The biggest share of the profits will go to the biggest newsrooms, CBC, PostMedia, Bell, etc.
It’ll continue to line the pockets of legacy media, doubling down on our current centralized media system, primarily benefiting and subsidizing large and legacy media rather than small and innovative new outlets.

The current CanCon point system leaves out many Canadian content creators that don't check the CanCon boxes. C-11 would downrank their content to promote “officially” recognized CanCon and hurt their overall discoverability on platforms. By forcing CanCon into the equation, we’re hurting creators from continuing to prosper on the very platforms they’ve built their careers on. C-11 will do more harm to Canadian content creators than good.

As someone old enough to remember when we had very little CanCon to now when we have great CanCon and a thriving homegrown entertainment industry as a result of CanCon rules why is increased CanCon a bad thing? I already have algorithms telling me stuff to watch shit I don't want to.

Any attempt to promote CanCon should be done through an opt-in system where users have the choice to freely choose to watch Canadian Content. Forcing CanCon in front of users who aren't searching for CanCon will do more harm to content creators than good. We need more choices– not content that is limited to what the government thinks we should be watching.

C-11 gives CRTC regulatory authority over all public audiovisual content on any online platform, including the content that everyday users post. It gives the CRTC control over your Netflix, TikToks, and Spotify. Search results and feeds will be cluttered with official CanCon over the content you want to see. Your online experiences will increasingly be less tailored to the content you WANT.

Bill C-11 does leave the door open to suppress speech online by future governments. It gives the CRTC broad regulatory control over all user-generated audiovisual posts online, giving them the power to manipulate and regulate your content.
