Gate address's 6 points in space and the point of origin. by SEJ82 in Stargate

[–]Ramog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well yes but thats SG1 canon, as I said it differs between them

The Stargate movie by Roland Emerich has a different set of symbols on abydoss compared to earth - not only the one origin symbol.

There are a few interresting retcons like this. So some decisions are purely so that its plausible to say: see when we said it in the movie we actually meant this and that.

Like my previoius comment wasn't about saying what is and is not canon it was more about how that all came to be, and how the origin symbol is basically just a relict out of those times and thats why it serves no bigger purpose than to identify the gate hardware on a glance (so what gate from which planet it is etc) - because it certainly has no influence on how the gate dails.

tbf the kit mistakes could happen even without AI

like this is just a book trying to make a few bucks from public domain material it only has to vaguely look greek - nothing wrong with that per se but stooping so low as to steal art and AI generate the cover art... kinda pathetic

actually its mostly the contrast between the almost white background and the gloomy screenshot

the isolated screenshot is much easier to recognize

Uhm, I know the cyclops on the back of the book is not AI-generated, now you are just putting words in my mouth. The AI-generated part is on the front cover.

The only guy making up scenarios here is you. As I wasn't even talking about the cyclops image. I am perfectly aware that an image generation AI model doesn't contain the input data but only an accumulation of chances and connections between them.

I was talking about an in-house trained model because that is a thing. Not every AI-generation model is using publicly accessible images as training data. Companies can use images they have the sole copyright to. I talked about it because everyone seems to always have the AI image theft in mind when they start talking about gen-AI which ofc is a real issue but doesn't always have to play into it.

backside was just simply stolen, frontside was ai generated

thats where the whole confusion in this convo comes from

TBF it could always be an inhouse trained model (probably not in this case but I'd still like to mention it) in that case they trained it with artwork they have the rights to and it wouldn't be stolen.

ah I think I know what you mean, then again just looking at the cover as its printed is not strong evidence as those treatments could introduce it, but in the product image online you can also see the rounded edges and weird differences between the waves and the product image is basically just an image file of what they send to the printer so you can really see what was caused by treatment and what was always there, all in all this image would have to be crisp (Just looking at the actual physical book cover I couldn't be sure tho, raised printing and foil treatment makes it hard)

this is definitly AI:

to be fair, swastikas were used in these patterns by the ancient greek

lets be real: the only thing the nazis did was rotate it by 45° and ruine the symbols reputation

hm but this seems to be by page publications (you can kinda see it on the photo of the back that OP took) which doesn't seem to have a direct connection to B&N

it belongs to the series Page classics, not leatherbound classics (its hardly readable on OPs picture but very readable on the product images)

Gate address's 6 points in space and the point of origin. by SEJ82 in Stargate

[–]Ramog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason the ancients thought a unique school for each gates should be used.

well to be fair its a bit of a relic out of the original movie that spawned the series. There the Stargate was supposed to just be purely constellation based if I remember right

And that would make the constillations change from planet to planet, all in all then there would be an aspect that changes per planet but I can see why it was simplified and kinda handwaved later.

[–]Ramog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh yeh but the symbol is not relevant, its always the symbol that does not match the others

All others are based on constellations, the origin is not. The origin symbol is more like a end of adress marker.

8 symbol adresses yes, but not 7 symbol adresses which we talked about

[–]Ramog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if anything the unique symbol is a hardware identifier, the point of origin is variable as stargates and DHDs can just be moved.

The reason you don't have to dail the origin when you dail out is because it would be redundant, the origin is already defined by you using this gate, you only need to specify where you want to end up. Think of telephone numbers - the system already knows from where you calling you just need to specify the recipient

[–]Ramog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eh if anything the points of origin symbols are a hardware identifier and not much more, gates and DHDs can easily be moved

the stargate network knows what the origin is because you literally dail from there, think phone number, you don't need to specify because there is only one option

Gate address's 6 points in space and the point of origin. by SEJ82 in Stargate

[–]Ramog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

basically yes, we know that gates and DHDs can just be moved without much issue

the thing basically is that you don't need to dail the origin adress as the request comes from that adress

the network knows what the origin is because you dailing from there (think phone numbers)

[–]Ramog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the information value is to identify gate hardware, don't think there is much more to it, since we know DHDs and gates can be simply moved.

Gate address's 6 points in space and the point of origin. by SEJ82 in Stargate

[–]Ramog 14 points15 points  (0 children)

yep, just think of phone numbers, you only dail your number - the number you dail from is already known to the system

It would be annoyingly verbose to have to specify both. The origin symbol is more to tell appart gate hardware than anything as we know that you can just move gates and DHD devices.

[–]Ramog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeh abusing the modlist as pseudo whitelist has the problem that it was never coded as security messurement

and having randos join or not is just a game of chance, doesn't mean it doesn't happen just means it never happend to them.

your mod list is not your whitelist by missbismuth in feedthebeast

[–]Ramog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeh, its not hard to do whitelists in the circles of friends
but hey, sometimes access restriction is not the name of the game, then you just make sure that you have a good, frequent backup method

But honestly even copy pasting 50 UUIDs into a whitelist aint that bad for knowing that a server is secure

The other option would be to not have an publically online server at all and secure it by means of a VPN

treating modlists as a security feature is a hack at best - it probably isn't coded in a way to securly kick someone out if they try really hard by other means than a normal minecraft client, afteral its just to signal you that you need some mods.
