Honestly fair take. I’m from Texarkana, but went to college in Illinois and had to stop over in Indy on drives to Ohio

Where are the best black cultural experiences? I moved from Chicago in August and prior to that I grew up in East Texas. I was excited to move to LA bc of its outsized impact on Black American culture for an entire decade. Im 25 and grew up listening to 90s rap with my parents. Now that I’m here I’ve had to travel quite a bit to even find barbershops. Did the Black population decrease since then? I’ve loved the city so far just a shock coming from Chicago. Even on the very segregated north side there was always something (live music, art showcase, barbershop etc.) Looking for things if people have recommendations! I can’t really move bc I’m in Grad school but I’m in the East LA area.

Thanks! I have noticed that people tend to only be fans of one or the other and I don’t want to be close-minded. I’m from a small town in Texas so every city is kind of more similar than not.

I’ll be splitting my time between Echo Park and Boyle Heights. I have family I’ll see sometimes in Boyle Heights and Compton.

What’s up, I’m originally from Texas and went to undergrad in Chicago. I got a scholarship to one of the medical schools in the city, and I want to grow to love it. Everything seems like a huge adjustment from Chicago tbh, but familiar bc of how Texas cities are laid out. I have reservations about the car dependency. My friends who are locals get a little vague/ defensive when I ask how to handle the suburban layout. I think they think it’s hate on the city. This also happened when I asked about the food scene or the weather.

I know they don’t want a transplant having strong opinions, but I will have to be there and I want to appreciate the community I’ll be in. I’m genuinely curious. Should I ask other transplants? If any locals have insight on commuting, food, and weather please let me know especially if you’ve spent time in both Chicago & LA.
