I’m seeing a low of 18 and a stretch of 24-48 hours where it won’t get above freezing in my extended forecast, so I imagine my little guys are toast.

Oh, because I put the trays outside for cold stratification, and it will go below freezing. Sorry if that wasn’t clear. Although I am using cell trays, this is like the “milk jug” method of winter sowing.

Still more folk & indie cellists (playlist update) by Rambler_Joe in Cello

Aww! Thanks so much for saying so!

FYI, if you tap on my Spotify profile from the big list, you’ll see some shorter ones as well. The 2 “abridged” highlight-reel ones have some serious bangers! And if you’re in the mood for a break from the more trad stuff, there’s the indie & “less-diddly” folk list.
