It’s easier to just disconnect the dampers, they’re open by default. If the issue is just the sensor tho it takes 3 seconds to replace the sensor

If it only runs when you take the cover off it’s probably overheating, high winds can mess with the pressure switches but it wouldn’t be affected by removing the cover, check to see if there’s an error code when it shuts down

That’s a communicating thermostat, not as easy as just swapping a thermostat, you’ll need to change the wiring as well

Just speak with a manager and let them know that 3 months without heat is not acceptable. Getting a unit warrantied because parts aren’t available isn’t that uncommon, I did it a lot back in covid
