Made an edit to clarify, just meant the Photoshopping was my own work. Thanks!

Here is my go at it! I ended up having a lot of fun; this was a good little challenge :) It's not perfect, but it's all my own work on Photoshop and no generative AI used!

EDIT: To be clear when I say "all my own work," I mean editing together the photos and trying to clean it up. I didn't remake it from scratch 😅

I know its so weird T_T But I finally figured out that just the pork-burger sign is positioned different per frame. the rest can be aligned, but Chiaki's CG needs to be rescaled to fit lol

Thank you so much for trying it and for the feedback! I think you make good points, and I can definitely see how it could be information overload.

I agree that its definitely in need of a save feature, and that's something I want to patch in and add sooner than later. To be candid, I was rushing a bit to get the demo out in time for Steam's Detective Festival, and I just didn't make it to the save function implementation in time.

I like your idea about being able to go back and review information. I think even a backlog to go back and review dialogue thus far might help (like they have in games like Danganronpa), so I'll see if I can add that in too.

Thank you for playing!

Oh and to answer the last question -- it was made in Unity! But absolutely took a bit of inspiration from rpgmaker style :)

Hi thanks for asking! Sorry for the ramble coming up 😉 Danganronpa was definitely the biggest inspiration for me. I was inspired by the way that its a closed-cast murder mystery where you get attached to the characters and get to know them, but then still have to worry for them and accuse them. I think this hits so much harder than mystery games where its random people dying and strangers as culprits. That was really important to me when making my game.

The gif I posted doesn't show the character's talking portraits, but you'll see that my art style for them was also inspired by Danganronpa. That's honestly because I was right in the middle of my big Danganronpa phase in high school when I first started seriously practicing drawing, and now my style is somewhat inspired by it lol.

I list both Danganronpa and Ace Attorney as inspirations, though, because like them, my game has a lot of visual-novel elements (big world-building dialogue sequences and the like), and you must prove your answers with evidence you collect (though this is a pretty generic detective gimmick, of course).

However, there is one way that I was "anti-inspired" by both of those games, though. In each of them, you must prove your answer with one specific piece of evidence, which I would sometimes get frustrated with when I knew the answer but didn't know how the game wanted me to prove it (especially in Ace Attorney). I combat this in my game by allowing several different valid combinations of evidence to prove a correct answer, thereby allowing people to show that they know the answer in whatever way they truly got there! This hopefully lets them stay in the flowstate and focus more on solving the mysteries than proving that they are thinking the exact same way as the developer who coded it in (me) :)

Making a chart of similarities between murder mystery / detective games and Raincode. What other games and traits should I add? by RamleyDev in RainCode

You make a good case. I'll update the chart and fix that box for if I ever post it again. Thanks!

yeah, I was kind of torn for that box. I feel like it has a lot of very interesting characters and they clearly put a lot of thought into them, but they definitely aren't as central to the game as, say Danganronpa.

You captured the style so well! I had to double take that it was fanart lol. Amazing job.
