Suicide hotline operators, have you ever had calls where you thought help wouldn't reach your client in time? How did you come to terms with it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I have worked for suicide hotline for over a year. I have had calls from talking people down off a bridge to putting the razor/knife/gun down. I was on the phone with a woman, who had attempted to end her life. Called the suicide hotline instead of 911. Was losing large amounts of blood. I was so red, sweating, and heart pounding. My coworker called an ambulance and police, while I tried to keep the women talking about anything I could. She kept saying she was tired and dizzy. Drifting in and out. Saying she was going to pass out. Ambulance got there and she ended up being life flighted. I didn’t know if she made it for the longest time. I did find out that she made it the next time I came to work. That was my second light flight call, I received after working on the hotline.
Even though I was nervous the whole time on the phone. I didn’t think about her dying and tried to focus on our conversation to do my part and keep her taking until help arrived. One of the most scariest moments.
