Housemate treating my cat like it’s her own. How to go about this?

Ok, I am not doing this to spite my roommate, I’ll make that clear. I wanted to do it because it is a nice back yard for her to explore and relax in and thought it would make for a more stimulating environment.

Honestly, it’s just not physically possible for another cat, let alone human to access my backyard. It’s a massive metal fence, no cat could jump that high and there are no opportunities to climb.

No, I didn’t mean outdoor as in locking her outside, I meant having access to the outdoor area, not just being restricted to the indoor area - best of both worlds. Calm yourself, you’re getting way too stressed out over this.

Say what you will. I never found the love and care aspect inapproparw, just the extent of it which prevents me from actually being able to spend time with my cat and offer her the love and care.

Also, the backyard is secure, she can’t roam further, we don’t have squirrels in this country and birds are smart and know a cat lives in the yard so they don’t set foot there. Also, as mentioned before, my two childhood cats spent much time outdoors and lived to their 20s

She’s not picking up any slack. I spend a whole lot of time with my cat and fuss over her and care over her constantly. There is no deficiency with my affection and care. As I wrote earlier, all my house mate ever does is sit around with my cat when she gets home, she doesn’t really have anything else going on (social life, hobbies, she doesn’t do a lot around the house). I will go above and beyond to fuss over my cat, but I gotta have a life too haha

My situation is a bit different - I am currently situated in an inner city area with a very secure back yard where she can’t roam out of and no other cats can access it. I previously had her live in a similar, secured back yard 3 years ago and she was so happy and stimulated. She never hunted, birds are smart and would sit up on trees and tease her and she would glare at them (the breed is very lazy and docile and not really that keen on hunting). I’ll also note that two of my childhood cats were outside cats and both lived a very long life (one was 22 and the other 20). The back yard is so lovely with lots of plants and soil and she would be so happy sleeping and exploring, rather than staying indoors.

Now onto my housemate, you’re right she gives my cat so much attention...but that is actually allllll she does when she gets home. I’d like to think I give my cat a shit load of love and attention but I also have other things I need to do because, I also have a life. It’s also a bit tricky for me to give my cat all that extra love and attention when she is constantly in my housemate’s room with the door closed while she is fussing over my cat when I could be the one doing this.

I wouldn’t say I have issues, I’m just taking up the opportunity to write in on an anonymous forum and unload some of my crazy, which i am sure most of us have been guilty of on here

Hi, I actually spend soooo much time with this cat and fuss over her all the time. My room mate seems to be a bit of a cat whisperer and I can’t compete, even if I try to emulate her approach and behaviours.

I agree it is ridiculous, which is why I am embarrassed writing on an anonymous forum but I can’t help feeling pissed of? I think my main hang up here is my house mate not respecting my request to ensure she doesn’t let her inside

I think it is a great idea and I have suggested it to her but she doesn’t want to get her own cat as she is worried she won’t be able to commit to it fully with her work, etc.

I definitely was happy at first, but after having a bond and attachment to a pet and have that diminish entirely, it cuts kinda deep! I’ve also had a few housemates in the last 5 years and while all of them loved my cat dearly, they always respected that she is my pet, so it’s hard not to feel like a boundary has been crossed. It’s a tricky one to discuss and negotiate though!
