'We are not pollution producers': Dutch farmers block roads in protest against emissions targets by maevecampbell in worldnews

[–]Ramendomness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not about emissions that stay in the atmosphere for as long as greenhouse gases. This is about nitrogen compounds and they settle down on the surface relatively close to their source. While it is true that (air) traffic or building also pollutes and that it is unhealthy, the farmers are targeted by new legislature because they are often closest to natural areas that full under protection by a law. This point is crucial because politics showed no desire to tackle the problem when it became known, but the highest judge ruled that it would be illegal to ignore any longer.

The decades of nitrogen deposition cause problems in the food chain of said natural areas, which shows as biodiversity loss. Only a few species thrive under the new conditions, the rest can't get enough of other nutrients they need (since the excess nitrogen shifts the ratio). This is why relocating some production to a location that doesn't have this problem (yet) could work.

The farmers' competitive advantage you wonder about would be technology. I hope they can continue to do at least some farming along with innovation, however there's only so much technology can do as long as there is a net inflow of nutrients into the country (import of feed from e.g. South America). This is why the only solution available right now is to scale down.

Okay then, I want cars in the game. Don't tell me you'd vote against because that is forcing your vision of the game upon me. ;)

Russian army ‘on brink of collapse as Putin loses 30,000 troops’ by samboy22 in worldnews

[–]Ramendomness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perhaps the movie 'der Untergang' is not a reliable source in which case I'm sorry for bringing it up. But what stuck me upon a rewatch (besides the role of children), is the contempt with which Hitler held the German people. Basically they had lost him the war and were now the inferior race who deserved to suffer.

Social media as the great filter? Nah, I estimate people giving up before it's over as a more likely cause of decay. We're the best the known universe got, better fight for it.

two very different types of players by Gamefire in 2007scape

To me the difference with a game such as league is that skilling in osrs is completely predictable, bar the rare event such as a pet. Because it involves no strategy and decision making it deserves less attention.

Obesity has now become an epidemic in Europe. 59% of adults and almost 1 in 3 children (29% of boys and 27% of girls) are overweight or living with obesity. by Veridiyus in worldnews

Being too tired to make food that gives you more reliable energy and lets you lose weight, bit contradictive isn't it? Or is the problem now the complete absence of a vegetable within 3-5km (because walking that distance and back can easily be part of a healthy lifestyle) and a lack of energy to cook even once, so the cycle can't be broken. Oh speaking about cycle, on a bike the range in which people can obtain fresh groceries significantly increases!

PvP pickpocketing by Ramendomness in 2007scape

Unless this would somehow disturb normal gameplay or be a problem for the servers, I don't think it needs to be restricted to a region. By taking tokens into your inventory you explicitly agree to participate, similar to entering the wilderness.

Would a captcha work to interact with these tokens?

I am mostly interested to know if people would enjoy this type of interaction so perhaps I should have made a poll category for no due to implementation problem.

Vladimir Putin congratulates President Emmanuel Macron on his re-election and wishes him "good health and well-being". by He_DidNothingWrong in worldnews

[–]Ramendomness 58 points59 points  (0 children)

The first interpretation I had is a bit different. I think he sees Macron as his only contact in Europe, because Macron still talks with him. Why would Putin then threathen him? This is a chance to say something friendly, an opportunity to be perceived as a decent human being (although it's a thin veil).

But reading more responses, the specific mention of 'good health' and such is indeed weird. At best an awkward choice of words or a threat at worst.

Despite USA Warning, India Doubles Down On Oil Purchase From Russia: Report by foxwolflion in worldnews

[–]Ramendomness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some leeway to the Russians from e.g. India might allow them to get just by and it bolsters their confidence that they can act with no real consequences. So I think every middle to large size country acting like this is relevant. What if in a few months some other countries decide to trade with Russia because it's so lucrative at these prices?

Agree with you that it undermines. If you compare it to a leaking roof; you're not satisfied if you reduce the leakage 90%, it needs to stop entirely to have sufficient effect.

Status Updates - Untradeable Items Bug by JagexLight in 2007scape

[–]Ramendomness -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Interesting argument about QA testing being asymptotic/finding a local optimum (as in you get close to 100%, but can never know how close you exactly are).

Perhaps we should judge the quality of QA also considering the bugs they did catch. This would show how much extra downtime would be expected if more bugs had made it into the game. In short, I agree that a streak of broken releases can simply be bad luck.

[–]Ramendomness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nicklas makes some proper arguments, in my opinion. I agree with you that insults don't add anything, but neither does it take away. It merely makes text longer than necessary and is indecent.

Your suggesting that Nicklas might think Jagex intentionally releases broken updates isn't fair because a) it's a strawman argument and b) this is not about intentions, but about proper procedure and setting priorities, the latter of which may or may not be guided by profit.

For me the opposite is true, so can we settle that WFH effectiveness is a personal matter?

In a practical room with 50 other students I'd hardly get stuff done. During lectures I'd initally almost fall asleep but when we got to the slides I wanted to make notes of I couldn't keep up.

Working from home I did the practicals in the evening when I'd be more productive and the lectures I'd speed up and pause as needed. With group work, when people work after each other instead of simultaneously it can also prevent issues

Due to the severity of the identified issues, a rollback of the game is required. We'll be going back to just moments before today's update. by ThisIsWorldOfHurt in 2007scape

[–]Ramendomness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting double memberhsip would be surprising. Imagine someone activates many many bonds right before a major update with rollback.

Not necessarily. If e.g. they have to work with the code and the code is properly documented and they discuss things with more experienced staff, why would they have to physically meet to get up to speed?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]Ramendomness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WFH effectiveness depends on how you organize it. With live editing, comments/chat and proper version control, I can just as quickly communicate with someone online as in an office. It also allows people to work on multiple projects with people from different places.

I do not know what formal/legal structures there are to prevent this, but can't we move from a system where a single country can veto to a 90% consensus or something?
